Indigenous people worldwide still suffer racism and other injustices: UN

A decade after the adoption of a landmark declaration that upholds their rights, indigenous people worldwide still suffer racism, discrimination, unequal access to education and other injustices. That assertion has been made by three UN human rights experts in a joint statement issued this Wednesday, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.Dianne Penn has been speaking to one of the experts, Albert Barume, chair of a UN mechanism that helps countries to promote and protect indigenous people, who make up less than five per cent of the global population. He began by outlining the significance of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, adopted 10 years ago this September.
