I Have Never Seen a Strong Man at a MAGA Rally

from The Lucas Bean Show · host Lucas Bean

I have never seen a strong man at a MAGA rally. Have you? They are beta males claiming to be alpha males. They lose their minds and have an emotional breakdown if you prove them wrong. They hate facts because facts make them feel stupid. There is a psychological reason for that.Sociologist Robb Willer at Stanford University ran a series of experiments on what happens when men feel insecure about their own masculinity. He randomly gave men feedback suggesting they were either masculine or feminine. Women who received masculine feedback showed no change in behavior at all. But men who received feminine feedback immediately changed. They became more aggressive. More hostile. More homophobic. More supportive of war. They reported feeling more ashamed, more guilty, and more upset at everything. And they immediately overcompensated with extreme displays of dominance and toughness. Not because they were strong. Because they were scared.Willer published his findings in the American Journal of Sociology in 2013 under the title “Overdoing Gender.” He called the pattern masculine overcompensation. The weaker a man feels on the inside, the louder he performs on the outside. He ran four studies confirming this. In one, men whose masculinity was threatened reported greater support for dominance hierarchies and a stronger desire to climb them. In another, a large-scale survey found that men who believed social changes threatened the status of men also reported more homophobic attitudes, more support for war, and a greater belief in male superiority. In a fourth study, men with higher testosterone showed even stronger reactions to masculinity threats than men with lower testosterone. The insecurity did not discriminate. It scaled with biology. The pattern was the same every single time. Threaten a man’s sense of masculinity and he does not get stronger. He performs strength. There is a difference.Other researchers found the same thing from a different direction. Psychologists Joseph Vandello and Jennifer Bosson at the University of South Florida ran five studies showing that manhood, unlike womanhood, is seen as a precarious social status. It is not something you are born with and keep. It has to be constantly earned and publicly proven. It can be lost at any moment. And when it is threatened, men do not reflect. They do not pause. They get aggressive. In one of Vandello and Bosson’s experiments, men whose masculinity was threatened punched a pad with significantly more force than men who were not threatened. In another, simply threatening a man’s sense of manhood was enough to activate physically aggressive thoughts. The aggression was not a sign of strength. It was a coping mechanism for anxiety. These men were not punching because they were tough. They were punching because they were terrified.Vandello and Bosson published this research in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. They called it precarious manhood. The belief that your masculinity can be taken from you at any moment and has to be constantly defended through action. Now think about that research and look at a MAGA rally.Loud trucks. Loud flags. Loud opinions. Fragile men. These are men who wrap themselves in symbols of toughness because the feeling of toughness does not come from the inside. The truck is a prop. The flag is a prop. The attitude is a prop. Remove the performance and what is left is a man who is afraid. Afraid of being seen as weak. Afraid of being wrong. Afraid of being less than. And the research tells us exactly what that fear produces. Aggression. Hostility. Homophobia. Support for dominance hierarchies. Every single behavior you see on display at a Trump rally was predicted by these studies years before Trump ever ran for office. They do not follow Trump because they are strong. They follow Trump because they are terrified that someone will find out they are weak. Trump performs dominance every time he opens his mouth. He insults people. He threatens people. He never admits he is wrong. That is not leadership. That is masculine overcompensation on a national stage. And millions of insecure men watch it and feel relief. Because if the most powerful man in the country acts that way, then maybe they are not the weak ones. Maybe they are the strong ones after all. That is the lie they need to believe. The research does not support it. The men who scream the loudest about being alphas are the ones who scored the highest on insecurity in every single study Willer ran. The men who perform the most aggression are the ones who feel the most threatened in every experiment Vandello and Bosson conducted. The men who need to tell you they are tough are the ones who are most afraid you will find out they are not.Conservative masculinity is not strength. It is a performance of strength by men who have none. And every MAGA rally is the stage. The next time you see a man in a lifted truck with a Trump flag screaming about how the left is full of snowflakes, remember what the research actually says. That man is not performing strength. He is performing fear. And the louder he gets, the more afraid he is.Psychology has been documenting this for over a decade. The weakest men in the room are always the loudest. And right now they are running the country.SourcesWiller, R., Rogalin, C., Conlon, B., & Wojnowicz, M. T. (2013).
