Inside The Mind We Live In
from Inside The Consulting Room - Understanding the Child Behind the Behaviour · host Kim Lee
Send us Fan MailWhat if the biggest driver of your reactions isn’t what happened, but what it meant to you? In part one of our series, Kim Lee, child and adolescent psychotherapist, explores the mind we live inside and why two people can share an event yet carry home entirely different inner worlds. We draw a clear distinction between external reality—facts, actions, observable events—and internal reality—the feelings, meanings, and memories that shape our interpretations. That split explains why a calm correction can land as guidance in one child and shame in another, and why arguments so often miss the mark when they fixate on details instead of impact. We unpack how early experiences lay down emotional templates: is the world safe or unsafe, are others reliable, do my feelings matter. These templates tune the nervous system and prime perception, becoming the lens through which we see the present. From there, we dive into psychological truth, the kind that isn’t about accuracy but about lived experience. When someone says “You don’t love me,” the factual rebuttal may be correct, yet it can erase a genuine sense of distance or misattunement. Ignoring that emotional truth splits the mind—one part holding facts, another guarding pain—and sets the stage for defenses like denial, minimization, and projection.Rather than pathologizing defenses, we frame them as protective functions that help us survive what we can’t yet bear. Still, living inside defense narrows connection and clarity. The work is integration: bringing feeling and fact into conversation so neither dominates. We offer practical shifts—asking what something means, tracking body cues, validating impact while holding boundaries—that help parents, caregivers, and anyone curious about their inner life build tolerance for complexity. Closing out, we set the stage for next time’s deep dive into how defenses operate and how to work with them wisely. If this lens helps you see your patterns—or your child’s—with more compassion, share the episode, subscribe for the full series, and leave a review letting us know where facts and feelings most often collide for you.
