In The Know - Chris Erickson Valley Assistance Services with Updates! (Aired 12/08/2025)

from Community Podcasts · host KGVY Media

This week on In The Know, Andy Taylor welcomed Chris Erickson, Executive Director of Valley Assistance Services (VAS), for an in-depth look at the organization’s mission and upcoming programs. Chris explained that VAS operates as both a social service provider and a community health resource, offering transportation support, rent and utility assistance, diaper bank services, and wellness and socialization programs designed to keep residents engaged and supported. With federal funding and grant opportunities becoming more limited, VAS increasingly relies on community fundraising — and one of their biggest events, the VAS Hoedown Fundraiser, is coming up on January 10th from 1–4 PM at The Longhorn Grill & Saloon. The event features a BBQ buffet, line dancing, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and live music from Hardscrabble Road, with tickets available now at Nancy Pants, the GV/Sahuarita Chamber, Posada Java, and VAS offices.Chris also highlighted recent expansions to VAS’s workforce development programs, which now include three focused tracks: one for older adults returning to work, one for women called Pathways to Power, and another designed for individuals receiving SNAP, WIC, or similar assistance. These programs go far beyond resume help — VAS coaches provide guidance on cover letters, interview skills, online job platforms, and even the smart use of technology and AI, thanks in part to workforce coach Allie, who specializes in today’s digital hiring landscape. One of the strongest themes Chris emphasized was VAS’s holistic approach to helping clients. Rather than offering short-term fixes or temporary Band-Aids, the organization looks at the full picture — identifying the causes behind a household’s challenges and working toward long-term stability and positive outcomes. Whether someone comes in needing utility support or navigating life changes, the VAS team focuses on creating lasting solutions that improve overall quality of life.Listeners seeking program information, assistance, or fundraiser tickets can reach Valley Assistance Services at 520-625-5966 or visit www.valleyassistanceservices.org. Andy closed the episode by thanking Chris for the impactful work VAS continues to do in the community.
