Imposter Syndrome and the Disguises We Wear

from UNTRAINED · host Iris Zimmermann and Whitney Otto

In this episode Whitney and Iris take on the popular subject of Imposter Syndrome, a label that originated in 1985 as Imposter Phenomenon, from the work of Dr. Pauline Clance. We will share with you our take on HOW and WHY the sensations of “faking it” show up for our clients and frequently for us. We advocate for finding ways to work with these thoughts and feelings productively; by using it as a gateway into the feelings being masked, as well as the role of the mask itself. We are not experts on the topic of imposter syndrome; rather experiencing related thoughts and feelings through our clients/ in ourselves and sharing strategies and frameworks we have found helpful. In our conversation, we reference examples from our lives as well as those of our clients. These fall into the category of people who feel weighed down by the “faking it feelings.” We recognize there are people who are crippled by feelings associated with imposter syndrome and may need clinical level interventions.Links to articles mentioned or quoted in the podcast: Why Everyone Feels Like They are Faking It https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/02/13/the-dubious-rise-of-impostor-syndromeStop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome https://hbr.org/2021/02/stop-telling-women-they-have-imposter-syndrome Iris’ Coach and Imposter Syndrome Guru Dr. Lisa Orbe-Austin Instagram https://www.instagram.com/drorbeaustin/?hl=enDr. Lisa Orbe-Austin workbooks https://www.amazon.com/stores/Lisa-Orbe-Austin/author/B086PQHL5C?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true
