Idris's Story
from Blocked Britain · host Blocked Britain
Idris is 31 and lives in Tottenham, one of the most deprived constituencies in England. He wanted to train as a nurse and help his community access quality healthcare. But when he applied for nursing training, he discovered that Health Education England's budget had been capped by HM Treasury, limiting the number of training places available despite massive workforce shortages across London's NHS trusts. The training infrastructure existed. Qualified instructors were ready to teach. What was missing was a central government willing to fund the places needed to get healthcare workers onto wards that desperately need them. Instead, Westminster treated public investment in nurse training as a cost to be minimised rather than the means by which communities like Tottenham get the healthcare they deserve. This is his story of being blocked by Treasury spending limits that make no economic sense.
