from Impact Talks · host Startup Funding Event
Astrobiologist Armando Azua-Bustos is the CEO of Atacama Biotech, where he's working to find and characterize species that are able to survive in the extreme conditions imposed by the Atacama Desert in Chile. In the past few years, a range of different lifeforms has been discovered in the Atacama, showing fascinating adaptations to extremely low water availability, high UV radiation, high salinity, and other environmental stresses. For these same reasons, the desert is considered a good analog model of the planet Mars. Azua-Bustos is a TED Fellow. He earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and microbiology as well as an MSc in biological sciences and an MSc in biochemistry. ... 0:38 Introduction & Background Armando 9:29 Life on Mars 18:42 Humans on Mars 20:32 Discoveries in the Atacama Desert 27:29 Climate on Mars 30:59 The Technology Enabling Discoveries 38:39 Life on other Planets/Moons? 53:52 Reaching the Speed of Light 55:40 Collaboration between Countries 1:03:40 Thoughts on Science & Sharing Knowledge 1:10:19 Daily Life as a Scientist 1:15:57 Becoming a TED Fellow ...
