I live in the Kituwa Bioregion near Asheville, NC, USA, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Transcript to the Episode Hey, folks. It’s David Bourne. And I’m walking outside. Because I hear a bird. (Sorry, that may have been too loud.) I hear a bird that I want you to hear. I’m hoping I can get it. Did you hear that? [A faint bird call is heard.] It went who-ooo-ooo-ooo. So, my story about that sound is that I used to think that was an owl because it, you know, sounds like an owl, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not an owl. Some of you may know what it is. It’s very common. The bird’s cousin is one of the most common birds we see downtown in big cities. They’re dark. A lot of people think they’re dirty. Because they live downtown. Oh, there it goes. I scared it off. Another cool sound that it made whenever it flew off. It was kind of a twittering that its wings make, I guess? I don’t know if it’s the wings. Or maybe it’s coming out of its vocal cords. But I’m pretty sure it’s just wings. It’s a cousin to that big downtown bird. Which is a rock dove also known as…Do you know it? A pigeon. Cousin to the rock dove, the bird that we just heard that said, who-ooo-ooo-ooo. It is a mourning dove, m-o-u-r-n-i-n-g. And I used to think it was an owl. And I would get so excited because ” There is an owl in the yard! I just can’t see it.” Well, it was a very, very common not so exciting mourning dove. So I hope you could hear that. And I’m going to play this back and see if you can. Hopefully, this isn’t too loud. I’m trying a new technique. I’ll take a picture of it. Nice, I’ll try to get my iPad to do it or something. I’m using my iPhone attached to a recorder that’s called a zoom h1 handy recorder. It’s like 100 bucks. And I just love it. It’s a stereo recorder with a decent mic, adjustable volume, and better than a phone. And it’ll do all kinds of stuff. But one thing that I recently learned is that you can plug it in through a USB adapter to your phone. So this way, I can shoot this file directly to my audio processing service (Auphonic). And that’ll send it hopefully automatically. We’ll see if I set it up, right. That’ll send it to my podcast server. So we’re going to try that. So hopefully that’ll work. That’s why I’m doing this Daily Show. Short, quick audio programs so that I can learn. It gets me outside gets me thinking and talking about nature, which is a subject I dearly, dearly love and it gets me using the technology that I also dearly, dearly love, so I hope you’re enjoying this.
