I'd rather not have known

from John Dyhouse · host John Dyhouse

I still seem to be involved with emotions, I did not mean to write this but lacking inspiration, I used what I call the "David Bowie" method. Also known as the "Cut-Up" method. When I need extra help with starting to write a lyric I have used this a number of times in the past few decades - not often - but it can be useful to write something different. Basically, it depends on discovering potential lines/phrases/words in a newspaper or magazine. Cut the found results out and sift and build a lyric. Of course these days there are online apps to do the cutting up, etc. I also allow the use of anything else (textual!) to complete a meaningful lyric. Anyway, I found a couple of titles, this one was chosen for no particular reason and starting building the lyric from the randomly (with a little thought) cut-up collection. I saw a TV interview with Bowie just after he had had a couple of hits, and he described this method when the interviewer asked where he got the ideas for his songs. I have occasionally used it since that time. It can work in difficult times!
