Husky Talk- Phil Hunt

A new episode of Husky Talk, coming all the way from North Dakota, former UConn football defensive back Phil Hunt. Husky Talk continues to grow, and we are having outstanding guests each week. Phil shared his journey, along with breaking news at the end of the episode that Husky fans will be thrilled to hear. Phil is from New Jersey and started playing football a little bit later than most kids. He was a dynamic athlete with incredible speed and a state champion running track in the 110 hurdles. Phil made a decision in 8th grade that he wanted to play division 1 college football on a scholarship and put the work in to make that dream come true. He played varsity football in high school during his junior and senior seasons. Going both ways, he was a tailback on offense and an outside linebacker on defense. He started one game at corner because of his speed and showed his athleticism, as well as his versatility. Being recruited by Delaware, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and the military academies, UConn hiring Skip Holtz as head coach was a big factor in his decision to attend UConn. Also, receiving a full scholarship showed his importance to the future of UConn football. Phil had 3 different position coaches in 5 years which makes things difficult having to prove yourself each time a new guy comes in. He was a scholar athlete and part of the 1998 team regarded the best in UConn history winning 10 games, beating the eventual national champions UMass twice and winning the first play-off game ever against Hampton. Phil was voted a captain by his teammates for his dedication, hard work, and leadership. After his playing career was over, he trained for the NFL but went undrafted. Phil focused on his academics earning a master's degree while working in the athletic department. Athletic Director Lew Perkins surrounded himself with attorneys for advice and they talked with Phil about going to law school which he ended up doing after his time at UConn. Working for the NCAA and other jobs including his current position at North Dakota State, Phil is married with young children now. His 7-year-old is a track star and competing currently against the top talent in the country. At the conclusion of our show, Phil reveals a new position he accepted and let's just say he is coming back to the east coast. It was a pleasure talking to Phil and learning his story.
