India: Cockroaches, Entrance Exams and Political Disruption

We initially contacted Sukumar Muralidhalan when he published his book The Nation and its Citizens: Tales of Bondage and Belonging as India was about to celebrate its 75th anniversary. And as his book covered all aspects of India and he obviously thinks very deeply and seriously about the topic, we began a conversation with him. Honestly, much of the conversation consists of us asking him to explain something or share his opinions about events in India. Fortunately he doesn’t seem to mind and he’s always been generous with his expertise. Gil Halsted, Amitabh Pal and Laila Ahmed talked to Muralidharan about the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Indian youth and their current rather dire situation as well as the massive number of votes they will have in future elections. Sukumar Muralidhalan is now an independent writer and researcher but has also been an academic, a journalist, a journalism instructor, trainer and press freedom campaigner in addition to being an author.
