I walk home with heavy steps. I look up at the sky, rain is falling, a bird spreads its wings and disappears into the wind. I sit on the apartment stairs, crumple up a flyer I got, and say— “Why do I live?” I still don’t know the answer. Round and round, this merry-go-round keeps turning, and I’m spinning it alone. The future I dreamed of is still out of reach. Like an inchworm, I can only change my color to fit into the world. I hide the self I can’t throw away, caught in a dream I can’t wake from. The only thing I hold on to is the strength to take a step. A small warmth inside me— maybe someday I can light it. “Why do I live?” I still don’t know the answer. Round and round, this merry-go-round keeps turning, and I’m spinning it alone. Someday, I will light it.
