If the Air Bites Shrewdly, Sue the Air — Hamlet Act 1, Scene 4

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

The studio is set to an actively disrespectful temperature, and somehow we’re expected to be calm about Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 4, a scene where everyone is freezing, nobody has a coat, and a ghost communicates entirely through ominous gestures like a man who refuses to text back.Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus loiter on the ramparts while inside the castle Claudius is throwing a midnight rager complete with trumpets and cannon fire (noise pollution, but make it royal). Hamlet drags Denmark’s reputation, calls the drinking custom “more honour’d in the breach than the observance,” and then launches into an unsolicited TED Talk about human nature and the “dram of evil” while his friends slowly turn into ice sculptures. Then the Ghost shows up, fully armored, aggressively unannounced, and Hamlet immediately demands answers. The Ghost says absolutely nothing, beckons like it owns the place, and lures Hamlet toward a “more removed ground” (translation: darker, colder, worse lighting). Horatio tries to stop him, but Hamlet chooses chaos, breaks free, and follows the silent, clanking corpse into the night. We whine about:Claudius partying at midnight like sleep is optionalReputation anxiety, toxic vibes, and pointless monologues in the coldA ghost with zero manners and no verbal communication skillsHamlet’s lack of boundaries (“don’t follow every ghost that waves at you”)“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark” being the understatement of the centuryPour something properly chilled, cut the cheese, and remember: if the air bites shrewdly, sue the air.
