Indigenous Allyship: An Immigrant's Right, Responsibility and Privilege

In a recent study, more than 50% of immigrants surveyed that they have little knowledge of the Canada's truth of the genocide and assimilation of Indigenous Peoples. As immigrants to Canada, we come with immense privileges in accessing community resources and government supports. But a big part is missing when we are not taught the truth and the reality of the Original People's experiences in Canada. If we want to integrate into Canada, becoming an ally to Indigenous people is a vital part of it.September 30th marks a significant day as a result of Action #80 in the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Act. As immigrants, we need to not only recognize our privileges but our responsibilities towards advocacy and allyship for Indigenous rights and agency. Allyship isn't a check box, a competitive sport that we trophy around for accolade and pride.Allyship is a way of life, a journey and a constant way of being. As immigrants, we need to elevate, amplify and uplift voices of others whom have not been listened to. We have a responsibility and we have immense privilege on this beautiful part of the world to remember, to learn and to be changed. It is our right, our responsibility and our privilege to be an ally.
