Hydrocortisone for Severe Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)

from Saving Lives Podcast: Critical Care w/eddyjoemd · host Eddy Joe Gutierrez, MD

Show Notes: https://eddyjoemd.com/hydrocortisone-cap/ In this episode of the podcast, I discuss a new study that found that hydrocortisone can save lives in patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). I discuss the findings and what they mean for the treatment of CAP. In addition I also discuss the risks and benefits of using hydrocortisone, and who should be considered for treatment. CAP is a common and potentially life-threatening infection of the lungs. It is caused by bacteria that are inhaled into the lungs, and it can affect people of all ages. The most common symptoms of CAP are fever, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. In severe cases, CAP can lead to pneumonia, sepsis, and death. The study that we discuss in this episode was a randomized controlled trial that looked at the effect of hydrocortisone on mortality in patients with severe CAP. The study found that patients who received hydrocortisone were less likely to die than those who did not receive hydrocortisone. This finding is significant because it suggests that hydrocortisone may be a life-saving treatment for patients with severe CAP.
