Now Starlink wants forty two thousand satellites, China is planning two hundred thousand, and Amazon and Europe are both building their own constellations on top of sixty years of existing space junk. The risk is a debris field dense enough that it could make launching anything too dangerous for decades, threatening weather satellites, space stations, and the ability to study the universe at all.
