Hour 2: Ken Holt: "The son of a U.S. Marine, I grew up in seven states, finally landing in Jacksonville, FL for my high school and college years. Musical influences include my Uncle Henry's mandolin pickin' laced with gospel influences; Duane and Dickie's search for the right guitar harmony in the right place; John and Paul's six chord innovations; my dad's Willie and Waylon record collection; and my own appreciation for a catchy radio song. Today, because my music blends together a bit of country, rock 'n roll, bluegrass, and old-school pop, Americana describes it best. Daily, when I'm not walking the dog and putting food on the table, you will find me refining lyrics, trying out new song arrangements, recording tracks in my home studio, and rehearsing with my current duo, The Promise. One booking agent put it this way, "original music to evoke nostalgia, longing, joy and hope." In the mid 70's and early 80's I played bass with the regionally successful New England band, The Blend. Two MCA records and two tours including opening slots for The Who, ZZ-Top, Hall & Oats, 38-Special, Loggins and Messina, The Outlaws, Blue Oyster Cult, Charlie Daniels, Foghat and more, gave me a lion's share taste of the road and the joy of playing music with good friends. Today, The Promise's first gig was at the Florida Americana Music Festival in 2024. Reflecting back and projecting ahead, if I wasn't playing music, I don't know what else I would do. Why? Because music is what I do, yesterday, today, and prayerfully, tomorrow. As I prepare to release a new digital and vinyl record in early 2025, I am already recording and preparing for the next release. Why? That's what I do.
