When parents are unhappy, fighting, dissociating from conflict, drinking, zoning out into their phones and so forth, the kids can run wild and become, in today's day and age, not neglected as much as over-validated and over-parented. When parents are unhappy with their marriages, they often overidentify with the kids, assuming they are unhappy when they may not be, and give them too much materially to compensate for this projected unhappiness. Also, parents who feel lonely romantically often overrely on their kids for love and are scared to set boundaries that would make the children not like them as much in the moment.
