Psychologist Abraham Maslow, on his hierarchy of needs, puts "belonging" about mid-pyramid, third in importance. Jesus might have argued, and moved it down to the very bottom of the pyramid, the place of our foremost foundational need. Jesus understood our need to belong because he created it, and he was not shy with either his claims about where we belong or his relentless pursuit of getting us there.
