Imagination Episode Part 1

from Live Forever · host English Literature Expert Dan and Christmas Boozer Brent

This week is the first two part episode. We start it off with Brent already deep in the glass. This first half is heavily concentrated on the hero's journey and the stories you know that follow the structure. Okay, real quick, this is definitely a plus episode. Danny Brent lived for extra long plus size. This is Dan Brent, the thick episode. This is Dan Brent Lane Bryant.

Dan Brent lived for everything. Because we're already an hour and a half. And I have talked for the first hour and Dan's talking for the second hour. Close your eyes.

Gosh, three. Make a wish. In the world of your imagination. I'm shy, I'm a teacher, so I know what's going on.

That was a company, Barney. Man, I'll tell you what, coming apart was a good time. Not gonna lie. Yeah, a little less awkward than I was at the office.

Yeah, 100% better than I was at the office. Couple plates of different nachos, couple plates of different dips. No solid food, just finger food. And hey, get whatever drinks you want.

That's what I'm talking about, for real? Yeah, they were down with that. That's what they did. Oh man, that's super illegal.

Should have came. How's that illegal? The liability is off the charts. That's why most company parties, they give you like drink tickets.

Because if someone gets an accident or somebody gets hurt, they can be like, we only give them two drinks. Well, by the time this comes out, we will know if someone got an accident and why we'll edit all this out. Damn, that would suck. But it was a good time.

No one, I mean, can't say no one got drunk. Hey, no, not home of me. I had like three dough stockies, two towels, one small. Those stockies?

Yeah, those cookies. Yeah, that's what I said. Those stockies. Listen, I've had three of them.

And like three shots of tequila and drink some of my wise electric lemonade. Ooh. Which I paid for the electric lemonade on my pocket because she's not part of the company. Here's something that they electric lemonade.

We asked them, they said vodka. I said, good enough for me. I don't know. Yeah.

It's blue. I'm guessing vodka tasted like maybe margarita mix and coca roe. What's not coca roe? Caraca.

Caraca. That's not right. Blue coverage. I don't know if that's obvious.

The blue stuff that's like grenadine, blue. Technically, it's alcoholic, but it's not alcoholic. Yeah, I think so. It's like grenadine.

Like, you can put grenadine in a virgin drink, but at the same time, it's technically alcohol. But is this not having alcohol at all? Grenadine, I'm not sure. Yeah, I'm kind of confused about the whole thing.

But anyways, it was a good time. I was like, like, Craig or somebody about that shit. I had a few drinks, but some of the guys from Florida. I found it on.

Yeah. Which cap there? Who? Cap?

Cap. First name? I don't know. Everybody calls him Cap.

Yeah, no, Cap was there. Yeah. Oh, he was good. Yeah.

Because like, Cap Daniel, the day I left. He was in the hospital. Was he? I didn't know this.

Yeah. He had some horrible sister, something on his head. Oh, no shit. And Craig was like, man, you OK?

He's like, I don't know. I don't feel so good. And then later on, your phone's ringing. Will.

Is it Will Wheaton? If it's Will Wheaton, answer the phone right now. Put on speaker. Tell me some podcast.

You send him a listen? No, no. All right, Will, you're on the podcast. How you doing?

What? Hey, buddy, what's up? Yeah, that was Brent. You're on the podcast right now.

We're going to 10, Brent, live forever. Yeah, you're on the mic. What's going on? I am not.

You are too. I'm serious. The speakerphone is right next to the mic. This is my brother, Will.

I'm going to say hello. That's your brother. And the picture downstairs. Yeah, picture downstairs.

We got your Christmas card, dude. You look good. Nice pictures, bro. My wife wanted to do photos.

And I was like, I'm not spending that kind of money because we do it every year. I said there's a monster in your closet. I ran. So what's up, dude?

Is this two awkward? Do you want me to call you later? I will. Hang on one second.

OK, hang on one second. He's breaking news. OK, go ahead. Will, I just use the restroom.

Sweet. One or two? Will, we've got to know that number one or number two. Don't say three.

He wouldn't be calling it was three, Dan. All right. He'd be making a sandwich. His number three?

Make him a sandwich. I'm all right, guys. Will, I got a sandwich. Yeah.

I just thought I just laughed at her teeth. Yeah, if I had a better ox gourd, I would just plug you straight into the recorder. But we have got to do this eventually. Because I'm already.

Yeah, it's a good time. super what now spoiler uh... you'll listen to the dark episode the guy i know happens to be my brother so well will update on the crazy stuff my brother is into one one question of professor x does the drummer and controls the drums with his brain go by drummer boy i'm a take those yes thank you will well i know because i said and i told you like uh... the late the guy knows mom is a physicist she's a college is he's like high school physics but would still probably blow our minds with how much knows yeah probably with a six-star yet because we're done with the stupid or you are talking about and i don't know the christmas great you should came yeah guy with assistance head yeah cap cap yes the yeah and then we had daniel you know daniel attend and you'll have a podcast on each list in sweet way to a certain right now josh you're not coming like you know he has like one year old so that's a time when i was like they're one they can say about themselves are all of that i mean jesus you can't be a little life uh...

there's a new guy from florida who's only working a couple months oh yeah i think i'm at that anyways don't care nor to him and daniel were both like and next time you're right for the florida like state or house sweet danish is like my wife would go but whatever it's like my life like her to and i was like a uh... i totally understand florida people just for my wife literally that's how i can great great is like family he feels like family because my wife's florida and i i just know how to deal with hard-headed florida people no offense great but no offense people that listen to the podcast it might also be a boss ask him if you ever listen he's like i didn't record podcast uh... i'm pretty sure the last movie that greaty soft because he brings it up when you like i i challenge you to bring up movies or going to the movies to greaty and see if he mentions the movie swordfish you mean nineteen nine swordfish yes is at i'm pretty sure it's nineteen nine bring it up i promise you you'll get a story about swordfish until you get a five-dollar bet on that no because i'm talking about i'm not going to take on because i can't even but i thought it's the best movie that's i saw that the other day and so i wake up the other day you mean i was just got a story about it because like his daughter wanted to go see it and he was like all right but i'm told to go to a man is a source of it the kind of uh... caromans are you great actually never seen them what so with you telling me that i know you have never seen how they're still uh...

maybe i mean that is the only way of the small okay scratch or fish is a must-ball instead of his lips and you know she's in there one second i got a reward my brain let's start the game of the world i just went to my christmas my brain's broken i just went to my company company christmas party had a few drinks did you just say that you saw he's ledger he's ledger and said she's really good that he's really good in that okay so that's why i brought because you said i saw he's led her and i said how they're also in that okay i think he's like her she's really good that i went that doesn't make sense that he not say he's led her did he say he stand great pocket i think that i think that i really do it really do it's gonna be a lot of it i don't think so uh... man i know you're gonna like second guess all the work stuff and you're gonna think about that all even though you didn't say anything that no i didn't say anything bad i'm more worried about cutting out me just being a complete imbecile so let's tell people what we're talking about it first off we always forget welcome to dana brendt live forever live forever that's the plan i don't know that we necessarily have a theme but it seems to kind of fall into the river accidentally most of the time yeah i want the things that we are interested in we technically kind of way to lead them towards living forever part not on purpose but no totally accidentally because we couldn't come up with a name and breaking up with uh... well actually came up with brendt and live forever but i'm like that is is hard to say didn't say that actually i was totally from the get-go i was like i think dance has been in front of brendt it does it's only this if you don't be as as pious and don't take the you know if you want to be the front man whatever yeah i don't know something where i was thinking about that on the way over here i was like man we used we originally started podcast it was originally called what we think we know we were totally going to be as the whole show yet is live all time not live just be like in our brains if we thought something was true just stated as fact so i think that's where it's up we should just completely be as the whole thing well see the problem is that's gonna turn a lot of the of the immediately now who was speaking of uh... because i doubt he listens don't do it some people think it's a bad thing i find it is terrible okay you're not going to talk about what i think you're not going to know so i am proud owner of a xbox one x it's a new machine that came out recently so there's a tech demo called insects and all it does is give you like a little video you know kind of like uh...

you know one of those like frame rate tests yeah it's like a little video on pc it's kind of the same thing but it gives you a button where it's like okay this is enhanced mode this is unenhanced so you see there's been a great experience so uh... on xbox live there's this feature called clubs and i'm like let's see if i'm not going to be close i've joined some of the only one member of is insects is dope and i'm drunk uh... and uh... i feel like somebody else started it but i just ran with it i've been posting things about a fictional game long-term called insects that you need on the feet for that demo i'm like man just got a little seven yes i can't believe i beat the picnic level the was really tough and i i didn't think i didn't get past the answer so i have anyone reposted like with the photo i thought it was just a uh...

yeah let me grab a phone because i got a random i'm not so excited about this is i was so excited a random message yesterday on xbox live which also comes to my phone from some dude named uh... uh... evil evil cord i don't care if you know you'll go down what's up i was joined by a lot of like twenty more photos of the way you're gonna be them live on the air right now uh... this guy evil cord and just randomly randomly dude sends me hello like what's up say i'm your worst nightmare that's what he said that's what he said first thing very nice as a uh...

not possible for you to be my worst nightmare i'm married hahaha you know just you should be like no the worst nightmare is a late hahaha he was like uh... just getting i need your help with insects because i just get a video over and over and over yes that is a successful troll my friend it is i'm not even a troll and i respond uh... no problem i get that all the time he tried pressing select the start of the main menu needed he said no won't work and it is a bunch of galdy i was like all my bad i didn't get the notification is your game of the day and he just responded yes uh... i'm grabbing my face is that is so good i could run with that like i was going to tell you about last night like i want to go up to club yeah i want to just to post on it yes fall to your vice man appreciate it got myself the level seven yeah oh my god i'm so excited and i know uh...

i have so many ideas right now i know it's fun so this is what you do i mean it's almost worth you building a game with the same also and she agreed to be like i'm totally fine with creating like a game wiki while i'm at work oh my god for a fake insects game are we about to troll the world or at least xbox yeah at least that guy that doesn't get it here check the wiki out you should check my wiki too don't have a jury just say no i figured out by going to the wiki and then just like have a legit wiki page yeah there's three of us we could easily edit a wiki oh yeah and no one's gonna be like delete this is not true and we'll just we'll just find like some images from other like insects games like this this one smasher or something this is why i'm not a billionaire throwing a picture from like honey i shrunk the kids with the ant this is why i'm not a billionaire if i were a billionaire i would buy i would pay a programmer to make an insects game oh i would do so that i could play it and show him meet like here watch this video see what i do to get past this part yeah and be like i don't even get that part like this is an actual game and it's like no i paid some hundred of the dollars to make a fake game just to troll you i can never be a millionaire because i would waste my money i feel like i would give most of it away i know but if you had a few extra hundred bucks would you pay a program in just a troll dude if you had unlimited money oh for sure absolutely right without a doubt i would never be batman i have no way to do that i'd much i i would be the joker but with lots of money you know what speaking of which real quick this this week's episode imagination creativity creation worries and the thing that was interesting to me is the intangible like it's it's funny that there are so many intangible things uh and easy and we're not going to talk about love but an intangible thing like love is something and we'll maybe a little bit i mean if you want to an intangible thing like love most people accept as real an intangible thing like creativity inspiration people also accept as real but we don't have any hard and fast truth about what it is where it comes from why it is and uh i don't know we can dive into that a little bit yeah absolutely like as far as creativity goes it's kind of it's kind of weird but kind of makes sense that i mean i think a lot of what we're going to talk about today is about the hero's journey one of the most common themes about mythological stories or at least that's what i'm going to talk about a lot of research yeah um so do you want to you want me to preface that a little bit with uh some of the story i want to get too real quick i want to get back to what i was just talking about but go ahead so most mythological stories share a storyline not meaning they're in the same universe but if you look at it from a broad scale they follow the same similar steps a lot of them do yes okay i as a person have thought of my own stories and when you think about your stories you think about how i think about how they relate to the hero's story and they hear stories not the only type of story you can tell no not all but like for example what i was just about talk about know what i think would be a great comic tell me all right imagine batman somehow somehow joker tricks him into somehow getting arrested bruce bruce win bruce boy the rest of bruce win batman no and somehow joker inherits bruce money okay now tell me that wouldn't be a good story long the things joker could do joker had the resources of bruce win that's an interesting idea man it hasn't been done right i don't know i don't read this yet i know but i've never heard of it i haven't either you would think it'd be as good as like killing joker something that you've heard of as far as easy stories but anyways imagine think that he would need his resources but imagine but maybe he's never had them well i mean he's he plays jokes i mean he's the joker he plays he tricks people that's what he is he is the great trickster right in the batman universe right now imagine a trickster with unlimited resources the scale of his tricks don't brush a song right right i could just imagine the things joker would do with batman's money oh yeah it'd be insane you know with brother i which is the thing that basically monitors all of gotham like what joker could do and even that relates to this whole hero story to talk about a little bit about the hero's journey here's journey not story sorry real quick just because it might plan to what you're about to talk about that i was literally in a bit i just want to say like i just i always thought of writing a comic and this is my imagination just coming up with a storyline like what if joker had the unlimited resources of batman it'd be pretty amazing and then the other heroes had to stop the ultimate villain basically which is funny because that plays into one of the seven story archetypes boom boom boom okay the main story archetype i have to i have to say what i know what i enjoy as far as my stories go is the hero's journey hero's journey is everything from lord of the rings hobbit all the marvel movies follow the hero's journey literally every single one of them if you think about it they really do true i mean every big story line you can think of that involves i mean what's the one with the woman who shoots arrows uh what the woman who shoots arrows says much people dystopian catness oh hunger games hunger games yeah it is based around the hero's journey very close well that's weak at me okay hang on a sec so seven story archetypes in theory encompasses everything now two of them according to some people encompass all oh really so here they are in no particular order overcoming the monster rags to riches okay the quest voyage in return redemption and rebirth or rebirth and redemption and then the two that supposedly encompass everything comedy and tragedy that's why the drama masks yes comedy and tragedy i could see the comedy and tragedy because i mean all stories are either comedy or tragedy sort of yeah i mean can you name something that's not a comedy or tragedy well i think you're right though with the hero's journey which i also and see all those other things you mentioned sound like part of the hero's journey like different sections of a lot of it's not one particular thing there's these are layers most good stories have layers most of them are onions correct uh blooming on some trends some shiver shriveled as my fuckers are hot and they come up all right i love that difference off of that it's just a bit hurts okay well can i real quick go over the hero's journey yeah and what that is or the parts okay well it was great created okay let's say created it was not even a theory i don't know what to call it it was an idea written down by josecambal that all mythological stories and even stories today follow what's called the hero's journey which is more more of an analysis is what you say analysis correct okay real quick just a backstory dan has an english degree i do not so we're gonna start from there i'm gonna get my point and then nam's gonna analyze everything that's not even a word analyze all right so that as i was researching the thing i found that most easily described the hero's journey was was what i have written down this day right here basically imagine a clock okay on the wall you know one through twelve the hands so hero's journey is basically it's a trip that hero takes so we start at one o'clock one o'clock is the call to adventure every here you can think of gets a call to adventure nine times out of ten it's not something that they want it's not something that they're after but it's something that's pushed upon them like you think of um the hobby frodo doesn't want the ring he's given the ring or he won't let's actually go with lord of the rings bill of or no frodo doesn't want the ring he's good luck reluctant hero sure reluctant hero exactly they're the pushed into or they stumble upon their adventure right something they want to do but something they have to do they're destiny you know what i don't know if it's in your notes there but i i i i i i know the things that i think is funny well not funny but i notice it in so many things and it's through i mean ages and ages i mean thousands of years of mythology and story writing is uh a very common trope of uh the arming of the warrior what do you mean so the easiest way to think of it is so action movie i'm about to go kick ass like uh they killed my family i want revenge well now i'm gonna go to my gun safe in the secret panel in my house and there's always those noses right like yeah locked and loaded ready to go i'm grabbing my grenade launcher and this gun and this gun and that seemed like every movie look like pay attention next time you're watching an action movie that arming of the warrior doesn't happen like that happens in almost every myth every story that is you know like a quest style story all right i told you it up that's still is fine all right that is that is part of the hearing so okay we start okay i'm gonna go through the clock 12 steps of a hero's journey do it step one the ordinary world this is where the hero is living his normal life everything is fun everything is normal he's a normal person or a gas station hobbit or who is a bitch exactly step to the call the adventure where something is thrust upon them they're forced into an adventure that they sometimes won't sometimes don't want but it's not their choice they they have no choice in the matter they have to deliver a ring to a volcano somebody holds me up at suggestion they have to save the galaxy from evil dude maybe i just have to save the other chick that works with the guest it could be a short absolutely three o'clock refusal the hero shoots down the journey no i'm not gonna do that there's no way i'm not strong enough i can't do this blah blah blah blah some of my job excuses excuses excuses some of my job to throw this ring of volcano step four i'm doing cool hand gestures by the way mentor help gandalf comes in i'm gonna help you take that ring to the mountain mentor yeah yep every every journey you can think of starts with someone who who has more power than the hero yep who could easily accomplish the task for some reason doesn't and it's like okay well i'm just gonna help you by giving you what you need i'm gonna give you the army need i'm gonna give you the skills you need i'm gonna teach you to do what you need to do what you think i'm not gonna help you yeah like oh no you can't have this magical cape step five crossing threshold this is where hero enters from his ordinary world into a magical world yep this is where i'm gonna speak a lot of orderings because it's super yeah it's it's exactly everybody knows yeah it's something everyone knows this is where Frodo leaves the shire and enters into a you know they cross the threshold hey this is the furthest we've ever traveled outside the shire you know that point i've never even read the books but you know they say that in the books of course i did read the books but not all of them step six test allies enemies this is where the hero gains allies and is tasked with defeating his first big speed hump it's uh it's a mid-level boss it's a mid-level boss exactly yep it's the spiders in hot in the hobbit yeah mid-level boss seven approach this is when they fate they come up to the big boss this is the final boss fight this is walking into the room going oh shit should grab this help axe back there and the ammo because i'm short yeah isn't that an old education yeah why are you giving me so much health and ammo right now oh look at this an extra life oh ammo oh a new gun ah shit this is gonna suck eight o'clock or deal then fighting the big boss and not technically it's not necessarily an evil dude it is it's the biggest obstacle in their life right it's the biggest obstacle of their journey it's the peak of the story art step nine reward yep they get treasure they get a new skill they get an infinity stone who's to say depending on what story you're reading they get they get the girl after you know exactly struggling in high school drama all right they get the girl after stopping the robber from the right from the gas station it's the reward that they get for defeating their biggest yeah their task not what's the thing that stops people their biggest hurdle obstacle that's the word kind of stupid ten road back this is the hero's journey back to his normal life yeah he has to go he's returning home not the same man that he was right he's returning home with his new skills journal you know he knows shit now he knows should know he knows right yeah he knows he knows what's out there in the real world and he's returned to his normal life yeah 11 atonement it's when shit starts sinking in yeah going how can i live my normal life knowing that this is out there or i mean how can i just be a normal hobbit knowing that there's this treasure out here i've done all this adventuring i'm a bigger man than i thought i was that's the follow-up you know that's the 12 o'clock return this is when they look at themselves and go i no longer fit in this ordinary world yeah i'm not meant for this anymore i'm meant for this bigger picture and i'm going to return to that and that's literally every single marvel movie pretty much every single one yeah i mean from ant man look at ant man yep think about it he's just a regular robber boom he he gets pushed into finding the suit yep who helps him michael douglas it was michael douglas right yeah thank you min tour comes in hey i'm going to teach you how to use a suit and be a cool guy oh no wasp oh no i defeat him i'm too good to be a regular robber well i guess now i'm a fucking superhero i mean it's literally every single story and even like spider man if you think about back in spider man when it was comics right he didn't really have a mentor but the new spider man movies no not really the new spider man movie they're saying about iron man as his mentor so that they can follow the fucking hero's journey because it's the number one selling motherfucking thing because it's fucking awesome easy whoo i'm sorry man the hero's journey like i've written stories in my head about my own hero's journey not my own hero's journey because that's one of the downfalls about hero's journeys like 99 percent of hero's journeys the hero the hero wants to live their ordinary life and that's why they decline the call to adventure well sure that's what makes it relatable well because no it doesn't make it relatable because it does i always give a super house i'd be like okay i'm gonna go do this badass thing and you went to yeah with superpowers but like the reluctance for like something like lord of the rings i guess the reluctance of giving up your normal life when somebody's like brent you are the chosen hobbit to fucking even though you're a third of the size of everyone you're gonna carry this magical ring across this incredibly dangerous world that no human can do that no elf can do right that you're the smallest and somehow you're the biggest but you're gonna do it you're the best yeah but what i'm saying in our normal life if someone came to you go and hand you a jewel and said dan i'm from the future and it's your utmost important see to get this to this place i'd probably call the police which i guess is where me and you differ i guess you're a hero and i'm an anti-hero which is something i want to talk about later uh well yeah i guess i would never act i mean i'd hear him out you at first you'd be like this dude's obviously crazy but that's a pretty shiny stone and i'm gonna pay everybody's own and do i get to do anything cool like am i just gonna be in lots of danger or do i get to like try and travel do i get a magic sword that's another thing though anything awesome here's journey they hold otherwise go to the next house that guy's not doing anything but if you were in the hero's journey you would decline that offer first yeah for sure me being the craziest son of which i am i topple that motherfucker like it's a fucking train to fucking texas see and you're the first guy to die in those stories yeah i know i'm not a hero brent wanted to jump on him but he wasn't prepared i'm a much more what do you call the people with backup other people god darn it i wish i was better with words no a support character support character support staff yeah i'm not i'm not here's i'm not deadpool i'm weasel that's the best way i can explain it overcoming the monster yeah and see all like i said all those things i described the quest were all those parts that you described the first part but yeah each voice in return yeah each big journey is either a comedy or tragedy they they laugh at a great time or they get home and it's like fuck i lost a bunch of friends that really sucked but i did grow as a person and i will continue my life coming to be dramatic uh yeah absolutely but light and he must character with a happy and cheerful disposition ends well if it if it starts it doesn't matter well and ends well that's a comedy if it starts well it ends bad basically if anything ends badly it's a tragedy so like beowulf would be a tragedy yeah probably whereas lord of the rings would be a comedy i guess technically comedy the ones are like romeo and julia bani and tried yeah mccbeth but see here's the problem yeah you're right when i hear comedy i think oh it's gonna make you laugh but technically that's not what they mean in the old sense of the word no in the old sense of where they mean oh everything good at the end you can look at it you can look at the adventure and go huh yeah remember that time we almost whereas it tried to be like oh shit everyone died that is kind of the point yeah i mean not everyone but you know i'm saying yeah happy ending is you know it's a comedy which which makes me think i guess you know there is dark comedy which is about dark topics but it still makes you look back at those topics and enjoy them so it's still technically comedy right i mean overcoming the monster that should seem pretty obvious yeah i mean i mean that's like independence day godzilla well and when they know when they say monster they don't mean a physical being not always no i mean that's the obvious one well that is the obvious one but they could be depression yeah if you're talking about as well yeah all these can be in absolutely there's plenty of stories with hero journeys they don't overcome a physical beast but they overcome something internal whether it's depression or loss of a loved one regs riches yeah poor protagonists acquire things such as power wealth aladdin or a mate before losing it all and then getting it back again and growing as a person i mean that's basically like all romantic comedies yeah our guardians of galaxy or yeah it's funny actually they put eladdin in here well absolutely aladdin you know he's he's a poor person of the streets he finds you know his uncle tricks him into trying to go in here to get this do you know the actual storyline the original one from yeah what's his really nice kind of like he finds out his uncle's a magician yeah he's like oh wow teach me these things uncle starts teaching me like hey listen i get this really important thing you do i need your help tricks him to going into there to get the the genie but come to find out cave of wonder okay come to find out it's not really his uncle the dude's been tricking him the whole time just to get some poor homeless dude to go in there to get this scene like a lot like the Disney movie yeah it's exactly like except for i don't think he was pretending to be his uncle in the Disney movie i don't know but uh we could be at least list uh the hobbit med max as well comedies voyage and return okay yes the Odyssey obviously the original yeah labyrinth radicals in arina with your vase back to the future basically anything where they go to a magical land and come back to their normal life grown yeah pretty much yeah that's exactly right you know the coming of age story is a big oh for sure what does that call again journey return what was it called yeah uh voyage and return anything any coming of age story is a is a voyager return it's basically someone going out becoming a man or woman coming back to their normal life technically not lee i mean they don't have to leave they don't have to actually travel somewhere they just have to travel technically in time to become a better person and try to fit back into their normal life realizing hey i'm not the same person i was well they're they're they're at that's what they call a dynamic character a dynamic character learn something or changes somehow well and their life is different i think any main characters in a in a story are dynamic i mean who doesn't change most uh most don't change that we know most do change oh yeah uh but there there are lots of stories where they'll change and that's what most people credit as an interesting story because uh the other side of that coin is static characters which don't change at all and can it makes you think a little bit more about the story and what happened which is i think a lot of why that device is used what was that movie that um you and i both watched and then you brought it up later and you mentioned you were gonna mention it was like the one where they're like shooting each other in the fucking warehouse shoot out was it shoot out i think it's just called shoot out yeah yeah completely yeah static characters nobody changes a fucking bit and then it's just like god damn it like they're all the same from beginning to end real quick side note i watched a movie the night that you have to watch okay because it is one of the most interesting not the most interesting but it's a fucking really interesting movie it's called oh shit it's called um hang on one second yeah good sort dude ah fuck off it's called someone makes amaze nick thunes in it i make amaze nick thunes funny shit anyway so i'm gonna continue on a little bit dave makes amaze it's on hulu right now dave makes me dude it's nick thunes the main character it starts off weird gets weirder gets super weird and then normalizes and it's like that was a really fucking good movie what the fuck just happened i like that stuff i know that's why i was watching like i put it on just like i put a lot of movies on just his background noise and i'm not paying attention i'd be not doing anything and then like i'd be looking back and like oh that was weird okay and then i was like wait a second and then all of a sudden i just cut my phone off and i was like i'm watching this movie because it's super interesting motherfucker does that happen to you like sometimes i put things on to purposely fall asleep yeah just i'm like i'm super interested the only way i can do that is if i put on something like i know i've seen a thousand times and i know the whole storyline and i'm not gonna watch it like if i put on like any of the old any of the zones i can put those on false i don't know because i've seen them though but i've seen so many times i know what you're gonna say though but you know what they're gonna say you can predict them but dude that is a really good movie dave makes makes makes all right i know because i'm gonna forget well let me tell you a little bit about it just because we're talking about story so we can talk about any stories go ahead um so the guy his wife goes out of town for a business trip or something i can't remember the exact storyline at the beginning because again i wouldn't pay attention at the beginning and he decides to make a cardboard maze in his living room cool so she gets home and she walks in there like what the fuck's going on like life size like you have to walk into it or you just crawl through it like the size of this room like a pretty big fucking cardboard maze but not like ridiculous bigs and she's like um so what's going on he's like oh my god thank god you're home blah blah he's like don't come in here and she's like what he's like it's not it's not done yet and she's like well come out he's like well i can't now i'm lost in here and she's like it's like the size of this room it's not like just she's like i'll tear it down and start shaking he's like oh my god what are you doing don't stop and like eventually it comes to a point where they go inside of it and it's like like the tardis it's bigger on the inside it's like an actual crazy big garbour maze and like people get killed in it but instead of blood it's like fucking string and she's like is this my good yarn and shit like it's super interesting and really good you have to watch it it's still you'll enjoy it it sounds like my wife is the other character it makes amaze it's gonna go man yeah definitely check it out but no dave dave makes amaze is a great movie again oh siddan yeah go ahead and keep reading off that list buddy well list whatever you're reading okay so when we first started talking about this what was interesting to me uh like i mentioned earlier was uh you know just the idea of where creativity comes from where you know why do we think of these things why where does inspiration come from where does any of it yeah go ahead well sorry to interrupt you i'm not interrupting another person i was waiting for you to stop and point so josec Campbell talks about how he believed that the hero's journey was something from the subconscious right and that's why everyone's stories kind of line up with the same journey so it's not even something that we create but it's something that we perceive what i mean like it's something that everyone notices right it's something that everyone wants or not not wants but it's something that everyone desires maybe it's the wrong word but you know it's like what i was getting at with in the armageddon episode that it's it's a symptom of the human condition yes it's a product of the subconscious right like we are aware therefore we see the hero's journey or we want the hero's journey are we we desire idle yeah exactly because we have insurmountable odds um i mean males in particular are designed to idolize the alpha male and so a hero to a man is basically like man i wish i could jump over that fucking building and then you know you know what we create somebody in our mind that can do that and i know we're like an hour in or whatever but when we say hero we don't mean a fucking dude we mean a fucking hero like heroine hero same fucking thing is what i'm talking about like it's not necessarily dude i know but someone might be like this is talking about just dudes what about heroines anyways i just wanted to mention that i just fucking stupid go ahead it's like saying comedian like what yes yeah exactly is that a thing most comedians would slap you on the face and either call themselves a comic or a comedian yes there are there is a there is a feminine pronunciation of version of the word in english we both pause and start speaking the same time again people shut this episode off i don't know because it will be 100 my fault no i don't know so there really is a feminine pronunciation of comedian yeah it's fucking comedian like it's not male female it's like with an eating a couple of ends and shit comedian like when i think actor i don't think just dudes even though there's even those actress i don't think like i don't know i think you think a lot about dudes fuck off just that one guy what's his name i can't think of his name right now he's so hot there's lots of them you know the guy like Brad Pitt um um newer hotter i just keep thinking oh my god i have his face my head about Brad Pitt he's made of vagina and diamonds what's the dude the guy the hot guy in all the movies frank gossing yeah that dude i said that guy was the goss i'd fucking bang him i'm a dude i don't care i'll say it he's fucking hot uh fucking daddy goss well that guy he's a really good actor he's a great actor i fucking love every move he's in you know it's funny it's it's like the he's like the new generations uh make you rock yeah that's exactly what he is god damn that's pinpoint accuracy right there Dan yeah even when it comes to the voice it's like i had to let him talk a whole lot because when he talks it's like a cartoon character yes like just just let me say just let me say be pretty no just brood over in the corner please i ran gossing who was in the new 21 jump street chanting chanting tatum that's who i was thinking of yeah he's pretty awesome he's pretty fucking awesome i like ryan gossing too but i like that guy i like changing him he's actually funny he's actually like a good like like in movies where you're supposed to be funny it's entertaining are you familiar with carl young i have heard the name while doing research i didn't look into him i've mainly stoke stoke with joseph cambell so but i've heard of young yes not a lot i haven't done a great deal but i've done a little bit of writing and i know how and it's the same i don't play a lot of music either but it's the same inspiration feels the same in in any art form and everyone will tell you that there's a there's a different way to get into the zone and there's you know there's tricks um you know we're when you're in school you know they'll put you in your groups and then you know if you're a responsible kid you do all the work and everybody else just kind of lets you do it and they make you do what's called brainstorming and that's just throwing around ideas which are really just triggers triggers for your brain based on your experience well making you think of things one thing we were gonna do for this episode is word association yeah you want i've got my list ready for you i didn't make a list for you that doesn't matter i mean we're already like fucking well and i'm super hammered so it's gonna be perfect by the way this is gonna be a dan brent lefrer extra long episode exclusive brent dana brent are gonna live extra long episode um that's already that's totally what we're gonna name our long episodes by the way i need to clear your mind okay real quick let's explain what it is real quick let's go for your association it's uh it's a psychologist trip to see where your head's at when they throw you gotta go screw you up it's not that funny man no it's not funny it's gonna be very dark let's go so basically Dan's gonna say a word i'm gonna say the first thing that i think of one word answer one word answer and in less than three seconds now when you say i'm gonna keep going when you say one word i can say something that's two words that's technically one thing nope yes no like if you say water i can say fucking floating dock nope yeah that you'll say a doc but i'm not gonna say doc i'm gonna say floating dock because that's the first thing that comes in my head okay i'm saying it's just makes it harder for me to write down well fuck off i'm the one under the pressure here are you yeah he seemed pretty light oh man i know this is gonna go so okay real quick though so what is this used for like in therapy because it's okay in therapy it's it's it's used for a few reasons in therapy it's to see where someone's mental yeah it's to see where they're at mental um it's kind of like a rorschach test with words yeah the idea is to get people to open up a little bit and if you catch them off guard you know they'll get in the rhythm and they're not thinking too much that's the idea like you're you're getting to that point where you're not paying attention you i know the last week i'm gonna be like a magic eye potion or maybe dog i'm gonna be like bondage you're like yeah you're going to prison i'm gonna picture a magic eye picture anyway are you ready all right no i need clear your mind i know that's what i need a second for you do you want to put a blanket over here's clear mind what the fuck does that mean i can't clear no one can clear their mind you can't think of nothing you can't not exist because i'm not as clear no it's not because you're thinking you're minding clear therefore your mind is just passing through me dude it's not a thing if your mind was clear you're not a duck just rolling off my back well let me tell you what i think if i thought my mind was cleared i technically wouldn't exist while my mind was clear i already put me in another level no i'm not being a dick but i'm saying we're just doing an exercise man the idea is oh i'm just an up a little bit i'm just telling you feels like a test it's not test i know but it's got a rorschach test that's visual i know but this mind as well this is a fucking thing calm down i don't could do well i don't do well answer whatever calms down and say calm down exactly yeah hey if your wife has had a one-to-many vaccas tell her calm down see what happens fuck no hey you're in the bar babe calm down nope okay now things are gonna sure i'll break things instead all right so i it's a device used in i'm lots of different areas it was used when i was in school to get you to loosen up a little bit and think about some different things and kind of see where your head goes so it's not gonna go good why don't we're if you listen back to our fucking relax this is a silly little exercise if you go back to our possession episode yeah yeah yeah you see why you're about to laugh did you know where my head goes instantly for everything that's fine i'm gonna i'm gonna start a big deal can i do some i see like some other fuck off tan i'm giving down the middle finger because he's looking behind me like something's there what how now brown cow i just need to loosen my lips so i can respond quicker go ahead you're already very relaxed super to learn to relax donut hole ear hole peach pit rock salt tuna fish wheel round crime burglar label maker africa slave yo yo around stump grinder green grass angle diagonal soft touch brunch eggs picture frame breeze blow rhythm dance honey sweet lasso cowboy bridge over scratch ticket trumpet noise that's pretty good man okay that's good i thought you're gonna go wait you're like skull death burial uh no man it's good oh so do you see any of those that are trigger that are really weird i just scratch and take it no there's a couple that surprised me i was i was purposely trying to lead me so lead you a little bit yeah where you're trying to lead me just curious just into like path of least resistance so like i was super loose and i really didn't think about the only one that stumbled me was what you say rodeo or lasso or something i thought horse at first and what did i say cowboy i thought horse but then cowboy came up my mouth before i could say horse isn't that weird that you i thought horse but said cowboy when you stop doing it like yeah that's when i stopped doing it like you stopped responding like all the well all the other ones like but they just fell out my mouth that particular one i know i caught up on and i didn't say what i thought a scratching ticket was good it was the first i would have thought scratching itch yeah no ticket like because i bought trumpet noise you know what we were scratching i turned in one today that's probably why it was on my hand i turned in a dollar one it's good it was totally left i know but a lot of people do that they say the same thing over and over peach bit uh i almost as whole too when you said peach i was like i know i can't say whole i knew you were thinking the whole i was like what's the hole in the peach oh the pit rock salt that was good one tuna fish i felt like i was brown crown burglar uh what was the other label uh i'll have to listen back i can't read my writing label maker i don't know yeah i felt bad about that one it was literally the first thing in my mind i know i could see it in your face here it's like all right here we go let hold the paper okay one two the whole point is to get your brain to loosen up a little bit just like those uh riding prompts you sent me that's the whole point is to because inspiration doesn't i mean inspiration doesn't have to come from any specific place me personally you know when i was riding on a regular basis um we talked about and we didn't produce any of it we talked about automatic writing like that's that's one of my favorite ways to loosen up my brain yes and that's just writing without stopping and i don't i don't look at the screen like if i'm using it's almost impossible because my hand hand writing is so terrible but if i'm looking if i'm using a computer i don't look at the screen and i'll just type and i'll just type and i'll just type and i'll go for like 10 minutes and then i'll stop and usually if i read back over it there's something in there where i'm like hmm that's a cool idea i'm gonna go back and explore that i haven't done that a few times yeah is it weird that i start all of mine with the same words no do you know i start every single one of every time i've only i haven't done it maybe a couple hand times this is the whole handful times a couple hand times that's not something yeah that's not something yeah just welcome to the jungle welcome to the jungle i type welcome to the jungle and then i start typing uh that's good like welcome to the jungle i got here when i was 16 and then i just you know i just we're a good jumping off one yeah i don't know why that particular saying but all right i'm gonna go through 24 words real quick because i found something online that makes a random list of words all right um okay heady soft cute bunny rings lord quilt patchwork load truck oh shit phone cut off that's not good i was gonna okay now i'm gonna redo this i'm not gonna run down we're just gonna go through them because it's just gonna be funnier yeah that's fine all right give me two second 24 words ready on the count of three we're gonna go one two three pigs blanket friends terrible show communicate uh too long mouth let's speak exclusive journal pretty face unruly student gigantic monster heavy load resolute song hellish disaster heavy heavy heavy buzz stupendous woman holiday christmas special child rifle range seashore c-shell clip uh too long heal your foot crib what do you say crib crib cradle craven josh eggs big and dependent diapers identify prevete live forever denverant last i made up if you didn't know good that so friends i felt like you kind of set that one up this person came to my head not funny was really the first thing no i said terrible show a terrible show yeah whatever it was supposed to be one word dan sorry there's another that was funny uh stupendous woman yeah i don't connect those two words together at all stupendous stupendous i think like i don't know i don't think of a woman i think more of like a storyline seashore c-shell obviously there's no exclusive what did you say for exclusive journal yeah that was an interesting one i met my journalist but journal was the word the journal is exclusive only to you yeah true it's just i mean it's just it's very rorshach kind of yeah it's very like there's no wrong answer like let's just see what you think about it it's almost like the it's almost like attacking the subconscious which a lot of people believe is where inspiration comes from well um it's like forcing accidental thought which i mean really i mean that's that's kind of the hardest then well there's a book by steven pressfield i told you about it's called the war of art yeah it is all about it's a i listen to the audiobook it is it's something you need to listen to okay what's what's it about it is uh basically book report time book report he he is an author who steven pressfield okay wrote the book uh art of war war of art i'm sorry i keep messing that up so basically he goes on to tell how he was like he wanted to be an author and he like couldn't find his way he like lived in the streets and was like piss poor broke yeah blah blah and then he writes about how he found his muse right and he describes what the muse is and not that it's a thing but it's more like everyone has a muse what inspires you right it could be well this book is my muse this book that i read when i was a child inspires me this you know this painting inspires me my wife inspires me the thought of this that or the other inspires me like a muse could be anything that's true and he talks about and he just talks about how to become like a creator right you basically have to give yourself into it you're not very true you're not you're not creating you're transmitting what the creation wants to be yeah you know saying like i do you're translating what the muse is giving you right so i mean this is a pretty common topic in um in literature so just real quick uh the romantics which i mean there's a couple different ways to view romantic ideas i'll go over them real quick because if you're talking to an english major douchebag like myself they're gonna ask you to specify big r little r when romance is spelled with a lower case r is generally a fantastic narrative sensational or supernatural talking about an exotic place exotic setting so like you said that's what a lower case r lower case r so lower case r would be what most people consider romantic flowers going to huai carrying somebody over the threshold that's lower case r capital r romantic is generally unrealistic it's a narrative or a story taking place in a bizarre setting mark by extravagant subject matter or two-dimensional stereotypical characters quick question sure just because i have to ask windows romantic crossover into erotic because there has to be a lot of subjective i know but like romantic with capital r uh they were talking about a theme of a story basically right or a place unimaginable place not unimaginable but non-existent unrealistic is what you said right yeah sort of where's lower case you're like i went on a romantic vacation that would be lower case uh yes whereas big r romance would be as you can think of how it's but then literature because it's it's more dramatic the romantic bond we had it's it's okay so romance lower case r can be you think i would just think from from english an upper case would be a person place or thing lower case would be a descriptive of a player-sto-player thing that's very close okay that's just basic literature i know so lower case would be more like a romantic island a romantic island yeah that's a good romantic romantic date either one romantic island's a good good one though because it can be either a romantic island or the romantic island we went to right so here's here's the difference lower case r romantic island what do you think i think a beach waves hula dancers flowers lights camembertize yeah a wine ticket it's an experience in my wife so capital r romantic is totally different capital r romantic is that's where my wife died and i can't stop thinking about it that's not romantic Dan yes it is it's it's it's an over it's an overflow of emotion about a particular emotion about a personal or a particular thing or person or whatever the romantic drive home from wisconsin where my wife died in a car wreck well you're romanticizing it if you are so if you're if you're like making a big deal about it and turning it into a story where you're being overly dramatic about it let's say you're romanticizing your wife's death i got i got he's saying i got yeah i understand but i got to do this if i was romanticizing about a stone i had a steal from someone elkorda zum would that be capitalized spanish of the heart i was so glad you got that i had to say it i had to say ever since you said romance it's good it's a title that's also capitalized fucking love that movie yeah i see what you're saying though so like if you're romanticizing about something like technically it's not like ooh hoolah dancing loving but it's like almost obsession yeah exactly it's it's almost like a psychosis like well like if you're making it more than it is like it's my emo if my wife that is almost perfect i'm not gonna lie capital r romantic is emo but like let's say my wife died from she had a heart attack from eating fucking canoles and i was like i just fucking romanticized about fucking canoles because that was her favorite food even though it killed her i fucking love canoles because it reminds me of her yeah that would be capital or yes romantic ask anoleis 100 like it like it like when you like like not not that it gives you erotic imagination but it gives you a ratic imagination but like it's like eating canole like it doesn't turn you on but it like makes you heart sick and makes your brain explode with thoughts of your yeah whoever yeah nostalgia and memory and it doesn't have to be death and just anything that like oh what's what's the story i can think of where like someone leaves someone like yeah and it's like oh every time i think of this like it reminds me back to when me and that girl works down there make you feel fuck yeah there's a lot of romantics right okay so that's one source of inspiration did you know that uh is there anything that you can i don't want to put you on spot but anything that you could think of that you would start with capital r that don't above your wife for what just anything you think of for what that like my experiences like and throughout your life that you would say well i would put a capital r on that romantic whatever yeah i think everyone has my i'll say i'm not afraid to say it but go ahead creek romantic creek you have a romantic creek in your past yeah i do which one tell me about i mean i'm not going to tell you details because my wife might listen to this but there has been there's just no way gonna make it here it gives you an emotional connection though there is a particular creek here in trolson that i have taken many women to yeah and when i think of that particular creek that was one of my moves to many different memories yep and emotions come to my head yeah and it's not sexual it's not like oh when i think this is a girl i banged on this dock i mean yeah some but not the majority i mean fitty fitty but you know what i'm saying like it brings more emotion that it does it's not sexual it's more like i'm having more sexual feelings about the fact that you're understanding this concept i totally understand it yeah you get it i have a fucking heart damn it god damn it no that's but i'm glad that you understand did you know that inspire is a medical word for breathing in that makes 1000 cents expires breathing out it is and that makes sense when you see something that's where you go well i didn't think about that one like it takes your breath away you know it takes a breath away oh my god yeah inspired like no that oh my god that's like that's so interesting blown uh did it blow your mind when you first read that because i love it you don't see that mind blown but maybe it's not getting already but that like when you see something that's like awe inspiring i didn't think about the physical aspect of it and look even then i just said awe inspiring right it's you like like you see something like when i say it takes your breath away it's not because you can't breathe it's because you breathe in you go yeah you're inspired it's fucking inspired god damn it damn dude that is the most that's that's the number one thing for this episode that is the most interesting thing i fucking heard so far it's pretty cool do you have more mind blowing shit you're about to tell me that because i don't know there's all kinds of stuff out there man okay real quick this is definitely a plus episode dan and brent live for extra long plus size
