Who are you when nothing is required and no one is watching?The culture's answer is build yourself. Define yourself. Become whoever you choose to be. Which sounds like freedom — until the self you constructed keeps shifting, the identity that felt authentic at 22 feels like a costume at 32, and there is no foundation underneath any of it. Before the performance, before the achievement, before anything you built — there is a self that God made. And that self is not a problem to be solved. Genesis 1 — God created man in his own image. The Hebrew word is tselem — the image a king would place in a territory to represent his authority there. Every human being carries that image before they have done anything to earn or lose it. And 1 John 3 — behold how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God. And so we are. Not you might be, if you sort yourself out. And so we are.The identity question in the biblical frame is not primarily who am I. It is whose am I.
