If Hashem Only Gives Chochmah to Chachamim, How Do WE Get It? (Berachos 55a) Part 1

from Machshavah Lab · host Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! This morning (3/8/23), in lieu of a morning Mishlei shiur, we set out to answer a question posed by one of my talmidim to our Rosh ha'Yeshiva at the Purim seudah last night: How does one become a chacham? We identified three sources which talk about Step #1, and we decided to work on the most problematic one: "Ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu only gives chochmah to those who [already] have chochmah" (Berachos 55a). The question is: How are you supposed to get started? We developed several approaches from several sources, and we intend to continue working on this on Friday. -----מקורות:שמות לא:א-ורלב"ג - שמות לא:וברכות דף נה עמוד אדניאל ב:כ-כביפה תואר (הובא בעץ יוסף ד"ה אלא, הובא במתיבתא) שםיעב"ץ - אבות ג:יא (הובא במתיבתא)פרקי אברהם - אבות ד:א (הובא במתיבתא)מאירי - ברכות דף מ עמוד ארבינו יונה - אבות ד:א -----The Torah content for the rest of Adar has been sponsored by my friend and chavrusa Zack, with the following dedicatory message: When asked, "Who is a leader you greatly admire?" my grandfather z”l immediately comes to mind. Each person who entered his presence was brought closer to a better version of themselves. This was due to his staunch belief in people and his uncompromising values. Knowledge is similar — it is indiscriminate and uncompromising in its power to help us become our best selves. Thank you Rabbi Schneeweiss for spreading knowledge, and may the memory of my grandfather, Naftali ben Tzvi, be a blessing.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you!
