I Was at Ground Zero... The Taste of Death Still Haunts me 25 Years Later

from Stinchfield with Grant Stinchfield · host Grant Stinchfield

Twenty-five years ago, America changed forever. September 11, 2001. I was there. I was one of the first reporters to reach Ground Zero, and there are things from that day that will never leave me. The chalk-like debris that filled the air and coated my mouth. I could taste it for nearly two weeks. It was the taste of death. I remember the faces. The shock. The fear. The look of terror in people's eyes that I pray I never see again. Nearly 3,000 innocent people were murdered that day by Islamic terrorists. They attacked our buildings, our people and our way of life. But 9/11 was also a catastrophic failure of government. Warning signs were missed. Intelligence wasn't connected. Bureaucracies failed. And Americans paid for those failures with their lives. Twenty-five years later, we owe those victims more than ceremonies and moments of silence. We owe them the truth. We owe them vigilance. And we owe them the courage to ask the question that matters most: Are we safer today? My fear is that we are not. On this 25th anniversary of September 11th, I take you back to Ground Zero, to what I witnessed firsthand, what America learned and what America may have forgotten. We said never again. The question is whether we actually meant it.
