Hungry for History Food Event

Our conversation for Tourism Tuesday - Winchester/Frederick County edition - with Renee Bayliss from Winchester/Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau also included Kristen Laise from Belle Grove Plantation and Rick Kriebel from Newtown History Center. The group gave details for Hungry for History - a food event showcasing fifteen historical sites in the City of Winchester, Clarke & Frederick Counties that will highlight food's role in history. The event will kick off on Saturday, August 26 and run through Monday, September 4, 2023. Museums and historic sites in our community will offer a variety of programs and special events such as presentations, cooking demonstrations, hands-on activities, children's activities, food tastings, special handouts and giveaways, displays of historical recipes, agriculture-related programs, and more. Topics will span our area's history from many eras. She also talked of Kneading in Silence: A Glimpse into the Life of the Enslaved Cook Judah. This 30-minute presentation on Sunday, September 3, at  2:30pm will discuss the life of Judah, the enslaved cook of Belle Grove. Purchased by the Hite's with her two young boys, Judah remained their cook until her death in 1836. This program will take place in the winter kitchen of the Belle Grove Plantation Manor House. Rick explained their program for homeschoolers to look for and discuss changes in food technology, as seen with artifacts in the Steele Bros store exhibit that will happen throughout the event by reservation only.
