How Crows are Like People – DavoShow033

How Crows are Like People – DavoShow033 I don’t like crows. And it’s teaching me about something I don’t like about myself. I really dislike crows. Which is a bit weird because I admire them for their smarts. Crows and their cousins the ravens are some of the most intelligent birds, as some remarkable studies have shown. I admire their intelligence. But I really don’t like crows. Crows are mean. They gang up on my favorite birds (the raptors and owls), they hunt in packs, they fuss a lot. Their animal grouping name is called a “murder” for good reason. And the word “murder” points to the things I despise. You see, crows remind me of people I don’t like. And This is How Crows Are My Teachers As I say in the podcast… “It’s not the crows that I don’t like, it’s parts of humanity, which, of course, is really a reflection on parts of myself.” We project ourselves on everything. This is a function of being human. It’s how we move through the world. Projection is a safety shortcut of our Mind self and Body self that says, “this is good and safe”. Or, “this is bad and hurtful”. When I see crows it reminds me that I have mean parts inside me, too. And that makes me angry, and regretful. This is painful to feel, but the awareness this projection provides me can be good. Let’s Welcome Our Teachers However They Come So when I hear a crow and see them three of them dive bombing a redtail hawk in the sky over my house, I can remember… ”ARRGG…I hate those f^ck!ng birds!!! and… “AHHH, I see you. And I see what I’m doing here”. This awareness is a connection that at first feels hot and painful. But to know that I’m trying to heal a part of myself, then AHHH, yes. That’s a good thing. All healing begins with recognition. From there we get the chance to stay stuck or move forward. So come on over, crows. You are welcome at my house, anytime. Are you ready to move forward and start making real changes in your life? Learn how coaching can give you shortcuts and inspiration at DavidBourne.com/Discovery. It is an overcast morning, and a pretty large flock of crows just flew over, in the process of flying over. Of course, there is a jet, you might hear the wind in the trees. And I just wanted to talk about these crows because I don’t, like crows in general. And I think that’s interesting because I really love birds. Reflections on Humanity and Dislike for Crows [~0:59~] And you know honestly it’s not nothing against the crows themselves. I’ve I’ve recognized that it’s really a reflection on maybe what I don’t like about humanity, that crows seem to bring up in me. The Troublesome Nature of Crows and Humanity [~1:21~] They travel in packs, they fuss a lot, they bother other species like hawks or really, anything that seems to be getting in their way, and that’s a lot like what, people do. They just don’t seem very peaceful, and all too often people are not peaceful. But I try to remember it’s not the crows that I don’t like, it’s parts of humanity, which, of course, is really a reflection on parts of myself. Because I’m human and I’ve got those parts in me, those parts that like to fuss, that like to make a ruckus, that are seeking people who have similar opinions of me, who are also fussing about things that we don’t like, and we get together and say, “yeah, that sucks”, or “we should do something about that”. Reflections on Fussing and Seeking Like-minded Individuals [~2:31~] Caw, Caw, Caw. [~2:33~] Well, the crows, being crows, did not cooperate. They did not get on my recording, but that’s okay, because it’s given me a chance to reflect on humanity and reflect on how all too often when we see something we don’t like. [~2:52~] It’s that old finger pointing. When you point your finger, you’ve got three fingers pointing back at you. Go ahead, point your finger and you’ll see that. Reflecting on Personal Growth and Self-Improvement [~3:05~] That reflection that, oh yeah, I don’t like that because there’s a part of me that I don’t like. And that’s an opportunity to do something about it. What? Well, you hopefully recognized, that when you’re fussing at something else or something or someone triggers you, ask yourself why that makes you mad and stop blaming it on them and start asking yourself, Okay. Do I want to feel this way? Choosing to Let Go of Anger and Negativity [~3:36~] Why do I want to feel this way? How’s it serving me? And is that how I want to, do I really want to be pissed off all the time? I don’t. That has never served me to be angry or to be pissed off for very long. Sure. Short term, I get it. But longterm, you’re just, you’re just wallowing in the, in the stew of it for some reason. The Love-Hate Relationship with Crows So anyway, that’s just a little bit on crows and maybe they’ll come back because as much as I don’t like them, I do love a nice crow visit. [~4:22~] Hope you’re having a good day out there. Cheers. <!-- HIDDEN START [How Crows are Like People Plus Automation by Auphonic – DavoShow033](https://davidbourne.com/how-crows-are-like-people-plus-automation-by-auphonic-davoshow033/) CHANGED to [How Crows are Like People – DavoShow033](https://davidbourne.com/how-crows-are-like-people-davoshow033/) TITLE:: START DATE:: 2023-08-04 Fri PUBLISHED DATE:: 2023-08-04 Fri PROMOTED:: 2023-08-16 Wed Substack, [How Hating Crows Helps Me Like Myself - DavoShow033](https://davidbourne.substack.com/p/how-hating-crows-helps-me-like-myself) PROOFED:: ddate SITELINK: [How Crows are Like People – DavoShow033](https://davidbourne.com/how-crows-are-like-people-davoshow033/) MP3LINK:: CATEGORY:: KEYWORDS:: anger, audio, crow, nature, podcast, podcasting,The Davo Show SUMMARY:: ### 2DO: - Task1 - Task2 ### CHECKLIST _x_ Title _x_ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, _x_ [powerpress] in place _x_ Image correct __ Has internal links _x_ Links Checked _x_ CTA _x_ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked _x_ Post link to master link file. This episode is about thoughts, sounds, consciousness and how these things influence our ability to choose. Show Notes from DavoShow032 Viktor Frankl wrote about in Man’s Search for Meaning that Nazi concentration camps were much harder for some folks than others. I briefly mention what my tinnitus hearing problem has taught me about my perception of reality. (More on that later.) What Is The Davo Show? You’re listening to an airplane, a water feature, cars on the parkway, dogs panting heavily. Well, maybe not so heavily now. Are you going to pant? (talking to dogs…) Huh? There we go. (Panting…) And a new sound which I’m sure will come up during this course, short conversation. A barking neighbor’s dog. That’s a brand new sound because the neighbors just moved in today. We heard a lot of barking today, which is good. It’s a challenge, because I like the quiet. In fact, I usually turn off the water fountain. Some other sounds are harder to turn off. But that gets me to my topic, the brain and what we hear. [1:30] For example, I have a constant ringing in my ear that you can’t hear. Look at you’re glad about that. It’s called tinnitus, and it never completely goes away, but you know what? 99% of my day I don’t notice it, which I am so grateful for that. It really doesn’t exist in the real world. Except of course, it exists in my brain. And And thankfully, my attitude towards it is pretty. I don’t know, easy, we’ll say, because I just ignore it. [2:08] I don’t think about it. It’s only when I think about it that I hear it, which is a lesson in consciousness. What is consciousness? [2:24] Well, it’s our ability to see, although it’s not really seeing, but it’s our ability to see ourselves think. It’s our ability to notice ourselves noticing. So that’s a good thing to realize that you have because it can be really helpful if you are experiencing something difficult like tinnitus. I know for some people is extremely difficult. Having a jet flyover during your podcast episode could be extremely difficult for some. But I’m choosing consciously with my, consciousness, not to let it bother me because I know you can probably still hear my voice and you can hear the jet and maybe you’ll hear the dog barking soon. Hopefully you’re seeing my point. We have these things that happen in our lives that we may not like, but so often that not liking is a, perception that we can have a choice about. Now, not always. I know that’s… I, can’t flatly, blankly, totally, always say that. Some things are just gonna be tough no matter what [3:48] But, other things, particularly thoughts, those are something we have a choice about, which reminds me…. Every time I think of this, I think about Viktor Frankl and his amazing experience that he wrote about in a book. [4:14] That I’m blanking on the name. This is not scripted, folks, as you might tell. I’ll think think of it in a second, it’s Man’s Search for Meaning. See, there it was. In Man’s Search for Meaning, he journals his experience, (not journals, but writes) about his experience of being in one of the worst situations that we can imagine, which is a Nazi Holocaust camp where he has lost most of his family, including his wife. He doesn’t know where she is. He believes she’s probably been killed like so many people he knows and loved. But, as an observer of life, a scientist, an early psychologist, he was able to come out of that experience observing that some people did better than others. The ones that tended to do better were able to make a choice and see that they have a choice as how they perceive, situation and that’s everything. How we perceive, how we choose, how we just choose to experience the world. You do have a choice. If you’re gonna take anything away from this rambling few moments in my backyard with me. [5:44] Know that you have a choice and build on that. Your Choices – A choice to live your life differently. – A choice to accept some of the hard things. – A choice to know that you don’t have to be defined by your difficulties. [6:04] So I will leave you with that choice. And I hope you choose to stay tuned to this channel. [6:12] Be in touch with me if that is something that you feel compelled to do to reach out to engage with some ideas because that’s what I’m trying to do here folks with the Davo show which. [6:24] By the way will be migrating into the David Bourne Show, the David Bourne podcast I’m not sure how that’s going to happen yet but it will somehow once I get back from my trip that I’m gonna be taking this summer. I’m gonna peek into the the hood of how all these things work and figure out how to reboot that podcast and get some of this Davo Show energy into the David Bourne podcast. So, hope you’ll pay attention and hope you’ll reach out and know that you have a choice. Until then, see you out there. Joy Stacking – DavoShow031

Joy Stacking Makes Your Life Better – DavoShow031 I went for a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway the other day and realized I was having a Joy Stacking experience. Show Notes Maximize your experiences by “Joy Stacking” them. My old, new car… a 140k mile, manual, seal gray 996 911 C4S. My favorite drive of all time is the Blue Ridge Parkway. One joy was an indigo bunting an uncommon, beautiful blue bird. What Is The Davo Show? There are birds, and a little rustling in the in the leaves from the, the wind blowing. It reminded me of the other day when I got in my car (my favorite car It’s a 911. I got in it. I bought it last year. I love it. It’s been in the shop a good bit. It’s, it’s 21 years old. Needed some work. But I love the thing. So fun to drive.) I got in it. Went around the corner. Got on the parkway, which is that road that so often when I’m recording you hear vehicles on the parkway. I got in it. I went for a few miles. Beautiful day. Got out at an overlook, which are these little parking lots that the parkway has. And you can just pull out and they’ve cleared the trees there. Keep it clear so you can look down into the valley. That was at the overlooking the Walnut Grove. [1:32] Just gorgeous and of course I hear a bird that I thought I’d never heard before. I didn’t really recognize it so I recorded it (that recording sucks because there were lots of motorcycles out that day so I won’t be posting that one but, it was an indigo bunting which is beautiful bluebird I did get to see it but mostly I got to hear it. I couldn’t quite see it, I wasn’t that close. On the drive home, I came up with this concept that I want to share with you, because I think it is worth.Living into it, because it definitely makes life better. [2:11] The concept is called joy stacking. Okay, so think about those things that I did. – I got in a favorite car, – got on my favorite road, the Blue Ridge Parkway, – pulled over, because I knew there’d be a great view, – and sure enough, there was a little slice of nature there, that bird and the bird song, – and then I recorded it. So what was I doing? I was stacking the joys. I realized this on the drive home. I was putting together a bunch of things that I love all in one moment, all in one sequence, and that just amplified the enjoyment of it all. So that’s a technique that we can all do. I’m doing it right now, standing my beautiful backyard and soaking it in, paying attention to how the leaves are moving around through this gentle breeze. And now I’m even noticing there’s some new, some new buds in the magnolia tree that I hadn’t noticed. Very cool. I’m listening to the, to the water fountain. [3:28] I’m hearing the birds and trying to figure out what they are, see if I know their calls are night, see if I know their calls or not. I have Got my dogs out here. I’m making a podcast recording. Stacking the joys, folks. That’s Joy stacking. How are you joy stacking? Are you doing this? Have you been doing this all along? Maybe going out on hikes, not by yourself, sometimes that’s joyful, but go invite your best friends. Go invite some folks you haven’t seen stack the joys bring some awesome snacks your favorite stuff tell them why you love it just some ideas for you out here on this glorious windy sunny spring day go find some joy stacking folks! [0:26] I’m in my backyard. I’m actually on the back porch, which is a screened-in porch in my backyard. I was driving home yesterday and these two woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, which are large birds, bigger than a crow. Crows are pretty big, maybe about the size of a raven, and they’re just funny-looking because when you see them on the ground it looks really odd because they don’t walk, they hop. I did not know this, because I never see them on the ground. I always see them, either on a tree feeding, like on the trunk of a large tree, or I see them flying from tree to tree. And what was weird about it yesterday was that they were, there were two of them, so I’m guessing it was a mating pair. They were hopping around each other and paying no attention to me in the car, you know, 20 feet away. Another car drove up five feet away and they just ignored it, which was just so weird. They were so enraptured, I guess, with each other that They didn’t do their normal fly away immediately thing. [1:52] So I guess that’s kind like people when we get really focused on somebody we can’t see anything else but them. You know pileated woodpeckers are not people but it just reminded me, I’ve been like that before. You just can’t really see anything else except that person right in front of you that’s a good thing to be able to have that experience. I hope that you have had that experience, And I hope these Pileated woodpeckers are able to Keep populating these woods. The Purpose of Listening – DavoShow029

What’s the Purpose of Listening? Ask Kevin Kelly. In his most recent book, Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier, Kelly has a great quote about how and why we should listen. It’s not the conventional idea, as you might have guessed. What’s Your Answer to The Question? Why do you listen? How do you listen? Maybe the best question is this…How do you like to be heard? What Is The Davo Show? And he had a quote in there which was excellent advice about listening. And because I’m a coach and think that coaching is awesome and think that more people need to know about the awesomeness of coaching… I thought I’d share with you this quote and my slight twisting of it in regards to coaching. So here’s the quote, and I’m going by memory. The purpose of listening is not to reply, but to hear what is not being said. I’ll say it again. The purpose of listening is not to reply, but to hear what is not being said. When I heard that, I thought, oh my gosh, that is so cool. And I think it can be expanded a bit for coaching. we’re coaching. [1:34] I found that the main thing is that people know what the solutions to their problems are, they just don’t quite know how to get there. And so the role of the coach is to help them get there by asking questions and by listening for, what’s not being said. But not just listening, but asking questions in a way that helps the client see for themselves, and this is critical for coaching, see for themselves what’s not being said. So to re-phrase that phrase from Kevin Kelly, I’d say the purpose of coaching is not to reply, but to help the client see what’s not being said. [2:41] I’m evolving that definition. I think it’s a good practice to take anything that you do and to define it. So that was a new definition for me when I heard Kevin Kelly make that awesome quote. And I’ll just say that book, which I’ll provide the link in the show notes, the book is amazing. So many good, short pieces of advice and ideas and just excellent, would make a wonderful gift for a graduate. [3:17] It is graduate season right now. And so I’m going to buy a few copies for the graduates of my life. And so, I hope you check it out. This is David Bourne. You can find the show notes at DavidBourne.com. Make Your Life Profoundly Better by Paying More Attention – DavoShow028

My life is so much better because I’m paying better attention to small things. Today, I noticed some large white magnolia flowers in my yard. As I went in closer to hear, smell, and touch the tree, I remembered viscerally how much I loved them in my childhood. What would cause you to deeply connect? What did you love to do as a kid? What would bring back strong, pleasant memories and emotions for you? Are you taking time to do this regularly? Show Notes Yesterday’s Episode on Frederick Buechner’s Listening to Your Life helped me this even more clearly. – The magnificent Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) I’m looking at, smelling, feeling, and remembering from climbing trees in my childhood. What Is The Davo Show? [0:13] That was the sound of a bumblebee (actually, a honey bee ) gathering nectar off of a magnolia bloom in my front yard. The smell takes me back. It’s kind of crazy. how smells work. This magnolia is not that tall. No, it’s maybe 14 or 15 feet tall. It’s not very big around and I am comparing it saying it’s not very big to the one that was in my backyard when I was a kid. I remember climbing it, and going all the way to the top and seeing the entire town and man I didn’t do that very often but that smell it’s funny how you get right back to that time. [1:24] It’s interesting. So yesterday, I recorded an episode from a quote from Frederick Buechner, where he said, listening to your life is, very fruitful, very, I guess I’d say, very life-giving. [1:44] And so listening to your life. That’s kind of what being next to this magnolia. [1:56] Feels like and smelling it because when I was a kid and you’re climbing a tree man you’re literally in the midst of it. Magnolias have this kind of a smooth yet rough texture to it and a little bit of flake comes off if you grab a branch That smell is I mean there’s nothing like it so these blooms that are that are happening in my front yard I mean I’m 54 years old almost 55 and I was probably 8 or 9 years old when I would climb those trees climb that tree it’s just amazing how that smell connects you. And of course the blooms are gorgeous. This is a Southern Magnolia, I’m pretty sure. Big old white bloom, just this cup that just opens up to the sky and holds like the bee sound that I was trying to get you to hear at the beginning of this. That bee was was at the bottom of one of those petals where some of the, I don’t know, stamens had fallen and it was getting the pollen off of them. [3:16] Just amazing. If you pay attention to nature, you will never be bored. You will be constantly amazed. You will constantly be in awe, and your life will be better for it. So I encourage you, reconnect with something that you knew from your childhood, or just reconnect with everything, because as a species we’ve got so many, many, many connections to plants, animals, places. If we just paid attention to, we could feel it, feel connected just like I am when I smell that magnolia tree and those blooms. So that’s my thought for today. That’s how I’m and listening to my life. I’m David Bourne. See more of this kind of stuff at davidbourne.com. Hope to see you there. Cheers.

I came across this quote today and realized it’s a good explanation of what I’m trying to do with this podcast experiment. “Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery it is. See it for the fathomless mystery it is. In the boredom and the pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness. Touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it. Because in the last analysis, all moments are key moments and life itself is grace.” I came across this quote looking in my Dropbox folder and I’m not even sure how I found it, But I thought, you know what? This is exactly what I’m trying to do (with this short podcast). I’m trying to listen to my life. [1:20] I’m listening to crows right now. Something else, I think they’re chimney swifts. They’re kind of hard to pin down. Buechner talks about the touch, the taste and the smell, Using all your senses to find the holy, H-O-L-Y, holy and hidden part of it. So why is it hidden? I think it is hidden because we don’t see it. It’s there all the time but we generally just don’t look for it. So that fathomless mystery, bottomless mystery, think about that? Is it ever going to be anything but a mystery? I mean there are things that we can feel like we’re certain of but then you think about consciousness itself. And that all gets thrown out of the window. [2:47] But that’s not really a problem, is it? Distraction is Our Main Problem I think the problem we mostly face is this distraction where we don’t, bother to touch, taste, smell, or listen to our lives. But we can change that by deciding to change it. It’s really all it takes. So I guess I’ll ask you, how are you listening to your life right now? [3:24] I think it takes time for sure. You have got to slow down a little bit. You have got to pay attention a little bit more. And you got to ask yourself, is it (this distraction) worth it? Are Your Distractions Worth the Cost? Well, what are you trying to do? Why are you so busy? Why aren’t you doing that? Are you, trying to do something so that you will then have the time to do this? I think that’s too often what we do. We put off this listening, because we’re too busy doing other things, thinking, oh, we’re gonna get to that. But we never get to that because the present moment is all we ever have. [4:24] I’m saying this not as someone who’s got it all figured out, because I don’t. But when I saw that quote today, I thought, yeah, that’s it. Recording this podcast, writing, paying attention, trying to create something on a regular basis, in a very small way, that’s what this is all about. This is what I’m trying to do here. So I’m going to read this quote that I came across. It’s a good one. So I hope you’ll take that challenge. Listen to your life and try to look for that fathomless mystery and see what you find. I hope you find something great. <!-- BOTTOM HIDE ### 2DO: - Task1 - Task2 ### THEINSPIRATION - ### OUTLINE - ### SHORTDESCRIPTION - ### HEADLINEIDEAS - ### CHECKLIST _x_ Title _x_ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, _x_ [powerpress] in place _x_ Image correct __ Has internal links _x_ Links Checked _x_ CTA _x_ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked __ Post link to master link file. Confronting Limiting Beliefs Helps You Find the Truth – DavoShow026

I’m Confronting A Limiting Belief To See What Happens I have a limiting belief about using video for this Davo Show Project. I think video is going to be too hard to use and it will mess up a good thing. The irony is that I’m great at video. I have 35 plus years working with it. The problem is that my standards don’t match the time and energy I have for this project. So there’s friction between two parts of me. One part wants to use video because it’s fun, because I love it, and because it will broaden the reach of this project. But the other part is very particular, and wants to do it in certain ways. And those ways, usually take a lot of time and energy, and bring out my critical nature. So I made this podcast in combo with video in very challenging environment on purpose. I need to see what it feels like to do what I don’t want to do. Because sometimes you have just got to try things to see how they feel, and to learn what happens. You don’t know anything until you’ve actually done the thing. What’s a limiting belief that’s holding you back right now? Sometimes you think that you’re not good enough. But other times it’s because you’re too good. Limiting beliefs don’t care. They just want to limit you and keep you in the place that they think is safe. Where are you staying safe? How would you would like to say yes to, but you won’t because a part of you says no? What Is The Davo Show? Examples from Living Life to the Fullest Connecting with Nature and the Outdoors David Bourne’s Short Form Audio Shipped from the Field Quick Experiments in Thought and Sound Listen to This Episode 026 Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes here… http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Rough Transcript Hey folks, it’s David Bourne. I am making a video from Oak Island. It’s really windy as, As you can probably hear. These microphones that I’m using are picking up a lot of that wind so I apologize for that. [0:49] It’s also raining, which is not the best time to be filming, but that’s kind of the point today. I’m making this video version in stereo out here at the beach. A little shot of the beach, of the ocean rather. I’m making this to prove a point to myself. And what I’m doing is I’m countering an idea that I have. And that idea is a limiting belief that says I shouldn’t be making videos for the Davo show because that’ll be way too hard and that’ll complicate things too much. So I needed to challenge that belief and see what would happen if I actually made a video. And so that’s what I’m doing. Because whenever you want to do something and that thing is hard, there’s a very good, chance you’re going to have some limiting beliefs come up. And that’s one of my limiting beliefs. I have a lot of experience making videos and making them professionally and being paid to make them and that kind of experience can be counterproductive when you’re trying to do something quick and dirty like I’m trying to do for the Davo Show. Because that part of me shows up and says no you’re not doing that right no, you should not be shooting in the rain with an iPhone and stereo in the wind. [2:17] Because that’s gonna cause all kinds of problems and it is causing problems sure enough technical problems but really that doesn’t matter if what you want to do is to share your story with the world. The technical stuff, yes, it’s important but it’s not as important as you getting out there and so I’m doing this because I want to make a point to myself. That number one I can do it and I’ll still live because there’s a part of us that feels like it’s gonna be horrific but it’s not gonna be horrific it’s just gonna be a thing not a big deal. [2:54] I’m gonna finish this recording get back inside where it’s dry and warm, and hopefully you can hear the awesomeness of these waves in stereo. [3:07] Which is why I’m recording in stereo, so you can hear the beach just a little bit more realistically. So, enjoy a few moments of Oak Island, and I hope to see you out there folks. This is David Bourne from DavidBourne.com. Cheers!

Why Outdoor Showers Are More Awesome – DavoShow025

Have You Ever Taken an Outdoor Shower? I love them,. And I’m not sure why. But, I have a theory… IONS Listen to This Episode 025 What Is the Davo Show? I’ve been here over 24 hours and man, that’s nice. It’s funny how quickly you can settle into a place. Right now I’m watching three huge pelicans, ride the surf. They’re not really riding the surf, but I think they are because what they do is they fly about six inches above the surface of the water. And then when they get to a wave, they just kind of surf it like a surfer might. They don’t touch it, but they definitely get in the wave. And maybe there’s a little poof of air. [1:02] That they like. And here comes one, two, three, four, five, six more of them doing the exact same thing. I’m pretty sure these are brown pelicans and I’m, pretty sure they all do it and it’s so cool to watch. Almost as cool as when you see one of them crash dive into the water and there’s this giant burst of, whiteness and then the next thing you know they pop up and they probably got a fish. I don’t know, but I think that’s what they’re doing. So believe it or not, this episode is about outdoor showering because I just took one and it was, amazing. It made me think, why are outdoor showers more appealing to me than normal showers? I have no idea, but I always enjoy my outdoor shower and I was thinking is it just because it’s in a different place than usual kind of you. [2:06] Know out in the open a little bit more exposed maybe a little bit more dangerous you know you’re standing there naked and I don’t know but that didn’t really make sense. I have a theory and it makes zero logical sense but this is what it is because this is the Davo Show and I could do anything I want so I, throw out this idea. And it’s my one-word idea that is the answer for why outdoor, showers are better than indoor showers for people like me. That one word is ions. [2:49] I’m not even sure what an ion is, but I just have an instinct that there’s some kind of ion thing going on when you take an outdoor shower. It just doesn’t happen in the indoors. If you have any proof of that or disproof of that, please let me know? Because ions is my answer. [3:16] So that’s all I got today here at Caswell Beach. I’m actually Oak Island, technically. It’s a little farther east than, let’s see, like I said last night, I’m facing due south, facing the Bahamas and Cuba. It’s a weird twist of curvature of the land. And I’m pretty sure this is called Long Bay. There’s a cut into the continent that’s called Long Bay. And Long Bay forces, or forces, it makes this part of the world face south. And so the sunrise does not come up right in front of you, it comes up way over to the, side where you really wouldn’t expect it. To the left side. [4:19] So folks, I’m David Bourne. You’ve found this podcast somewhere on the internet, but you can find more at davidbourne.com. Hope to see you there. Cheers.

    At the Beach – DavoShow024

The Davo Show from the Beach! What Is the Davo Show? A short-form audio podcast A place to experiment with ideas, sound and quick podcast production. Mostly, I create sounds from nature or music. But sometimes I’ll post an audio file that just doesn’t fit anywhere else in my online ecosystem. Where Can I Find The Davo Show? You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes at http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast Unedited Transcript [0:17] Hey, folks, it’s David Bourne. And that sound you’re hearing, you may recognize is the Atlantic Ocean. I am at Oak Island, North Carolina. I’m facing the water and the facing due south. Because when you look out over the beach at Oak Island, you don’t look east like you might think. You look due south. So if you went straight, if you could, as the crow flies fly like a crow all the way south you would cross over the Bahamas, you would go over central Cuba somewhere called Florida Not Florida that’s in the United States but there is a town called Florida in central Cuba somewhere between Las Tunas and Sanctu Spiritus. [1:40] I know that because I’ve been to Cuba and I looked on the map and that is what’s due south of me, which is kind of crazy because, I don’t know, when you’re on the Atlantic Ocean, you look over the ocean, you kind of think you’re looking at Europe, or, I don’t know, Africa. But I am looking at the Bahamas and Cuba. So I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t have my map on my phone. I’m also looking at a boat with some very, very bright lights that’s about, oh, I don’t know, 150 yards offshore. It’s probably about a hundred foot long boat. I think it is a dredge boat, I don’t know. [2:33] It’s pretty unusual for me to see a big old boat like that. Is it a ship? I don’t know, what’s the line between a ship and a boat? It’s pretty close to a ship. [2:45] So I’m here at the beach and I am excited to be here. My lesson for today, what I’ve learned today, is it is just really nice to get away. [2:57] You know, in your mind you think it’s going to be nice, but when you actually get there you’re just like, oh my gosh, this is so nice to get away, especially when it’s a nice place. And we’re close to the beach. We’ve got that constant sound of the waves churning. It’s not too crowded here. It’s not noisy at all. You know, it’s just pretty close to perfect, so I’m just grateful. And I’m remembering you know it is worth the how many hours did we drive I don’t, know it took about six hours from door to door because we stopped a lot we brought the dogs and they take a lot of stops and so it was a long day and I’m tired but that’s… my lesson for today that you know it’s good to go get away but when you actually get there it feels worth it. So I’m soaking it in. I’m enjoying the sights and the sounds. Got some folks down on my left. I see some, flashlights on the beach. Probably some kids with a family looking for shells. [4:19] I’ve got on my right that boat, ship, whatever that is, and I’m just glad to be here. So I hope wherever you are, you’re glad to be where you are. If you’re not, then take a deep breath, look around. My guess is there’s something there that’s pretty cool if you just appreciate it. What I Learned Being Coached By A Millions-Earning Coach Today – DavoShow023

What I Learned Being Coached By A Millions-Earning Coach Today In this episode, I cover how and why I got coached by Rich Litvin, a world-class coach today. But more importantly, how I came to see that I’m still hiding from something I deeply care about. So it’s time to make some changes. What Do You Want to Change in Your Life?? What do you want to bring into the world but still struggle to manifest? What are you waiting for? What’s keeping you from believing that you can get what you want and be that person that’s waiting inside you? What Is The Davo Show? Examples from Living Life to the Fullest Connecting with Nature and the Outdoors Music and Rhythms David Bourne’s Short Form Audio Shipped from the Field Quick Experiments in Thought and Sound Listen to This Episode 023 Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes here… http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Rough Transcript [0:14] Hey everybody, welcome to the Davo Show, where I make podcasts every day, every day but one day a week. Everybody needs a rest. My goal for this podcast is to make them early in the morning so that they’re done, but I’m looking up at the sky and there’s just the slightest bit of blue left in it, which is kind of surprising considering that it’s almost 9 30 eastern standard time, it’s mid-may so the longest days of the year are not here yet. [1:00] It’s pretty quiet i can hear a dryer that’s uh running that’s the house sounds, Otherwise, it’s pretty dang quiet. [1:19] I think I hear crickets. It’s really hard because my tinnitus, which is permanent ringing in my ear, particularly my left ear, it seems pretty loud right now. But my guess is, is there are some insects out there making some noise. And of course, here comes a car. That’s all right. I’m okay. Even though it’s this late, I wanted to get it done early, but I’m okay with it because, it just doesn’t matter. Really, that’s just a rule that I impose on myself. And I’m not going to let this take very long. And that has to do with today’s content of this podcast. Because what this is about is me being coached by a millions-earning coach, meaning one of, the top coaches in the world coached me today. And I figure, well, that doesn’t happen every day. So I’m going to talk about that for a bit and post that up to the Davo Show podcast, where I can post anything I want. And just talk about what happened and why that happened and what came of it. [2:47] Or what’s coming of it I should say because I can feel on my belly that something’s coming of it. I’ll talk about that, Towards the end of this but let me just tell you what happened first so, I am in Rich Litvin’s class and there was a zoom call today and there are about 50 of us on there, with rich and typically he’ll call out a few folks he’ll ask some questions and, and he’ll go through the list and he’ll coach some folks. [3:21] And so I got picked because when he asked the question, and I’m not gonna remember this exactly, but it was a question that had to do with why are you holding back? That’s how I’m interpreting the question. Holding back from becoming the coach, you wanna be charging the prices, you wanna be coaching the type of people you wanna coach, that kind of question. Doing what you want to do is how I interpret that. And so I didn’t really know, but I thought, well, I just don’t feel that experienced. I’ve only been coaching for a couple of years. And so he coached a woman who, you know, she was great and Rich typically does some transformative stuff. So yeah, that happened for sure. And for some reason he picked mine. I think the reason he picked it is because it’s pretty common, common. Not that it was anything special. [4:22] But he pulled that one out of the list of 50 or so answers that people were given and asked to coach me. And it’s funny because before I got on the call, I thought if Rich asked anybody if they want to be coached, I’m going to raise my hand quickly. He did that in the last call and I did raise my hand. And, you know, it’s pretty scary, especially in front of a bunch of folks you don’t know, and this high power, and I say millions earning, what does that mean? Well, it just means that there are people out there who are willing to pay him a lot of money to be coached. And so that somehow makes the stakes higher. but I was like, dang, I’m at, that’s super valuable. So, allergies are kind of bad right now. [5:17] But it’s worth it to be outside. [5:24] He started asking me questions about my life. What did you study in college? Literature. Who is your favorite author? Shakespeare. What’d you do after that? Got a job, then went back to school for media arts. Okay, what about that? Well, worked at Duke Hospital. Also worked at a camp, which was transformative too. I worked at Duke Hospital with a bunch of surgeons. He’s like, oh, with a bunch of surgeons, So he thought that was kind of interesting. And so I just said, yeah, I just helped them transition from analog media to digital media, and help them with their educational materials. And so he’s like, what happened after that? So he’s like, well, I got a job teaching at the local university and taught there. And they said, eventually you’re going to have to get, a better degree if you’re going to keep teaching here. He’s like, what’s that mean? It’s like, well, an MFA, it’s Masters of Fine Arts, it’s a terminal degree if you’re gonna teach in a art department, you can have a non-PhD, it’s called an MFA. It’s a PhD kind of for artists, but more based on artwork versus, I guess, writing a doctor’s thesis. So, by this point, I knew kind of what Rich was doing. [6:54] He was saying, you know, getting me to tell me my experience, because I’m someone who just said, I don’t feel very experienced. So he goes all the way back to college and then, but then he asks a question which I thought, you know what, I’m going to dig a little deeper here. I’m with Rich Litvin. I need to be a little bit more honest, more vulnerable. [7:19] See what comes up and so when he asked me about, Artwork kind of art I made I told him about this. It was my final master’s MFA thesis piece, It was this nest I called it an osprey nest and it I make kind of crappy looking this that’s what it looked like pretty much bunch of sticks, But in the middle of it, I put this house and in the house there was a tiny little TV screen, and I hadn’t thought about that thing in years decades really not much but you know, He asked me to describe it and I was like well, it’s a sarsaparilla nest and that connected me. [8:06] To some loss and I somehow said, you know the thing that got me to coach got me into coaching was was the realization that I had done a lot of work, because my dad died when I was 11 years old, and my best friend killed himself, when we were 21 years old. And I dug in, and I went and worked through the grief, and I studied life. I studied personal growth. I didn’t know it at the time, spirituality. You know, I really went deep. I didn’t say this, but I stared into the abyss, but did not go in. But I was on the rim of it looking in. I guess meaning, you know, I mean, I was really questing life and death, on profound levels and doing a bunch of art around it. And this osprey nest is kind of the last big piece of art that I’ve ever read about it. And the osprey is kind of a phoenix rising up from the ashes, the electronic ashes, maybe. [9:12] So I thought that was interesting. You know, here, how am I talking about this piece of art that I haven’t thought of in years? But that’s what a great coach can do is dig stuff up. And I forget the other questions he asked, but he got me to say, or I felt compelled to say that, And I, when this course, speaking of the course that I was taking, am taking, that we were all in together, I said, this is something that I, you know, I don’t have enough time and it’s pretty expensive, I don’t want to do this. But then I thought about it and I thought, that’s just bullshit. I want to take this course. What did that mean to me? So, what that means is at that moment when I signed up for the course, I… [10:14] In a sense, jumped into the abyss because I went somewhere I wasn’t ready to go, meaning I knew that I needed to take this course because I knew that it was something that was going to push me harder than I was going to push myself. And it was going to help me to realize, what it is within me that I really want to do and kind of help me figure out, and I say kind of because I’m still working on it, figure out why I’m not doing that yet. So, a great coach is going to call you out on your shit. My alarm on my phone went off. Hopefully, the recording is still going. Here we are in real time, folks. Yes, it is. I’ll back up a little bit just in case the alarm messed that up. Goodness, you’d think I would learn these things, but I don’t. [11:04] So, a powerful coach is going to ask you powerful questions. powerful questions. And the powerful thing that Rich got me to was to the realization within me, to say, I signed up for this course because I knew it’s what I needed. And I had been hiding. And here’s the podcast, talk about meta. Because I mentioned I’ve been podcasting a lot. And he’s like, well, the book that Rich Litvin Clifford and Steve Chandler wrote, I don’t know, seven or eight years ago. It was basically in opposition to this idea that you need to have a podcast or you need to do all this social media stuff. [11:48] Now, Rich has all this stuff, but that’s not why he’s a millions-earning coach. [11:58] He’s a fantastic world-class coach because he knows a great method and he lives it, and that is to put yourself out there on a regular basis and to connect with people in meaningful, deep ways. And that’s what I’m trying to do with this podcast. That is true. But I’m also needing and wanting to do that more, in a way that pushes my coaching forward in the real world, not just the digital space, online content, marketing, and all that. And I feel like after reflecting on this, it’s like, well, is this podcast a waste of time? No, it’s not. It’s just not the main thing, by any means. The main thing is me sitting down every day and saying, who would I like to talk to today? Who do I just want to reach out to and connect with? Not to coach, just to connect, because it’s in connecting with people, in genuine ways that we put ourselves out to the world in a genuine way so that we can show up fully as who we are and who we wanna be and who we can be. And we co-create that. [13:14] People, the people we connect with, and eventually that’s going to lead to more connections, which can lead to more coaching. Doesn’t have to, but that’s probably what’s going to happen because I’m going to lead with my natural self and be curious and want to know what’s up with people. And if in that conversation, I feel like I could help them, then I’m going to say so. Maybe that’s through coaching or maybe that’s just through helping people as people do. So that’s where I am. The podcast is still cranking out. I’m still putting it out there. I’m still putting myself out there in that sense, but that is the easy thing. The harder thing is going to be for me to sit down every day and say, who do I want to connect with? And is that hard? It’s not hard. It’s just that I have this perception that it’s hard because it’s really not. In fact, I just did it 20 minutes ago. I said, man, you gotta reach out to somebody before you get on that podcast and talk about this. So I did. I reached out to someone who I admire and thought, you know what? I wanna catch up with that person. So I sent him an email. Said, I hope we can be in touch. So what’s next? I hear a dog out there. [14:34] You don’t usually hear that. It’s interesting. So what’s next? Well, I guess I’ll see what happens tomorrow. My guess is it’s going to be, more like How I want it to be deep down because I got coached by somebody powerful and I got that power within me, The coaching helped me see something And and now that I see it i’m like, yeah, that’s it, That’s that’s really what I want, And I want to help do that for more people. So if you hear this that resonates with you give me a call we can talk about, You talk about anything, but if you know me give me a call or you can find me at Davidbourne.com, And I don’t say that to say that this is a sales pitch But it actually is because the pitch is, We want to do things that we’re not doing. [15:32] And sometimes we get so distracted with good things that we don’t let ourselves remember that what we really want are the great things. So what’s a great thing that you want, that you’re hiding from, that you’re holding back on, that you’re not doing because some part of you says that’s a stupid idea, or we don’t have time yet, or you’re not ready yet? Look, I’m the same way. I saw that rich today. We’re all like this, but we can all, Work on it to get better and the more we do it the closer we’re gonna get there. So, Thanks for listening. I’m David Bourne. Hope to see you out there. Cheers. <!-- HIDDENmoveAndReplaceTHEEND TITLE:: START DATE:: 2023-05-23 Tue PUBLISHED DATE:: ddate PROMOTED:: ddate PROOFED:: ddate SITELINK: https://davidbourne.com/ MP3LINK:: CATEGORY:: KEYWORDS:: podcast, creativity, life coaching, # SUMMARY:: ### 2DO: - Task1 - Task2 ### THEINSPIRATION - ### OUTLINE - ### SHORTDESCRIPTION - ### HEADLINEIDEAS - ### CHECKLIST __ Title __ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, __ [powerpress] in place __ Image correct __ Has internal links __ Links Checked __ CTA __ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked __ Post link to master link file. The Antagonists Inside Us – DavoShow022

How we all have an Antagonist inside of us, and it’s not all bad. Yes, the Antagonist archetype within us can cause us grief. But, learning to appreciate what it is trying to do for us is a great first step towards acceptance of all our parts. Show Notes An unusual appearance of the Great Crested Flycatcher Jill Bolte-Taylor has taught me a lot about the four parts of the brain, one of which is represented here by the Antagonist archetype. Listen to This Episode 022 Where Can I Find The Davo Show? You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes at http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast Rough Transcript (Bird sound) [0:15] That is a bird that’s not around very much. It’s a Great Crested Flycatcher. Thanks to the Merlin app, I know what it is. I’ve got two of them in my yard right now it’s about the size of a mocking bird. It’s gray and pretty bold because it’s only about 30 feet away and here I am talking and right in front of it and it’s not acting like it’s concerned at all. [1:14] So pretty cool. I couldn’t tell you if I’ve ever seen one of these in my yard. I started recording on the Merlin app because I thought, you know, I don’t recognize that sound. Not that I know all the bird sounds because I definitely do, not. But as I’ve said in some earlier recordings this past week, it’s uh, it’s cool to start this project back up where I’m going out into nature and paying attention and waiting to see if something happens. So this is what has happened. The, the crested, great crested, flycatcher? See I don’t even know the name yet. So pretty cool. [2:19] Now this brings Up what I wanted to talk about. And as you can hear my voice is pretty croaky. I think that’s because of all the pollen and all the time outside recently. But I think, um, I’m struggling to say this, what am I trying to say? Oh, there it goes. (The bird flies off.) [2:50] I’m trying to say that being outside and doing this project has been really great. And there’s a part of me that thinks, asks myself, why am I doing this? Why am I trying to do this every day? Okay, okay, I take one day off a week. I’ve been taking off Sundays. Why am I doing this? Like, is this really something? And I have to recognize that that’s partly my antagonist that’s kicking in. [3:21] I believe that we’ve got four main characters that live inside of us. And one of them is the antagonist, meaning it’s where the resistance comes from. It’s that part of us that tries to self-protect. The ego isn’t within this realm. It’s the survival part of us, meaning the part of us that wants to keep us safe. The part of us that did keep us safe as you know whenever, everything was about feeding yourself and protecting yourself from your enemies every day. And yes, while that’s true to some degree, it’s not nearly as true as it used to be back whenever things were much much more hand-to-mouth. And so So that’s kind of left over. That antagonistic part of us serves us well until it doesn’t. Meaning when this voice kicks in and says, Dave, why are you doing this? Like this project is stupid. taking up way too much of your time. [4:49] You know, I’m not seeing the benefit of this. Well, I know, Because I have awareness which is so important. I have awareness that this antagonistic part is within me, That is going to be some self-critical. [5:09] I Have to say, okay what which voice is this and I’ve identified because you don’t you don’t always know that’s the thing, You don’t know Like if you have a thought, You don’t know where that thought is coming from. It’s just a thought but, If we can raise our awareness and say wait a minute, which part of myself is talking here? I’ve recognized that this Voice is my antagonist now. [5:42] An Antagonist, you may know is from storytelling and from narrative. It’s the bad guy. So, what about the protagonist? Yep, we’ve got one of those two. That’s the hero. And we’ve got a protagonist, we’ve got an antagonist, I believe we’ve got an artist/ lover, and then we’ve got a guide, within us. And those four characters, they line up with the four, gosh, they line up with the four seasons, they line up with four parts of the day, they line up with, fours as you see them in religion, in art, in cyclical patterns that we see in narratives. [6:38] I’m obsessed with this idea of four parts and the four phases of change. I’ll link to some other places where I talk about that. But this antagonist, I want to talk about it because the other day I realized, you know, what, antagonist implies that it’s a bad thing. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing. And that’s really important because self-compassion is so critical when you’re working through personal growth. And it’s super important that you, that if you recognize something within yourself, that, there’s a part of you that is trying to help. So this antagonist throughout human history, his job was to keep us safe, to keep us away from the mountain lions and you know keep us keep us away from snakes whatever is bad. [7:40] Tribes you know when tribal I mean we still have tribes today but you know what I mean like when the people that lived five miles away we’re trying to kill you, and your job was to keep your clan safe and kill them if they came into your clan. That’s super simplistic to say that, but that part has served us well. So what about now in modern times? What do we do with that part of us? Well, unfortunately, it does go off the rails. It sends us into wars. It sends us into calling people the other, and You know that. [8:20] It doesn’t serve us. It doesn’t push humanity forward very well in the way. [8:28] That it used to. But if we can recognize that part of ourselves, and if we can say, hey, is this trying to help me out? Like, why does this voice say, Dave, this project’s taking too much time? Well, sometimes it does. Let’s tell them the truth. Sometimes it takes too much time, and I don’t want to give it that much time, which is why I’m pulling back on the web page of this podcast. I’m not gonna put as much time into that because that’s where most of the time goes. It’s pretty, quick for me to record something, send it to the server, and you know press the publish button. All that’s quick. What’s not quick is me putting in a transcript, writing down a summary, linking to other stuff So I’m pulling back a bit on that side of things, at least for now, to say, okay, Critical Self, you got a point, and thank you for, thank you for pointing that out, but this project’s still going forward. I’m still gonna publish six days a week, every day but Sunday, and I’m still gonna go outside and hope that something cool happens like this crested flycatcher and I gotta look it up. [9:53] Is it the great crested flycatcher? (Does that imply that there’s a lesser crested flycatcher?) [10:01] Something cool is going to happen in nature, which is going to get you talking about something else that’s been on your mind. So that antagonist could be a good thing. And it can also help you, you can tap into that fighting energy when you want to get something done. Like, I want to get this project done, I want to get my ideas out into the world, and I can tap into that part of myself to get the energy to do that. That. It’s just a little bit of a mind shift and recognize that at times I’m, gonna need that and at times I’m gonna have that kick in. And so I think that’s all I want to say about the antagonist right now, but in the future I will be talking more about the protagonist, the antagonist, the artist / lover, and the guide, and also talking about how those four characters are within us all. A lot of these ideas are connected to some ideas I’ve gotten from Jill Bolte-Taylor and the four parts of the brain, but also from Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey. And also from just so many stories, the narrative of the protagonist, the hero, fighting against some antagonistic force or person or group. [11:30] And then those artists, the people that come together and create something new, so that that new thing can then benefit the community, and that hero can become the guide for the community. So this is David Bourne signing off for now with the frog voice, which hopefully will be going away pretty soon. You can find out more at DavidBourne.com, hope to see you there. Cheers.

The Hidden Meaning Behind This Short Podcast Project – DavoShow021

The Hidden Meaning Behind This Short Podcast Project Two days ago I was getting coached and the true significance of this project came up. This podcast project is really about my love of nature, tech, connection and life itself. I’m sharing the things I love in a fun, interesting, and simple way. Making these recordings every day is a way for me to share my love with the world. How are you doing that? Episode Highlights – TheDavoShow-021 My inspiration for recording was an “uncommon” pine warbler, Pine Warbler Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology The Merlin Bird ID app has helped me identify the warbler and tons of other species I did not know. But it’s not just about birds. Fore example, what’s that gob of spit doing on these pine trees? All About Spittlebugs, the Bugs That Mimic Spit What Is The Davo Show? Examples from Living Life to the Fullest Connecting with Nature and the Outdoors Music and Rhythms David Bourne’s Short Form Audio Shipped from the Field Quick Experiments in Thought and Sound Listen to This Episode 021 Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes here… http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Rough Transcript [0:15] I want to talk about birds, which I’ve done a lot lately for this project. [0:31] I’m not sure if you can hear that over the din of the lawnmower I hear, and of course the road sounds but, there is a uncommon bird out in the forest it’s called a pine warbler. (It sounds like this sound but) with a much, higher pitch than that. So the pine warbler is just a… Am I a birder? I don’t even know that I’ve ever seen one, but thanks to the Merlin bird ID app I have heard it, before and it’s made me think about why I’m into birds. The truth is I’m really ,not that into birds. I mean, yeah, I like them, but what I really like is just the, vast richness of life. [1:56] I’m just curious, you know when there’s a bird that’s uncommon and I know that that sound is not one that I hear very often I find it interesting. And yeah, I do love birds. You know, though I wouldn’t call myself a birder. I don’t identify as a birder, but I love birds. So, bird lover, nature lover, just life lover, really. What I’m learning about this through coaching. A couple of days ago I was coaching with a friend. She was coaching me. We are swapping coaching with each other to get practice and to learn and just to get better, to learn about ourselves. I’m learning about myself. She’s learning about herself. We coach each other. I do this with lots of people, lots of us. You know, we’re coaching all over the place. [3:20] Because it’s fascinating, for one. You know, it’s amazing to sit down with somebody, every couple of weeks and hear what they’re working on and hear how it’s changed, hear what’s the same. Just really interesting. Life gets better when you pay attention. And I was coaching with her the other day and she helped me realize that this podcast project, The Davo Show, what it’s really about, is just me loving life. And this pine warbler is a great indication of that. [4:07] You know, I recognized that it’s unusual. Why? Because I listen a lot and I, I noticed that’s different. And if you just pay attention to life, things get really interesting because you’ll start seeing things, that you didn’t see before. Curiosity, like Love is endless. And it just becomes more fun, more challenging in a way, in a good way. In a good way. I’ve learned recently that curiosity is like love in that it’s endless, meaning there’s no limitation on it. It just keeps going and going and going and that’s interesting. What’s that spit doing on these pine trees? And as I’m standing out here talking to you, I’m noticing spit, balls of spit in the little white pine trees that are right in front of me. I mean, how random is that? Why would there be balls of spit in pine trees? Well, I’m pretty sure that’s the spittle bug. I hadn’t noticed it until today. I’m gonna try to walk out here. It’s a pretty dense part of the forest. I’ll take a picture of this. Balls of spit. [5:36] Little bubble balls in these pine trees. It’s just another example. Outer growth is inner growth. If you pay attention, what you will see, what you will hear, what you will learn, how you’ll grow, and of course that goes for the inside of you as much as what’s outside of you, and it’s really, all the same thing. So I’m gonna go look up this spittle bug now and see what that’s all about. I have no idea what a spittle bug looks like. I do know what, their reproductive system looks like. It looks like a ball of spit on a tree. This world is crazy. I’m grateful for all of this. [6:20] So I’m grateful for the pine warbler. I have not seen him. There he is. Grateful for the spittlebug and grateful for the opportunity to talk to all of this about you. So thanks for listening. I’m David Bourne. You can find me at Davidbourne.com. I hope you will continue to listen to The Davo Show. Cheers. <!-- TITLE:: START DATE:: 2023-05-20 Sat PUBLISHED DATE:: 2023-05-20 Sat PROMOTED:: ddate PROOFED:: ddate SITELINK: https://davidbourne.com/ MP3LINK:: CATEGORY:: KEYWORDS:: podcast, creativity, life coaching, # SUMMARY:: ### 2DO: - pine warbler, [Pine Warbler Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pine_Warbler/overview#) - spittle bug - ### CHECKLIST _x_ Title _x_ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, _x_ [powerpress] in place _x_ Image correct __ Has internal links _x_ Links Checked _x_ CTA _x_ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked __ Post link to master link file. What Are You Struggling to Share with the World? – DavoShow020

What are You Struggling to Put Out into the World? Do you have a project that you want to get off the ground, but can’t? Do you know why you are struggling? What thoughts or excusing are you using to hold you back? I’ve been asking myself these same questions. Check out this podcast to learn how iteration, curiosity** and a desire to learn and grow have all come together. Highlights From DavoShow-020 Reflections on this podcast, the gear I’ve used to make it and how much I love tweaking things and learning. This audio recording format helps me get out lots of ideas quickly. Writing, on the other hand, takes me much longer because I still lack the confidence I desire. What Is The Davo Show? Examples from Living Life to the Fullest Connecting with Nature and the Outdoors Music and Rhythms David Bourne’s Short Form Audio Shipped from the Field Quick Experiments in Thought and Sound Listen to This Episode 020 Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes here… http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Rough Transcript [0:14] I stopped to record because I heard a hawk and there’s just something about raptors that really gets me excited. [0:37] The problem with them is they don’t stick around. Usually, they take off. They’re, going far and fast. So I might not, I might not be able to get the recording that I was looking for. I’ve been thinking about recordings and you know, it’s pretty amazing what our devices can do. This is every recording that I’ve made this past week and a half doing this new Davo Show. It’s all pretty much been done on my iPhone, iPhone 14, and I’ve mostly been using this very full featured but basic in some ways too, app called Voice Recorder. [1:46] And I’m beginning to think that I’d like to record with some other devices. I’ve got tons of great microphones. Tons. I don’t have tons. I have a few great, microphones. I have tons of like lavalier mics that cost 10 bucks a piece, wired lavalier mics. I’ve got a good wireless mic that I love. It just doesn’t interface all that well with the iPhone. [2:16] But it’s making me think I want to bring out some of my great mics. I’ve got a great shotgun mic that picks up sound from far away and focuses in on it. So, that would be fun to play with, experiment with, which gets me thinking. A Way to Experiment This project has been a great way for me to experiment on many levels and you, You know, it’s been fun to tweak things, even though I’ve got the basics, which is open the recorder app, click the record button. Save it change the name send it to the all phonic audio processing server Then it’ll send it to my podcast server and then I just make that connection from WordPress. [3:22] Which only takes a few minutes That’s the basics, but from there I get to build, on top of that So do I use a different mic? Do I use a different recorder? Do I save it in a different way? Do I, Tweak the settings in all phonic. Do I use a different intro or outro? And yeah, I tend to get distracted by those additions to the core idea, but that’s the fun of it and as long as I’m doing it in a way that is still fun Engaging and making it better or, Not necessarily better, but just trying different things which does make it better because you learn different ways to do things… Experimenting, you know, there’s no one right way to do anything. They’re just different ways. I, Wanted to be able to make quick podcasts on my website, So that I could add links and add a transcript, text, anything, or just add nothing. [4:33] And, you know, it’s just been a really fun way to experiment and get ideas out into the world quickly. Speaking is Faster then Writing I don’t have a lot of confidence in my writing ability. I just, I don’t, you know, I’m working on that. I love literature.I was a literature major in undergrad. And I’m working on it. I know I’m a good writer. I’m getting better at it, but I’m not as fast as I want to be. So this podcast has been a way that I can get out ideas quickly. Iteration Speeds Up Change Now, why do I want to do it quickly? Well, this idea of iteration. I’ve talked a lot about the change cycle. You know, I see it so much in nature. We talked about the oak tree the other day and how it sends out hundreds of thousands of acorns over its life, and only one, statistically, only one of those turns into another great big oak tree. And so that’s like us with our ideas, putting ideas out into the world, iteration. And so getting things out quickly and on a regular basis and not getting bogged down, that’s really been the beauty of this project for me. So you, the listener, why would you care about this? [6:01] Well, I know that a lot of folks struggle with the same problems that I do. They struggle with this idea of getting ideas out and getting ideas out quickly. And, you know, maybe you’re like me, where you like to try it and experiment with a lot of different creative practices and different methods of doing things. And maybe you get distracted like I do. So my encouragement to you is to focus on the smallest part, get really good at that, focus on that, meaning, like me, it’s for this podcast, hit record, send it to the servers, then hit publish. That’s the essence of it. I’m hearing the cicada again. [7:02] I’m walking towards it. I think it’s getting louder. So I have talked about cicadas in two of these recordings. Now this would be a great example of me tweaking. Like if I had my good shotgun mic and my good recorder I could get that sound and it would be really clear. [7:28] You know at this point it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like I’m doing a cicada documentary or cicada studies or blah blah. It doesn’t have to be perfect. I digress. So, why should you care? I Hope You Are Doing Something You Love Well, I don’t know. I don’t know what you’re doing, but I, hope you’re doing something that you, that excites you, that gets you out doing things that you love. Like this is getting me out in nature, observing, listening. Find a project that gets you where you want to be, doing the things you want to do, and sharing your ideas with the world. That’s, you know, that’s It’s really important to me that we do that, that we become who we think we want to be, become the best version of ourselves. And this practice, this idea of changing by doing things, trying things, testing things, making something new, learning from it, re-evaluating, like, okay, I can do this. I definitely feel like I can produce a podcast today. [8:41] And so I’m doing it. Today’s Friday, so I’m gonna send out a newsletter today. I’m gonna talk about this project. I’ve got a dog who is telling me something. What’s up, dog? Oh, they’re making the sounds, what’s that mean? [9:07] Well, I guess I got to go. The dogs are telling me something’s happening. So, I’ll wrap it up with this question… What are you doing? And Want to do? [9:18] Or let me rephrase it. What do you want to be doing that you’re not doing? How can you make it simpler? How can you do more iterations of it? How can you make it so it’s good enough to share? How can you make it good enough to you? How can you look at it so that it’s something you can put out in the world? You know, I’ve struggled for this for years. I’ll probably always struggle with this, but what I can tell you about this recent project is I’ve found something that works. This method. Go outside, make some nature observations and then tie it in to the creative process, to becoming who you want to be, to enjoying your life and doing the things that you want to do. That’s all I’m doing here. It’s different every day. It’s rough. It’s not perfect in any means, but here it is and I’m loving it. So I So I encourage you to do that. What do you want to do that you’re not doing? How can you do it more often? Share it and learn, grow, become who you want to become next, and then move on to the next thing. [10:41] I’m David Bourne. I hope to see you at DavidBourne.com. Cheers.

Love It Or Kill It – DavoShow019

Learning What You Love Will Help You Not Kill It. This is what I’m learning about this short form, audio project… The iterations of doing it over and over for several days now is teaching me that the things I love are worth building on and protecting. What do I need to protect it from? My own fears that it’s not living up to some higher standard that says it needs to be something else. What do I love about it? I love the simple nature of it, being inspired by something in nature, and reflecting on a deeper connection to an idea. Ultimately, it’s because I love the world and I love life. So far, this podcast has been a good reflection of that simple truth. When you find something that is true to you, don’t let it go. What Is the Davo Show? A short-form audio podcast A place to experiment with ideas, sound and quick podcast production. Mostly, I create sounds from nature or music. Where Can I Find The Davo Show? You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes at http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast Unedited Transcript [0:16] Hey folks, it’s Dave Bourne. In the backyard again. Listening to a robin. You can probably hear that. But there’s also an eastern towhee out there, and a wood thrush. I’ve seen all three of them in my yard. I don’t see any of them right now, but I hear them. Oh, I just saw one fly off the branch. I think that’s the robin. They’re pretty common. The reason I know it was a tohi, the reason I know it was a wood thrush is because my Merlin app identified all of those. I. [1:18] Thought that was a robin. I’m not quite, I’m not quite so good to know what all the calls are, but I am not afraid to use the Merlin app, which is amazing for, bird identification. Particularly amazing the way it uses audio sounds. Audio sounds? That’s redundant. It uses audio to identify bird calls. Really cool. If you haven’t checked it out you should. Just another way to engage with the great outdoors. Yeah, so I’ve gotten to the point where I’m starting to look back on on the work that I’ve done for this project. And that’s just, you know, I’ve taken enough action where I’m starting to understand it. And I wanted to mark that today as, now that’s a chickadee you hear. [2:31] Kind of buzzing. I do know those, and squeaking. But I’ve learned enough from the iterations that I’ve done of this project that it’s starting to sink in what it is. And I was surprised. I got coached on this project twice today. I’m doing coaching training and I coach with fellow coaches, we coach each other. I coach about this a lot, my project, it’s something that I’m working on, the shipping, is a challenge for me. I have tons of ideas, I make tons of stuff, but I don’t share it that much. But with this audio project, this Devo Show podcast, that is changing. [3:28] But that’s not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is, is, well, a couple of things. The first, the problem. We like to focus on problems, so I’m gonna focus there first. But then on the second thing, I’m gonna talk about the awesomeness that I’m finding in this project. So first, the problem. The problem is I’m having a typical tendency to overthink it, to overdo it, and to try to make it into some kind of marketing project, which it already is that, but I’m trying to finesse it. I’m trying to make the web content longer and it’s taking me more time than I want it to, and I’m starting to resent that. And the coaching I was doing was I came with this problem, like I don’t want to kill this project with this desire to turn it into something that I don’t like anymore, which is, that’s happened before with projects like this. [4:34] And so, that’s the problem, which I can overcome. And this is why I can overcome it. The reason I can overcome it is because I’ve discovered what I love about this project. And that’s the spontaneous nature of walking out in nature, being inspired by something like a bird song. [4:56] And relating that to something I’ve learned or something I’m learning or something I want to learn and just start talking about it and process it out loud, share what I know, share what I’m excited about. And the real, that’s the good part, but the really good part that I, that I saw that when When I really do this in the way that I want to do it, what I’m doing is I’m enjoying life, to the fullest. And being out in nature is a big part of that. Being inspired by something is a big part of that, but also sharing my thoughts about change. Of course, there’s so much change in nature, but about how people learn, about how people grow about how I want to learn, how I want to grow, how I want to share ideas and I want to help other people share ideas. I don’t want to help other people move through this stuff, because this is a very human problem. Back to the problem of wanting to do something, but there’s a part of us that thinks it needs to be something else or it’s deficient or whatever. [6:13] Because even with this project that I know and I love, there’s a part of me that thinks that. And I’m accepting that part of me because that’s a part of me that wants it to be useful to my life. And I just have to trust right now that it is going to be useful. I mean, it already is. But that part of me that wants to it to be a success in some monetary term or professional term or I don’t know what, social status, whatever that part of us wants, that’s a normal, part of us that wants things like that. The trick is being aware of it, seeing for what it is, and not letting it kill the project, which I’m not gonna do. Which, is why this project is just gonna be as simple as I can make it. I’m recording it, I’m gonna ship it today, I’ll probably put a title on it, but it’s not gonna take up much of my time because I got to go watch some Ted Lasso that just came out. And I don’t want to miss that and I don’t want to fuck this up this project and I’m not gonna. Pardon my French. So that’s my word out here with the Robins. [7:32] And the chickadee and the. [7:38] Eastern Tohey, That’s a Robin and the, What else did I say do you remember Robin Eastern Tohey wood thrush Chickadee, There’s a lot more stuff out here too, and it’s just waiting to reveal itself, So I’ll sit out here for a few more minutes send this file up to the Auphonic server where it’ll do its magic, send it to the, podcast server, then I’ll log in to WordPress, click publish, and let it get out there and do its thing. So speaking of doing its thing, thank you for listening, and I hope to see you out there. Cheers! <!--

Acorns, Seasons + Iterations of Our Work – DavoShow018

How Your Work is Like an Oak Tree Through the Seasons The four seasons. The four parts of the brain. The four stages of an oak tree’s lifetime. A dormant seed in Winter, A new sprout in Spring, A sapling in Summer, Leaves Falls, Winters waits, And all over again If the tree survives. Your thousands of idea iterations. Like thousands of acorn falling. Most will die. Some survive to live on and fruit again. Show Notes My earlier Jill Bolte Taylor episode covers how Mind, Body, Heart, and Spirit correlate to the four main parts of the human brain. The Recreation Cycle is my name for the Change Cycle that permeates Nature, Art, Literature, Religion and of course, oak trees. I’m pretty sure the Cicadas are back for the summer. My outdoor recordings are about to get a lot more loud! What Is The Davo Show? Typical. Well, that sound is what I was hearing yesterday, thinking it was a cicada. So it was the exact same sound, in a different location. And now, of course, we’re hearing a big old jet engine so I’m trying to talk loudly so that you can hear me because that’s how audio works. If there’s something loud in the background you have to be louder than that and try not to screw the whole thing up. So I’m also hearing some wind in the trees. I guess I’m hearing the leaves hitting each other. And that’s a great sound. Trees are swaying. They have new leaves, mostly. Just a few weeks old. It’s… mmm… is it late spring? Yeah, getting, towards late spring. That’s kind of a sad thought. Let’s call it middle spring. Ah, seasons. Spring is, I think, it is my favorite season. Although I do love fall, and summer has great qualities and so does winter. I love it all, but spring’s my favorite because stuff just pops out and there’s all this new possibility and the end of winter is always a great thing. [1:53] So, on the note of seasons, thanks to Mr. Cicada, a summer season insect who started this recording. Seasons, there are four of them, and I think for whatever reason human beings have divided the four seasons. I guess you could divide it up even more, like we’ve divided the months, but the four seasons are pretty hard to deny, and they’re pretty distinct. [2:28] And believe it or not, those four seasons line up pretty well with the pattern I talked about yesterday, mind, body, heart, and spirit. And the reason I bring that up again is it’s just an excellent way to look at the human psyche, to look at yourself, to ask yourself that super important question, who am I? If you lookat it through those four lenses which align with the four seasons, at least I believe they do. Spring with new possibility, things are just coming out and you’re trying something new. So a tree shoots out of the ground from a seed that has been buried all there buried there all winter. It decides to make an attempt out into the world. And if it can survive the heat of the summer and all the dangerous things, if it can make it into the fall and winter again. [3:33] You know, a tree usually can last several seasons. It just grows and grows where eventually it becomes,if it’s lucky, it becomes the tree that drops the next seeds. And these, I’m looking at these oak trees in my backyard and you know, over time they drop hundreds of thousands, of acorns, or some people call them a-kerns. [4:03] They’re seeds and they end up in the ground or they end up in the belly of a deer and maybe that one gets pooped out a few miles away with some super good fertilizer, which is amazing if you think about it, that whole system, or maybe a squirrel buries it. Another amazing thing nature does. Isn’t nature amazing? It really is if you start to pay attention and think about how amazing both of those things are. It’s like these trees have got deer working for themand squirrels. How in the world did they figure that out? Or was it just chance? We don’t know. but that acorn that goes in the groundand sits there until spring to sprout up, that is like us trying something new. It’s like me trying to get out these podcasts and hopefully I’m getting better and better at it each time I go. Now, I’m making a lot of mistakes. A lot of these are gonna die. They’re gonna wither. They’re not gonna turn into much, but one of them, I’m willing to guess, going to grow into a great big new productive oak tree. Now I don’t know which of the thousands of podcasts, the thousands of acorns that’s going to be. [5:23] But I have hope that that’s what’s going to happen. And I’m not really doing it for that, but I’m just doing it because I want to do it, which is probably what the oak tree does. It just does it because it wants to do it. Maybe it’s not so smart that it knows it has to release hundreds of thousands over its lifetime to just get one oak tree. In fact, that’s what science tells us, is that’s pretty much how it works. One of these huge oak trees is going to produce one other oak tree like it, which is enough. So that’s my thought on the seasons, the cycle of change, what I was just describing there. I call it the change cycle, sometimes I call it the regeneration cycle, (and the Recreation Cycle ) The generations of the oaks you see, the generations of our ideas as some of them grow into fruitful things and some of them wither in the ground or maybe they get eaten by a deer and get pooped out somewhere else. You just don’t know, do you? I’m David Bourne. You can hear more episodes like this at… davidbourne.com. There it is…. Do you hear it? Kind of sounds like a, a hair dryer, but that is a cicada, I’m pretty sure. I doubt you can hear it. [6:52] It’s going to get louder. They are going to get louder as more and more of them come out. So we’ll get that this summer. Until then folks, I’m David Bourne. See you out there. Cheers! <!-- up:: [[Coaching MOC]] tags:: #coaching/lexicon #dbweb #published/yes #people dates:: [[2023-05-16]] summary:: Davoshow audio version of her, with woods sounds url:: https://davidbourne.com/jill-bolte-taylor/ links:: [[Jill Bolte Taylor]] - [[XXX]] - [[XXX]] - TITLE:: START DATE:: 2023-05-17 Wed PUBLISHED DATE:: 2023-05-17 Wed PROMOTED:: ddate PROOFED:: ddate SITELINK: https://davidbourne.com/ MP3LINK:: CATEGORY:: KEYWORDS:: podcast, creativity, life coaching, # SUMMARY:: ### 2DO: - Task1 - Task2 ### CHECKLIST _x_ Title _x_ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, _x_ [powerpress] in place _x_ Image correct _x_ Has internal links __ Links Checked __ CTA __ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked __ Post link to master link file. How Jill Bolte-Taylor Can Help Your Personal Growth – DavoShow017

How Jill Bolte-Taylor Can Help Your Personal Growth – Davo Show 017 “She gave us this big promise that we could tap into that right part of our brain which gives us that connection and that sense of belonging to the universe, which, frankly we’re missing a lot these days in our modern culture.” -DB Show Notes Jill Bolte-Taylor is a neuroanatomist who suffered from a massive stroke in 1996, but lived to share about her experience. Her work has been significant to me for the last decade. In her first book, My Stroke of Insight, was a first hand account of what it’s like to live fully in the Right Brain. Her second book, Whole Brain Living, details how the Left and Right Brain each have a higher and lower functioning half. The lower functioning brain can loosely be understood as “emotional” and protective, in that their main job is to keep us safe. The higher functioning Left and Right Brains correspond to rational thought, creativity and spirituality. Whole Brain Living, was one of the two books that led me to Coaching, in 2021. I’m in the woods hoping to hear the pileated woodpecker again. He’s nearby, so I’m listening. And besides all the road noise that I hear, which is always pretty, loud, I’ll say it. It’s always pretty loud in the daytime, meaning louder than I wish it were. I’m hearing road noise, but I started to hear, as I’m listening, the beginning of those insect sounds that you hear in the summer. And I think it’s It’s a cicada, just barely beginning to start the hum. And it was so subtle that I was not sure what it was. I thought maybe it was a machine off in the distance, because it does sound like a machine. Like a blower, a little bit. But then I thought, no, I’m pretty sure that’s a cicada, kind of in the early sounds. Now, later in the summer it’s going to be super obvious. [1:47] But it got me thinking about what I’ve been working on with this project, which is going, out in the woods, hearing things, seeing things, commenting on that thing. And it’s making me think of how the brain works and how it takes in a stimuli like a sound or a sight and it makes meaning out of that based on our experience or based on just how we react. Like I know, for example, if a snake were nearby, I would have a physical visceral reaction. My mind would probably kick in after that reaction to say, oh, that’s a harmful snake or a not a harmful snake based on my knowledge. [2:41] The, ooh, that’s a snake gut, quick, visceral, deep reaction, that’s a deep brain thing. That’s not something that I have to think about. My brain thinks about it on its own. And so that got me thinking about some of the work of Jill Bolte-Taylor, who is a woman I’ve learned a lot from, especially two years ago when she wrote her second book called Whole Brain Living, and it talked about that the lower functioning part of our brain. I already knew that she believes the brain can be divided into left and right halves, because in her first book (My Stroke of Insight) she talked about how the left half of her brain went offline because she had a stroke. And her experience of that, which spanned several years, of her having the stroke, recovering from the stroke, and becoming her old self again. That recovery and growth process, which was very arduous and painful, but. [3:50] She learned from it that there indeed are two parts of the brain, the left hemisphere, the part that had the stroke for her, which put her into this right, hemisphere state where she felt totally connected to everything. Of course she didn’t know her name, she didn’t know her history, she didn’t know how to speak, she could barely function without medical help. But her major takeaway was that, these different parts of us, they’re all there and they’re all accessible. And she, gave us this big promise that we could tap into that right part of our brain which gives us that connection and that sense of belonging to the universe, which, frankly we’re missing a lot these days in our modern culture. So I was very curious about that. Well, many years later, I don’t know, eight years later, I think the first book was written in 2012 or came out in 2012, and then the second definitely came out in 2022. The whole brain living. [5:02] That second book was really impactful for me because I wanted to know more about this universal oneness connection she was talking about. And she did talk about that, but really what she talked about was the wholeness of the brain, and how it’s not just left and right, but how it’s also higher and lower. And so if you take those two hemispheres and you put them together, you’ve got four parts of the brain. And that was really shocking to me because I happen to have been on a year-long study of looking at a four phase cycle that I’ve come to now call the change cycle. Which is four parts and those four parts line up, perfectly with the four parts of the brain. Which is to say that so often our, Our logical minds capture a problem and we work on that problem by taking action. [6:08] We test the problem. We try to find solutions. We do that with our bodies. We do that through the material world in action. And then, based on that action, we have a result. And we look at that result, and we either integrate it or we reject it. But if we do integrate it, and we learn from it, then it can… And that’s our heart, by the way. The heart part of our brain kicks in, and through the integration and the understanding and the emotional part of it. If real change occurs, then we can then come into our spirit, which is the fourth section. So just to keep you posted on where I am, mind, body, heart, and now spirit. Then we have the entirety of the brain, according to Jill Bolte Taylor. [7:15] So my point in this, in being outside and listening for birds and looking for snakes and just kind of taking in this stimuli and having it bring up associations and thoughts and trying to make a recording out of all that, it just occurred to me that… [7:39] I want a life that takes into account all parts of the brain. And what Jill Bolte Taylor says we need to do for that to happen is to take pause. [7:53] And ask ourselves, which part of us is at work here? Which part of us, mind, body, heart, and spirit is is best suited to this particular position we find ourselves in. Now she doesn’t use the words mind, body, heart, and spirit so much. Those are my terms. But I’ve come to understand personal growth. It’s super helpful if you look at it through those four lenses. So I wanted to talk about Jill today. I wanted to talk about the four parts of the self today, and I wanted to do it out in nature, because that’s always inspiring, and it’s where I feel most connected. And I’ll just follow up this conversation by saying that that spirit realm is the most, important realm because it’s where we can integrate all four together. I’ll be talking more about this in relation to spiritual growth. I’ll be talking more about Joe Bolte Taylor, what I’ve learned from her. Some big bird just cast a shadow on me and I immediately. [9:16] Turned around, looked up to see if I could see what it was. And I don’t see it, but I want to see it. I want to know what that bird is. [9:28] So, my body reacted. My heart wanted to connect with that nature to, I guess, know if it was dangerous or just to know what it was. I come out here to connect and to learn. So, my spirit is just grateful for the experience, and grateful for all of this, just like I’m grateful for you. If you’re listening to this, I appreciate it, would love to hear from you. You can find me at DavidBourne.com. My name is David Bourne, and I hope to see you out there. Cheers! Hope – DavoShow016

On Hope – Episode 016 of the Davo Show This weekend, I heard Bishop Kimberly Lucas give a very powerful message about Hope and it inspired me to share my own short story of Hope. When I was in my 20s I did a lot of personal growth work around the grief of losing both my dad and my best friend at an early age. I realized that if I stripped away everything in my life, at the bottom of everything I found a foundation of Hope. I’m so glad I did, because the alternative would have been Despair. This made me curious to ask… Where does Hope comes from? Why do I have Hope? Why don’t some people have it? How can we cultivate Hope in our communities? This episode of the Davo Show is also an entry to The Growth Base, my project that covers short descriptions and examples of personal growth terms. This will be my first post on Hope, and I hope (ha, ha) to post more. Hope is not a simple topic. But I look forward to digging in and doing some work to learn more. I am back in the backyard and it’s nighttime. [0:25] I don’t think you can tell that because, well, I can tell. Obviously I’m out here, but, it’s super quiet. In the daytime it’s so much louder because the cars, the blowers, the jet engines, you know, it’s just a lot more going on in the daytime. It’s unusually quiet because it’s not the depth of summer and the insects haven’t really ramped up yet. I came out expecting to hear them and then I realized they’re just not really in force yet. Oh, but they will be. Just you wait. But I’m here to talk about hope. And quick story, I went to Wake Forest University to see my nephew graduate and during the baccalaureate service, which is the little shorter, much shorter spiritual service the day before. They have a few speakers and there was a speaker, a black woman, who was the first black female Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Colorado. [1:49] Her name is Kimberly Lucas, and she just gave a really great address. She talked about hope in part of the address and just how important that is. It made me remember how in my 20s, I was really going through a lot, figuring out life. And when I was 11 years old, my dad died, which of course was really tough, being a kid and having your parent die as a major. And then my best friend died of suicide when I was 21. And so during my 20s, I was doing a lot of processing. And during that time, after a time of intense processing, drawing, thinking, meditating, and just trying to figure it all out, this idea of hope really just kind of filtered out. Meaning, I realized that kind of hope, when you strip away everything else, all you’ve got is hope. And thank God I did, because without it, there would just be despair. [3:10] And I think, you know, too many people don’t have hope. They give up. And so I’m really, I wanted to just kind of start thinking more about hope. I know that I have hope, but I don’t know where it comes from. I know it comes from my worldview, which is how I understand the world. It has to do with spirituality and the way I was raised to understand life. Not everybody’s raised the same way.But I think hope is an essential human thing. [3:49] I don’t even know what to call it. It’s not an emotion. It’s an essential part of being human. So I want to think more about what hope is. It’s so foundational. I know it undergirds everything of my being. So the speech that Lucas gave was about how if we don’t have hope, then we won’t try to change anything. So since this project is about personal growth and trying to change your life for the the better, I need to have a better understanding of what hope is. So I’m going to start that journey of understanding it cognitively a little bit better. I think I understand it deeply within my being, but I don’t understand it quite in my head. [4:35] And I think that’ll be a fruitful exercise to do that. So this is the first installment of my curiosity journey into hope. So I really encourage you to check out that recording that I posted on my website from Kimberly Lucas. It’s really great. It is a spiritual thing. She’s an Episcopal bishop, but it is delivered in a way that is just so powerful. And if you’re not a Christian, if you’re not religious at all, I think you’ll find great meaning in it because she really delivers it for everybody. So I’d be curious to know what you think about it and hope that it is meaningful to you as well. So this is David Bourne. You can find out more at DavidBourne.com. Hope to see you all out there. Thanks for listening. Shaking Off Old Beliefs – DavoShow015

Episode 015 of the Davo Show If you want to grow personally, you’ve got to work at it. As I said earlier many times, it’s Drip by Drip that an ocean fills. Belief also plays a huge part. For me, it’s constantly accepting that I’m full of limiting beliefs that hold me back. It’s a little hard to accept, but there are parts of us that want to keep playing small. These parts mean well, but in the end they will kill our spirits if we let them. For example, I had a very full day of errands and travel and sending a daughter off to senior prom. I kept meaning to send this podcast but I kept putting it off. It’s now 11:00pm and I want to go to sleep in the hotel room and call it a day. But screw that. I’m shipping this episode now because that old limiting belief that says “you can’t do what you said you would” is not winning tonight. What have you been putting off? How do you stay small? What’s your most persistent limiting belief? What are you doing to change that? One more thing If you want to really grow, don’t beat yourself up over these things. Compassion and forgiveness are much more powerful than self criticism. Always. So shake it off. Get it done. And become the person you want to be. That’s what I’m doing. Imperfectly, every time. It’s been a big day. Also prom day, work in the yard day, get packed day, drive to Winston day, think about your podcast all day long, plan to do it and then don’t do it until, what it’s 11 15 p.m. tired as hell ready, to go to bed but instead what am I doing walking in the parking lot of the. [0:52] Courtyard Marriott getting the podcast done because if we don’t change the way, we do things we’re going to keep doing things the way we always do them so make, it simpler, get it out there. That’s what I’ve done with the podcast. I’ve made it simpler, I’ve made it so. All I got to do is post a few words of text up to the, server, up to my WordPress page, then record this thing, send it to Auphonic, the awesome audio processing engine and it puts it where it needs to be. So I’m getting it done and limiting beliefs are not holding me back. So if personal growth is something that you have accepted as something that you want to do, then you’ve got to recognize that you are full of limiting beliefs. These, ideas that you tell yourself that you do things a certain way or you don’t do things a certain way or you know you just have these limitations and oh you. [2:07] Know I always wait to the last minute well I did wait to the last minute today and that’s okay because I’m getting this thing done because I’m making a difference so I hope that you will ask yourself what are your limiting beliefs, what’s holding you back. Raise your awareness about how you do things. And, super, super importantly, don’t beat yourself up. Just shake it off. Do the thing that you need to do. Make that forward momentum. Be compassionate with yourself. Forgive yourself. Because beating yourself up doesn’t help a damn bet. In fact, it just keeps in that negative loop. [2:56] So, I’m signing off, going to bed. I’m excited to get this done. I’m going to hit publish, make sure everything worked, and I’m pretty sure it will, because I spent about, oh, I don’t know, 20 hours this week working on this thing. So I’m pretty sure it will. So, I hope you have a great day, and check out things at DavidBourne.com. If you want to learn more about personal growth, I’m Coach David Bourne. The supreme importance of personal growth – DavoShow014

Episode 014 of the Davo Show The supreme importance of personal growth Working towards my Personal growth is the most important thing I do. My life has gotten better and better because I’ve tried to make it better. Drip by drip oceans fill Incremental change over time makes huge differences. How can we continue to grow, little by little, day by day so that we feel like we’re making progress? By taking lots of small actions on a regular basis. Progress is huge for us. When we feel like we’re making progress, we feel good about ourselves and we feel more positive attitudes towards everything. When we feel like we’re stuck, its hard and even depressing. But that depressing feeling is actually there for us to show us it’s time to change and grow. Making a switch from consumer to producer Creative growth is one of the reasons I am re-focusing on a daily podcast. It’s a simple way to get ideas out onto the world that can help make a difference in my life and other peoples lives. On that note, I hope you will stay tuned subscribe to the Davo show, check out the posts at davidbourne.com, and on all the socials so we can grow together. I’ll see you out there! [0:12] Yeah, it comes in stereo. See you say something over here Margaret. Hello, and now I turn, And you’re over there And it looks so cool. [0:27] No, it’s so fun being a nerd, Bye Marg. [0:38] My teenage daughter Margaret thinks that my new invention looks silly and she’s right. But I’ve got stereo. Stereo microphones so I can come out in the woods and listen to stuff like that. Birds in stereo up into trees which is awesome. So the Devo show which is what you’re listening to I call it experiments in ideas and sound and so, that’s what I’m doing experimenting with ideas and sound. Today’s topic is, personal growth and how important that is and how I hope that you are making it one of the most important things that you do, because if you do that, your life will change, I promise you. That is what’s happened to me. I’ve been on a personal growth kick for decades now, and it has made a world of difference to make incremental changes day by day, tweaking how I see the world, how I move through the world, how I create, how I engage with people, trying to tweak it bit by bit. [2:05] It’s partly why I’ve become a life coach. It’s one of the reasons why. Probably a big reason, because I believe in personal growth. I believe that if we focus on it, that we can really change our lives for the better and become our truest selves. Which gets me back to the dorky device that I’ve got on my head, which is a stereo recording apparatus. It’s just a couple of wireless mics attached to the rims of my reading glasses. I just came up with it a few seconds ago. I showed it to Margaret. She thought it was ridiculous, and it is. And that’s awesome. It is allowing me to be out here in the woods and hopefully capturing my voice as well as Some stereophonic… [3:01] So, I’m going to shoot this up to my podcast server and ask that you will subscribe and, stay tuned to this channel where we will be digging into more personal growth topics. Hopefully every day, if I can get my act together. See you out there. <!-- HIDDENmoveAndReplaceTHEEND ### 2DO: - Task1 - Task2 ### THEINSPIRATION - ### OUTLINE - ### SHORTDESCRIPTION - ### HEADLINEIDEAS - TITLE: START DATE: 2023-05-12 Fri PUBLISHED DATE: ddate PROMOTED: ddate PROOFED: ddate SITELINK: https://davidbourne.com/ MP3LINK: CATEGORY: KEYWORDS: podcast, creativity, life coaching, ### CHECKLIST __ Title __ Pod file connected via PowerPress plugin, __ [powerpress] in place __ Image correct __ Has internal links __ Links Checked __ CTA __ Hidden Cleaned Up __ Socials Checked __ Post link to master link file. Connecting More Often and Faster Through Short Podcasting

Connecting More Often and Faster Through Short Podcasting I’m rebooting my short form podcast, The Davo Show with some new back-end improvements to make things better and faster. The end goal is connecting more often and more deeply with nature with exploration, but especially with the inner exploration of the human heart and mind. (This is what coaching with me is all about, by the way.) How Are You Connecting More Deeply, Inside And Out? Are you traveling soon? Where are you going? Why are you going? What are you looking for? What are you trying to leave behind? We travel to find new frontiers in the outer world, Because we’re looking for new frontiers on the inside. Having a greater awareness of the inner journey allows us to make changes that are better, faster, and more ultimately meaningful. That’s what the Davo Show and everything I do here at DavidBourne.com is all about. So I hope you stay tuned! Show Notes The pileated woodpecker – one of my next-door neighbors in the woods. Auphonic – The Amazing web audio processing engine that saves me at least an hour per episode. Blubrry – My new podcast host that saves me 3 step because Auphonic can send my MP3 files to it. PowerPress – A WordPress plugin that helps people find you, not your podcast host. Sitting in my backyard. So you're going to hear some birds. Probably some tire sounds on the new the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, maybe an airplane. Maybe some wings. Like I heard earlier today. I walked out into the forest that's right next to my backyard and immediately heard the flapping of some large wings. And then I saw it. The red head, pointed beak, the big black bird the pileated woodpecker. I had disturbed it. And it flew off maybe about 30 yards away, landed in an oak tree and gave me that laugh. You ever heard that laugh? The pileated woodpecker laugh. It's pretty cool. So this recording is going to be the recording that I post to Episode 13 of the Davao show, which is my freeform podcast that I often create in my backyard, or wherever I am out and about, if something happens, I see something here something feels something thinks something, then the idea is that the short form podcast is there for me to record it, send it to the server to send my text update to my website, publish it, and hopefully within half an hour, if I've done my job, right, that thing is out there in the world. And so this recording, actually that I'm making this episode 13 is going to be the proxy, which is the standard in file that I'm going to put up there on the server for all these episodes. So they're all going to point to this episode. The first one will be episode 13. The next one, I will rename it episode 14 1516 etc. And I'm gonna go ahead and make those connections to these draft webpages. So that when I make the new recording, and I give it the the number like so this one's 13. So the next time I do this, that's going to be the real test, when I'm going to call it Episode 14, and it's gonna go up to the server and replace it with the new recording. And then I'm going to take draft number 14 draft WordPress post number 14, Episode 14, and I'm going to edit it and then it's going to hopefully, if it works as the way I think it's going to, it's going to publish that new file. You don't need to know all this unless you're wanting to do this. And what I've decided to do is make a longer recording. I meant three minutes and 12 minutes, seconds, three minutes and 15 seconds now make a longer recording because this proxies need to be kind of long. That's a technical detail I won't go into but I'm going for about five and a half minutes. But that's the idea. So I'm recording this on iPhone in an app called off phonic. Of phonic is the audio software that lives on a server somewhere in Germany I believe. So after I stopped this recording, I will rename the file to Episode 13 send it up to all phonic where it gets processed. Several things happen there in all phonic. That's where so much of this automation comes in, I will add a photograph to the audio file, the mp3 file that is downloaded on your device that will be text. That will be what else? Some data that's associated with it. There will be a transcript. Although I can't get that part to work very well. I'll be working on that. There will be what else that's about it. Audio, photograph, text. Some links hold that stuff will be embedded into that mp3 file. And I'll find it does all that. That's the beauty of it. That's what really makes all this automation work. All phonic is all Somebody get two hours for free a month. It's amazing. And then you can pay for more if you're doing longer podcasts. It's perfect for the short form for me. Because I can experiment like crazy and not even have to pay for it. But I will be giving them some money because they're awesome. So all phonic then shoots the file in their immense ability, they shoot the file over to my podcast server. Now that's what I spent about eight hours yesterday setting up. So that server will then connect it to that WordPress document. This is not making any sense to you if you don't kind of have an idea of how this stuff works. So I'll eventually make a video about this. But my proxy time is about over. So I'm going to end this recording, and then shoot it up to the server. So thanks for listening, and there'll be more coming. Thanks for listening to this episode of the Davao show. You can find more at David bourne.com. That's spelled Bo u r any hope to see you there. Cheers. ### THEINSPIRATION - rebooting the short form podcast, testing systems, automating, making it even more efficient so that I can come out here I’ll be out record something and have it go where it’s supposed to go. ### OUTLINE - Tweaking the back in systems to make the short form podcast even easier - 10 or 12 hours in the last two days - Why do all the work, because it’s gonna be worth it to have things automated so I only have to write a title a description, a few links to some relative posts on my site or elsewhere, and then the podcast itself - so what am I gonna talk about? The Echo of Wildness – The Davo Show 012

A Podcast Inspired by a Connection to the Wild Geese Call Recently in my backyard, I caught an old familiar sound of some wild Canada Geese flying by. I was inspired to reflect on what that sound meant to me and how we can become more aware of our connections to meaningful things. Later that day, I wrote a poem to explore the idea further. The Echo of Wildness – Poem That echo. Yes, I know it. Yes! Yes! Wild geese! Reaching, Reaching, Back, Deep. Into memory. Into association. Resonating Echoing Reminding Connecting sound to heart. Then to now. I stop, and listen. And reverberate. Then they fade; echo and memory. And I’m left humming in wonder. Wondering what am I doing with my wild and precious life? Further Inspiration The last line of that poem was inspired by the poem “The Summer Day” by one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver. My Question for Martha Beck – Where are We all Going?

In Darkness Our Leaders Must Point to The Light This week is the last week before Winter Solstice. So the days are short and the nights are long. People need reminding that the light is going to come. That’s why I recently asked my head life coaching instructor, Martha Beck to answer these questions. Questions for Martha Beck: To Where are We all Going Dear Martha, Thank you for the space you give. Limitless. How do we, In these days of darkening Winter, Find the Light Of What is to Come? What Great Unfathomable Thing Are we trying to do together? Things feel so dark sometimes, Though there are many glimmers. To What do we Truly Belong? To What are we finding our Way? Gratefully! A Voice in the Woods

Are you taking the time to look within? I am, and it’s working. Inspired by the Landscape Before Me Last night, as the sun was setting, I made this short recording in my backyard. As I was thinking about all the creatures and celestial wonders I have seen and heard in my yard, I realized they were not the only things that I have found there. Uncovering My Future in The Forest The most important thing I have found is an idea. The idea that there is something big that I am meant to do with my life. Nature has inspired me to look deep within and find out what that is. I talk about that in this 5 minute episode. How About You? What’s going on in your backyard? Are you taking the time to find it? I hope so. What Is The Davo Show? Needing Connection Proves We are Disconnected – TDS

Why Do We Need Nature Connection? Because we are deeply disconnected. I go to the woods on a regular basis to connect by listening, recording, and to practice the present moment. I talked about the challenges of that a few days ago in another Davo Show episode. But why do we need connection in the first place? Does it mean we are disconnected? Yes. For sure. For thousands of years our ancestors were deeply connected to nature. Because we usually not very connected to nature, we are suffering from a lack of feeling and meaning we could get from being outdoors more. How A Goldfinch Interruption Proves the Point There is a moment in the recording where I spot a goldfinch in a nearby tree. Listen to how my voice changes and feel how excited it gets me. This is connection in its purest form. You can’t fake that. The good news is we don’t have to be disconnected. You can change it. Just go out your door. Links I mention the iNaturalist app when I saw the tree the goldfinch was in and realized I did not recognize the species. iNaturalist is a great tool for leaning more about the natural world. If you go there look for me at username davidbbourne. I don’t usually record here and I’m realizing that very high pitched insect sound you’re hearing definitely loudest in this section. So I’m thinking, you know, that’s, that’s a summer sound, when the freeze comes, that sounds probably going to go away. And I’m standing next to a maple that still got a lot of green on it, but it’s got a few leaves that are on the ground next to it. And I’ve just been thinking a lot about fall in the leaves coming down. On Connection And I think I’ve been thinking too about connection. I mentioned that a few weeks ago about why I go to the woods to be connected and you know, just these leaves changing, it’s made me think more about cycles. Of course, here we are, in the beginning of the fall cycle and looking out and seeing the leaves change every day. And this is just gorgeous. So I’ve been thinking about that cycle a lot. And thinking how, you know, why do I feel a need to connect and a big reason is because I’m so disconnected. We Are Culturally Disconnected I think we as a culture are disconnected. We’re disconnected from our roots of being out in nature all the time. Pretty much I’m not saying that’s what I think we should do. But I think there is a disconnect from where we are now in modern times, and what we used to have when we were more connected to plants to seasons to the cycles of change And so when I think about these leaves and how they fall on the ground and become this layer, and I’m not walking right now but lots of times when I am walking you can hear me crunch those leaves and so I you know, I’ve been thinking about …. The Goldfinch Distraction Oh, there’s a bird really close to me. I think it’s a finch. I doubt he’s gonna talk what is that? That’s not a Finch was a Goldfinch. Yeah, cool. It’s about 10 feet away in this Holly tree, I guess you know, I don’t know what that is. I will look it up on iNaturalist. I digress. So that was almost literally a squirrel moment or just a bird moment. That’s all right. Proof Of Connection – The Goldfinch That’s why I’m coming out here to connect with things like that tree I don’t know the name of with the really bright red berries. That Goldfinch was trying to eat until it saw me and flew away. So yeah, that layer of leaves on the ground, you know, it. It’s, it’s like an insulation for all the creatures that live on the forest floor. And, you know, it’s their home. And it’s so many things, these leaves that we really only pay attention to twice a year, spring and fall. They make up so much of the ecology of the forest. Wanting More Connection Because it Feels Good I want to think more about that and learn more about that. And be connected to that because, you know, I think it’s good to reconnect with nature to understand it better. Just because we are disconnected. We used to be as a species, we human beings were so connected. And I think now that we have nice homes that we live in. We’ve just lost that so we can get it back. My going outdoors and paying attention. That’s what I’m doing. I’m kind of figuring this out as I go telling myself thinking about connection, disconnection, the leaves, how it all ties together, because it does. It’s all cyclical. More to Come on The Davo Show You’re going to hear more about all that kind of stuff on the Davo Show, which is my short form, audio show. This one’s not so short. So sorry about that. Maybe if I did them more often they would be a little bit shorter. That’s the goal. Until next time, see you out there. How The Pandemic Finally Got Me Making Music

This Past Winter Called for Music February of 2021 was a dark time. We were all confused and tired. The Covid-19 pandemic had taken it’s toll. I needed some light in my life. Music making became a necessary distraction, for me. I pulled out an old Midi Keyboard, plugged it into the USB port of my computer, and starting tweaking buttons in Apple’s Logic Pro. Pretty soon I was making something that resembled music. I’m still making that music today. The keyboard/computer system is always setup and ready to go. All I have to do is hit record, play the keyboard, and tweak a few buttons. The Davo Show is About Experiments In this episode, I walk you through my music making process. And believe me. Every bit of it is an experiment! I hope you enjoy this rundown, but I really hope you go out of your comfort zone and make something creative and new of your own. Connection and the Great Wild Word Series

Why I Keep Coming to the Woods In a word…Connection. I come to the woods to connect to the natural world. To learn about species. To see the changes of the seasons. To see the beauty and feel the wildness. The Great Wild Word Series Begins In this experimental audio space I call The Davo Show, I intend to try things and see what sticks. It’s risky because I’m going to screw up in public. That’s OK. Everybody screws up. It’s how we keep growing. What Is This Short Audio Series About? – Creativity – Nature – Discovery – Living your best life – “Experiments In Ideas and Sounds” You can find all of the Davo Show Episodes at http://DavidBourne.com/davo/ Subscribe to this Show at Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Overcast A Lightly Edited Episode Transcript It’s Twilight. There’s just a little bit of sun in the canopy of the forest. You can hear the wet tires on the pavement nearby. That’s the parkway that’s close to these woods. I hear a dog or maybe he hears me and maybe that’s why he’s barking. The cars are commuters. They use this section on the parkway. I’m one of them. So I’m not complaining. Though, I have to admit when I’m recording and rather hear the woods. I do hear summer insects. So crickets, I hear some industrial sounds from the nearby shopping centers and houses. Lots of lots of tires. This is a busy time of day people are going home from work. It’s seven o’clock (pm). It’s not as quiet as I thought it might be But that’s okay. I’m still out here in the woods. It’s been raining all day. Every once in a while when the wind blows, you get a little bit of a downpour from the moisture that’s still on the leaves. And there are a lot of leaves this time of year. Most of them are not falling yet. In fact, most of them are still green. There’s a few species that are starting to turn. poplars looks like maybe a beech. Why I Come Out Here Man, I quite I don’t know what that is. And it looks like an oak. But that’s one of the reasons I’m out here. Because I don’t know what all the species are. So I come out here to learn and to get a little bit more connected. And that word connected. That’s really what I’ve been thinking about when I think about the woods. Because I keep asking myself why do you keep wanting to go out in the woods and talk to your recorder. It’s kind of an odd thing to do. Sometimes I think but I know what it is. I want to come out and feel the raindrops. Hear the wind. I want to get connected to this forest to the natural world on a daily basis because I spend way too much time indoors and I crave coming out here and I’m curious about that. And I think a lot of people have similar cravings and we just want to be connected. Even those, even though that means having to listen to a bunch of cars go by sometimes. So I’m just gonna keep walking. A couple of trees came down in the last storm and so there’s lots of sticks on the ground. My shoes are break In the branches as I walk over them, some days, forest is quiet. Some days, it’s not so quiet, I’m scrambling over a big log that’s about three and a half, four feet off the ground, too big oak just lost its footing. And what’s interesting is two other trees right beside it, that fell over in the opposite direction. Which is weird, but these things happen. I come out here to learn I come out here for a deeper reason that I really don’t quite understand. But I think it has to do with that word connection has to do with somehow being centered. Just getting closer to something so simple and pure as a forest, though, I immediately immediately when I say that I know it’s not simple at all. Forests are extremely complicated. Extremely diverse, especially the older they are. And I don’t know how this forest is, but it’s in mountains that are really, really old. So there’s a lot of species diversity. There’s a lot of animals that are still here. A lot of the animals are making comebacks Like the black bear. I’ve seen him in this woods. Coyotes are showing up, more and more Bobcat are being spotted. More and more. In this area. Wild turkeys are making comeback. Canada geese seem to be making a comeback. I sure see a lot more of them than I used to when I was a kid. That leads me to think of osprey and other hawks, Eagles are here now, which is great. I just want to be out here more And the other reason I’m doing this and talking about this today is I want to recommit to getting out here more in the woods, it’s fall, which means it’s going to start getting colder, which means I’m going to be more and more reluctant to be in the woods. Having a reason will be helpful So that’s what I’m doing. I think I’ll call it The Great Wild Word. Today’s word is connection. We feel a lot more connected after taking a short stroll. As I thought I might. Here’s the rain again. Unwanted Sound Advice – The Davo Show

Is It Frustration or Discovery? You never know what you are going to get when you record audio outdoors. I’ve learned to accept this challenge and to go with the flow of what’s happening. Otherwise, I’m constantly frustrated with “unwanted” sounds. In today’s example, I went out to record some crows I was hearing and tell a story about them. But they disappeared. No Crows No Crow Story. No Biggie. Returning to the Davo Show’s Short Form I keep coming back to this short form audio project because I love being outdoors, and I love to listen to what it has to tell me. And I apparently love this problem of trying to record one things then having something else happen. Is this the magic of the moment? Maybe. Or maybe it’s just a part of learning to love what is vs what I want it to be. What Is This Short Audio Series About? – Creativity – Nature – Discovery – Living your best life You can find all of the episodes on my website here. Stay tuned for subscription details. It’s in the works. These things take time, you know. Episode Transcript You have found the Davo Show: experiments in ideas and sound. I’m in my backyard. It’s about 9am. And I’m looking at a gorgeous tree. I think it’s sourwood. It’s got orange leaves against the green backdrop of this magnificent forest that I get to look at every day. Every day that I’m home, I’m back here on the back deck. It’s where I sit and “cipher”. Which means think about stuff. It’s where I meditate, where I hang out with Birdy the dog, and sometimes with friends. But this morning, I’m thinking about the crow that was hanging out over on the right and I was hoping to get some audio of that crow and of course, as crow’s do, he’s not cooperating and he has stopped his raucus cawing. I do hear, of course, road sounds. That’s the nearby Parkway. Tires. Spinning on pavement. The whirr is pretty constant. But that’s okay. And I’m thinking about the hawk. It was in the sourwood. That took flight. Just as I opened the door earlier this morning. I spooked him off the branch. We see lots of hawks around here but it’s not very common that they’re hanging out on a on a tree in our yard. There’s the neighbor’s dog. Lulu. You probably can’t hear it. But I hear the beep beep beep beep of a truck that’s pretty constant to hear a truck backing up or a tractor and that’s okay. I have learned that when I listen for sounds and sit back here on the back deck, I can try to fight something or will something to stop or to start. But none of that willing really helps me much. It’s much more fun and interesting to (simply) listen. The New Call of an Old Bird

Figuring Out What I Know and Don’t Know About Wildlife What’s This Series About? – A short-form audio series – It’s about creativity, nature, and living your best life. – Experiments in Ideas and Sound Robins and Shotgun (Mics) Transcript So this Robin is about 20 feet from me. I think he sees me but he probably sees a worm in the grass too. So again, this is a Robin, super common is about 20 feet away on the grass. It’s twilight. He is looking for dinner. Oh, he found a worm. I knew he was looking for something. He found an earthworm. Good for him. So like I said Robin’s are super common. And off it goes. That was cool. So yeah, the robin is one of those birds I have been able to identify for a long time. Sorry, my volume is a little loud there. I’ve been able to identify them for a long time, but not the call. And so that was cool. It’s not super distinctive. I guarantee you I have heard that call before. But I couldn’t tell you that I had which is interesting. You know, it’s funny how some calls are distinctive. Other ones are not least to me, I’m sure they’re very distinct to the Robins and maybe to you or maybe to other birders but now that I have recorded it, I will be able to remember it. I hope so. By the way, I’m in my backyard again. And I’m recording with really my best recorder it’s called a Sound Devices Mixpre and it’s got really good preamps which are the little amplifiers that amplify the microphone. And last night, if you happen to hear yesterday’s recording, I was recording in stereo. Tonight I’m only recording and mono because I got lazy so it sounds a little bit different. But I’m using a shotgun mic which really makes it makes it makes me able to get better sound get more they call it a shotgun because it has a very narrow field that it picks up. So I hope to be using it a lot more because it really does make a difference. Alright, so I’m going to sign off again. I think this is day five for the podcast, the daily DavoShow my experiments and thought and sound mostly been talking about birds because it is springtime and they’ve been a lot of birds and it’s just something easy to talk about. And I’m learning bird calls and learning all the birds in my yard and really got me thinking, well, I want to learn all the species in my yard. And I know that’s impossible. But I sure can learn a lot of them. So I’m going to be more intentional about that and pass along some of that information. So you can learn more at DavidBourne.com/davo/ for this short form audio show that so far have been pretty regular. So I’m pretty happy about that. And thanks to this Robin, sounds like I’m going to get one out today as well. So hope you’ll stay tuned. You can find it where you find all your podcasts. At least pretty soon. Walking in the Woods in Winter, Thinking about Listening

Being Present Outdoors is the Greatest Gift. Use it. Here’s a recording I made a few weeks ago when I was testing this new short-form podcast. I made several new recordings today, but editing them and getting them published will have to wait. This one is done, so here it is! It’s transcribed by the awesome Otter App Where I Am So it’s about 6:15 PM, late January, and it’s pretty cold. The sun has set, and I’m walking in the woods. There is a lot of leaf litter on the ground, some oaks, some pine needles. And I’m experimenting with [recording] some natural sound. I hear the cars go by, you might hear the [nearby] dog. There’s always something to listen for out here. And that’s a good thing. On Listening and Not Listening in the Woods So I see people running on the trails around here. And oftentimes, they have in their earbuds, which I get, you know. I have a lot of interest in listening to books and podcasts and music. But when I’m out in the woods, I do not want to hear that stuff. I want to be in the woods. I want to listen, I want to think. I want to not think. I just want to take it in. So I’m going to start walking again. And if I hear something cool, stop and record it. But the coolest thing is that I’m out here and that it’s gorgeous. I see lots of trees, species that I love. And so many things that I don’t know the names of, and I want to learn the names and just get more familiar with them. Loving the Sourwood Trees Right now I’m looking at one of my favorites. That’s right in front of me this big sourwood it’s got a bark that’s very similar to one of my favorite trees that I saw growing up outside my house, the live oak, but live oaks don’t live here. So when I saw this bark when I first moved to these mountains, I thought “Oh, that’s so cool!” So here it is. So, the sourwood maybe I’ll talk more about that one later. For now. I’ll sign off. Welcome to My New Daily Series I’m experimenting with a new short daily podcast. You can find all of them on my website here. I Thought it Was An Owl But Alas No

This Bird Call Sounds Like an Owl But it’s Not What’s This Series About? – A short-form audio series – It’s about creativity, nature, and living your best life. – Get it where you get your podcast and at the bottom of the show notes page. I live in the Kituwa Bioregion near Asheville, NC, USA, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Transcript to the Episode Hey, folks. It’s David Bourne. And I’m walking outside. Because I hear a bird. (Sorry, that may have been too loud.) I hear a bird that I want you to hear. I’m hoping I can get it. Did you hear that? [A faint bird call is heard.] It went who-ooo-ooo-ooo. So, my story about that sound is that I used to think that was an owl because it, you know, sounds like an owl, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not an owl. Some of you may know what it is. It’s very common. The bird’s cousin is one of the most common birds we see downtown in big cities. They’re dark. A lot of people think they’re dirty. Because they live downtown. Oh, there it goes. I scared it off. Another cool sound that it made whenever it flew off. It was kind of a twittering that its wings make, I guess? I don’t know if it’s the wings. Or maybe it’s coming out of its vocal cords. But I’m pretty sure it’s just wings. It’s a cousin to that big downtown bird. Which is a rock dove also known as…Do you know it? A pigeon. Cousin to the rock dove, the bird that we just heard that said, who-ooo-ooo-ooo. It is a mourning dove, m-o-u-r-n-i-n-g. And I used to think it was an owl. And I would get so excited because ” There is an owl in the yard! I just can’t see it.” Well, it was a very, very common not so exciting mourning dove. So I hope you could hear that. And I’m going to play this back and see if you can. Hopefully, this isn’t too loud. I’m trying a new technique. I’ll take a picture of it. Nice, I’ll try to get my iPad to do it or something. I’m using my iPhone attached to a recorder that’s called a zoom h1 handy recorder. It’s like 100 bucks. And I just love it. It’s a stereo recorder with a decent mic, adjustable volume, and better than a phone. And it’ll do all kinds of stuff. But one thing that I recently learned is that you can plug it in through a USB adapter to your phone. So this way, I can shoot this file directly to my audio processing service (Auphonic). And that’ll send it hopefully automatically. We’ll see if I set it up, right. That’ll send it to my podcast server. So we’re going to try that. So hopefully that’ll work. That’s why I’m doing this Daily Show. Short, quick audio programs so that I can learn. It gets me outside gets me thinking and talking about nature, which is a subject I dearly, dearly love and it gets me using the technology that I also dearly, dearly love, so I hope you’re enjoying this. It’s Nice to Be Excited by Such Small Things

The Day I Learned the Call of a Very Familiar Bird This is a short-form audio series about creativity, nature, and living your best life. Get it where you get your podcast and at the bottom of the show notes page. Pre-pre-pre. That’s what the tufted titmouse says. Pre-pre-pre! (Who knew!?) I’m hoping he’ll do it again. He’s over by the feeder. And that is a new call for a not new bird, meaning I know this bird very well because he is the first at the feeder the boldest the most local of the yard. The tufted titmouse and the Carolina Chickadee are good buddies and they are always around. That is the first time I’ve noticed a titmouse calling and it said pre-pre-pre. I heard it and I thought wow I’ve never heard that before. I’m hoping he’ll do it again. A crow. Also a local. I am recording with my phone, my iPhone, which doesn’t work that well frankly, but it’s the only thing I’ve got. So I’m hoping to just capture that titmouse call. I’m sitting in my backyard. I was planning to meditate but then a bluebird came by and the bluebirds are new to us. They’ve probably been here all along we haven’t noticed them except for this spring, so they are a welcome addition. But of course the titmouse and the chickadee, they are regulars so it’s fun to hear that call. I’ll catch it again. I probably won’t get it now. He’s already flown away. It’s nice to be excited by such small things! Welcome to My New Daily Series I’m experimenting with a new short daily podcast. You can find all of them on my website here. The Davo Show Starts Again

Doing it Daily is the Best Way to Get it Wired I like to learn. Don’t You? So how do you learn best? Practice. Focus. Repetition. Begin Again. And again. Make lots of mistakes. And move on to the next thing. Don’t make it too precious. Don’t focus on outcomes. Just do it. Reflect on it, realize what new Truth you find, and begin again. It’s a cycle. I call it the “Re-Creation Cycle” because we create again and again. The Daily Davo Show is Back After many fits and starts, I’m recommitting to publishing a short audio show daily. I’m making a daily podcast. To learn a lot fast. And to get myself outside and exploring. Experiencing Nature is one of my greatest joys, so I’m putting two great things together. I’m also telling more stories about how we can make a bigger difference in the world and live lives of greater meaning. Do You Want to Learn More About Audio Storytelling? I’ll be talking about tech and storytelling techniques and giving tips along the way. Tune in and learn a little bit every day. Let’s Ship This!
