Hour 2: AUTHOR JONATHAN BERNSTEIN (Portland, OR) is a Writer/Political Satirist and Author of 2 books (“Election Day” and “Two Goats” with Illustrator Natalia Berezina). Bernstein wants to make a positive impact through the power of visual storytelling. Born in NYC, he grew up in San Francisco and now lives in Portland, Oregon with his “modern family”. His latest book, “Election Day”, is like a Where’s Waldo board book with 15 everyday characters from both sides of the political aisle. Using detailed double-page spread illustrations, it shows what each character is doing on election day (and most are not voting). Bernstein created this timely book for 3 reasons: 1. as a reminder to make a plan to vote, 2. to encourage a dialogue among friends and family, and 3. to give people some comic relief from election information overload. His book uses exaggerated humor, similar to what fans love in the Doonesbury comic strip, MAD Magazine and “The Simpsons”. Bernstein has a PhD from Yale University in Literature. As a life-long student of European languages, he speaks 6 languages (German, French, Russian, English, Spanish & Swedish). He believes visual stories can be understood in “multiple languages”.
