Ideas Are Bulletproof
from Between Bread and Stone · host Stephen R. Brewer, PsyD
The Ascension is often treated as a spatial puzzle, as though the point were to determine whether Jesus literally floated upward and where, precisely, the cloud went afterward. I think the angels are telling us to stop looking in that direction. The Ascension is about anti-capture. Rome killed Jesus publicly, violently, and thoroughly. Rome could not kill the way he embodied. Christ slips beyond the machinery of empire, and the movement becomes distributed through the community that will soon receive the Spirit. I call on the movie V for Vendetta carefully in this episode, not as an ethical model, but as a structural image. V’s methods are violent, and Jesus’ way is the opposite. Still, the line holds: beneath the body there is more than flesh. There is an idea. And ideas are bulletproof. The way of Christ is bulletproof. You are welcome here.
