Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, an alleged underworld figure, is at the center of a major corruption case involving a R228‐million SAPS tender linked to Medicare24. He had pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud, corruption, and money laundering, and entered into a plea deal with the state that proposed an eight‐year sentence. The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, however, rejected that proposal and suggested a twelve‐year sentence instead. Following this decision, Matlala withdrew from the plea agreement. His lawyer, Anneline van den Heever, confirmed the withdrawal before Magistrate Ignatius Petrus du Preez.
