Identity politics in architecture - Part 1

from Talk Architecture · host Naziaty

Send us Fan MailWhen a person identifies themself as an 'architect' even though they do not have a license or a professional qualification, it does not mean that they are confronting the status quo or wish to cause mischief to the profession. It depends on the country whether the architects are stable in terms of the 'playing field' and would not be monitoring or mindful of words used, as the legitimacy is only from a personal point of view (POV). A person identifies themself as an 'architect' "having stuck to the profession, adapted, and flexible in one's career in architecture for 40 years" since one identified very earlier in the second year of architecture school. In this episode, the mention of two issues implies the professional architects' grouses on issues of 'identity', that is: projects given to foreign architects and; clients opting for non-architects in small projects.  Hence, the concerns become a debate on hierarchical terms, legitimacy, and the use of the word 'architect' to identify oneself.©️Talk Architecture 2023, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob.  Photo credit: Paradox design thesis 2018-19 exhibition at Universiti Malaya: when X marks the spot.Support the showDo subscribe for premium content and special features which will help to support and sustain Talk Architecture podcast on a more in-depth explanation on design thesis and processes. Bauer, Florian Schneider, Axel Weber & Dr. Tillman Bardt The Newmorrow PodCast is more than a podcast — it's a platform for open dialog on the future of our business, a platform for those building what doesn’t exist yet. Here, we share and embrace our passion for the hospitality industry, but we won’t romanticize the journey. We ask the tough questions, confront uncomfortable truths, and prepare for a future that resists easy answers. We believe that the tougher and wilder times become, the more openly, honestly and humanely people need to talk to each other and act together. We believe, openness, togetherness, and truthfulness should also be cornerstones of a professional community to develop our utopian idea of „open source“. This is a space where visionaries don’t just imagine the future — they wrestle with the paradoxes that shape it: success vs. happiness, data vs. instinct, stability vs. reinvention. Join leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers as they share not what made them — but what’s actively shaping them, now and next. So tune in
