Idolatry and the Kingdom of Christ and God
from Heritage Pulpit · host Brandon Scalf
Idolatry is not merely an ancient relic of history past—it is a present and insidious danger that wages war against the soul. In Ephesians 5:3-5, Paul warns that sexual immorality, impurity, and greed are not merely sins but forms of idolatry that defile the believer and disqualify the unrepentant from the kingdom of Christ and God. True holiness demands that God's saints put to death every idolatrous attachment—whether it be lust, materialism, or self-exaltation—because to love, trust, or serve anything above God is to commit spiritual treason. The call to holiness is not optional; it is the evidence of true salvation, for those who persist in idolatry will have no inheritance in God's kingdom. Yet, the gospel is the great idol-smashing power, and through Christ, believers are called to renounce all rivals to His lordship, to live in grateful worship of the Giver rather than the gifts, and to walk as set-apart citizens of His coming kingdom.
