I am the bilingual academic and career resource advisor of the Center for Success at St. Xavier University. I would like to welcome you to our Career Talk podcast series. Today, we will be talking about the steps to creating a cover letter.
Cover letters are an excellent way to adapt to an application while also demonstrating your written communication skills. Cover letters also show a bit of personality and values in the writing style, word selection, and topics that you choose to discuss. In a cover letter, you will talk about your strongest qualifications and accomplishments. You might also want to talk about how you became interested in this field.
A cover letter is made up of three to five paragraphs. In your opening paragraph, always state the name of the position, organization, and where you found the job, whether that was on their website, LinkedIn, or a professor. If you happen to have a connection, you should name it in this paragraph. For example, if your professor referred you, you can say, my professor, Dr.
Lilly Rodriguez, sent me this opening and encouraged me to apply. In the second paragraph, you will outline your strongest qualifications in more detail and show how they match the position requirements. In this paragraph, you will also include evidence of related work, extracurricular, and academic experiences, if applicable. In the next paragraph, you will try to convince the employer by connecting your skills, characteristics, and qualifications to the position and company as a whole.
So, you are going to tell them how your skills connect or apply to their company. You can also highlight what interests you in working with this particular organization. Was it a childhood experience? Was it a special interaction?
Or was it someone who inspired you? Lastly, you will need to reaffirm your qualifications and interests in the position. Be sure to include your contact information and the letter formally. You can say anything along the lines of sincerely, best regards, or thank you for your consideration.
And remember to always proofread your letters before submitting them. Alright, this brings us to the end of this episode. Thank you for listening. For more information, visit the Center for Success at sxu.edu.
