Before sunrise, a Roman street begins to stir. Bakers prepare bread, water is carried through narrow lanes, and shutters remain closed above small shops and rented rooms. In these ordinary neighborhoods lived women whom Roman writers might call meretrices, women who sold sex. Yet their own lives are difficult to recover. This episode moves through the streets of Pompeii and Rome, considering slavery, freedom, work, money, housing, law, social stigma, and the small traces left in graffiti and archaeology. It visits Pompeii’s surviving lupanar, not as a scene of spectacle, but as a compact workplace of rooms, walls, lamps, and uncertain evidence.
