I Thought I Was the Healthy One

from Humanly IS Possible · host Shaya Hecht

Many people come to therapy because they know something is wrong. Devorah's story was different. She was successful, capable, independent, and by all appearances doing well. She thought of herself as the strong one — the person who didn't need anyone. Therapy wasn't something she felt she needed. If anything, she was simply curious about it. After the birth of her second child, she attended therapy for the first time. It was helpful, practical, and focused on navigating a difficult season of life. When things improved, therapy ended and she moved on.  A few years later, new struggles emerged. This time, she felt something deeper was happening. She entered therapy expecting to gain insight and find solutions. Instead, she found herself questioning long-held beliefs about independence, vulnerability, attachment, and what it means to need other people. In this conversation, we discuss: what happens when independence becomes part of your identity discovering needs you never knew you had attachment, vulnerability, and shame why therapy can feel so threatening the experience of becoming attached to a therapist repair, trust, and therapeutic relationships how therapy can change the way we relate to ourselves, others, and even to Hashem This is a conversation about healing, attachment, and the courage it takes to question a story you've believed about yourself for a very long time.
