I AM: Gate and Shepherd
from Lindsay Lane East Hosted by Heath Haney
In John 10, we encounter one of Jesus' most intimate and comforting self-descriptions: 'I am the gate' and 'I am the good shepherd.' This teaching reveals something profound about our relationship with God. Jesus isn't describing a distant deity who drives us from behind with threats and fear, but a shepherd who leads from the front, whose voice we learn to recognize through time spent together. The sheep pen represents life with God—not a restrictive enclosure, but a place of safety, provision, and true freedom. What's striking is that Jesus is both the gate and the shepherd, meaning He is both the only entrance into this abundant life and the one who guides us through it. For those of us who feel like we're just outside the pen—attending church, singing the songs, reading the Word, but never truly entering—this passage issues a clear invitation. Repentance and belief in Jesus are the threshold we must cross. Once inside, we discover that all the things we feared giving up pale in comparison to what we gain. The abundant life Jesus promises isn't about material wealth or earthly success, but about being known intimately by the Creator, protected in His care, and led by His voice through every season. The question we must honestly ask ourselves: Are we truly in the pen, or are we just walking alongside the fence?
