How to succeed even if you're not the best, part 4

from Finding the Funny: Leadership Tips From a Comedian

I got one of the nicest compliments from Mark Ridley who owns the Comedy Castle comedy club in Royal Oak, Michigan. He said he appreciated that I was professional, I showed up on time, I did the time I said I'd do on stage and that I didn't drink up all the free beer at the bar.   This week we're talking tips to get ahead, even if you aren't the most talented in your field.  And my tip today is to watch what you do behind the scenes. I didn't figure I'd be Jay Leno, but I still wanted a great career in comedy, and I realized that what I did behind the scenes, was just as important as what I did on stage. I had to be funny, but I was also easy to work with, and followed the comedy club rules.  I figured if it came down to me or another comic, and we were both funny, then they'd pick me because I wasn't going to cause them any extra hassles. Being easy to work with has helped me a ton in my career, so make sure you don't make crazy demands on the people who have to deal with you.    ACTION: What you do behind the scenes matters a LOT. If you want a peak behind the scenes of my comedy career, check out my book on Amazon – "Convention Comedian: Stories and Wisdom From Two Decades of Chicken Dinners and Comedy Clubs"   That's it for today. Take care and enjoy your journey.
