Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube are set to officially launch the Gauteng Human Resource Development Council (GHRDC), a new provincial body aimed at addressing one of the province’s biggest challenges: ensuring that education and skills development keep pace with the demands of the economy. The Council will bring together representatives from government, business, organised labour, higher education institutions and civil society to develop coordinated solutions to skills shortages, youth unemployment and workforce readiness. It will also oversee the implementation of the Gauteng Master Skills Plan, which seeks to align education and training with sectors that have the greatest potential for economic growth and job creation. Gauteng remains South Africa’s economic powerhouse, yet it continues to grapple with high levels of youth unemployment, poverty and inequality. Many graduates struggle to find work despite holding qualifications, while employers often report shortages of technical and specialised skills. The establishment of the Council is intended to bridge this gap by ensuring that the province develops the skills needed for both current and future industries. The launch also comes as government places increasing emphasis on preparing young people for a changing labour market shaped by digital transformation, artificial intelligence, green industries and advanced manufacturing. Success, however, will depend not only on planning but also on whether the Council can deliver measurable outcomes that translate into employment opportunities and improved collaboration between education providers and industry. For students and young job seekers, the Council could play an important role in influencing the types of qualifications, training programmes and workplace opportunities that become available in Gauteng over the coming years.
