Hunger in Southern Africa

The United Nations sent warning signals in December last year that more than half of Zimbabwe's fourteen million people are under threat by a desperate lack of food. It says the aid it provides could run out by the end of February. The World Food Programme (WFP) has since called on countries to step up support to Zimbabwe, where millions of people are facing hunger brought on by prolonged drought and economic meltdown. Meanwhile in Zambia the devastating effects of an extreme dry spell has withered crops, leaving more than one point seven million people struggling to feed themselves.
