Histon officer, but the human, a small mechanic named Mara, simply blinked up from her bowl, smiled, and said the sentence that would later become a sector-wide legend. He paused, almost reverent, and, fearless, Mara shrugged, wiping a smudge of chocolate from one cub's cheek. The cafeteria inhaled sharply, because in Veren culture, declaring someone essential to your cubs was equivalent to naming them pack, family, protected, untouchable, Mara froze.
