from The Main Character Experience™ Podcast · host Kala C. Simmons, MSW | Identity & Confidence Strategist
Send us Fan MailBeing passed over for a promotion hurts.Even when you know your worth. Even when you're confident. Even when you spend your days reminding other women to trust themselves, take up space, and stop waiting for permission.I know because I was passed over for a promotion, and it knocked the wind out of me.I had prepared for the interview. I had years of experience with the agency. I knew I was capable of doing the job. And when I heard, “We went with someone else,” my ego wasn't the only thing that got bruised. For a few hours, I let rejection get very loud.My inner mean girl showed up with receipts, questioning my competence, my ambition, and whether I had been foolish to believe I was actually good enough. But underneath the disappointment was something even harder to admit:I was angry with myself because I realized I had started waiting to be chosen again.I had put parts of my life and business on pause while waiting to see whether someone else would give me the opportunity I wanted. And that realization became the beginning of me coming back to myself. In this episode of The Main Character Experience, I'm getting real about what it looks like to experience rejection when you're the woman who teaches confidence and self-trust for a living. We're talking about:What it actually feels like to be passed over for a promotionWhy rejection can hit harder when you've worked incredibly hard for an opportunityThe connection between rejection, self-worth, perfectionism, and people-pleasingHow being overlooked can trigger the belief that you're not good enoughWhy someone else's decision is information—not a verdict on your worthWhat to do when rejection makes you question your competenceThe danger of putting your life, business, or dreams on hold while waiting to be chosenHow to remember who you are outside of your job title, career, relationship, or other people's opinionsWhy you don't need everyone to recognize your valueWhen rejection is an invitation to change direction—or build your own tableWhat it really means to choose yourself after disappointmentBecause here's what I'm learning:Someone else's “no” does not automatically mean you're not enough.Sometimes it means the timing isn't right.Sometimes it means the opportunity wasn't yours.Sometimes it means you need to change direction. And sometimes?Sometimes it means it's time to build your own damn table. But you don't get to let somebody else's decision write the story of who you are.You can be disappointed and still know your worth. You can cry and still trust yourself. You can be passed over and still refuse to abandon yourself.Because you don't need everybody to choose you.You need to choose yourself. And that's exactly where I'm at now.I'm not waiting for permission to become the woman I already know I'm capable of being.I'm back building, laughing, growing, creating, taking up space—and embracing the messy middle of becoming the woman I'm meant to be.Because this is what it looks like to actually live the work. Not perfection. Not pretending rejection doesn't hurt. Not having everything figured out.The messy middle. The plot twists. The uncomfortable transitions. The moments when you know you're becoming—but you're still figuring out how to become her.Welcome to The Main Character Experience. This chapter is going to be a wild one.Don't hand someone else the pen and let them write your identity based on their opinion of you.You can be overlooked without being less valuable. You can be rejected without being rejected as a person. And you can walk away from a closed door without deciding that you don't deserve to enter another one.Choose yourself. Then keep going.🎬 💥 KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING, GORGEOUSEnjoyed this episode of The Main Character Experience?
