Insights Into Teens: Episode 94 ”Current Events: Insurrection”

This week we address the difficult topic of the January 6th protest turned insurrection at the United States Capitol Building. It was a dark and scary time for our country to see what was thought to be peaceful protestors supporting President Trump's claim of victory in the 2020 United States Presidential election March on the Capitol, lay siege to a joint session of congress and breach the building all for the purpose of disrupting the final stage in certifying the election. We'll discuss what happened and the progression from protest, to riot to insurrection. We'll layout the timeline of events as we know at this moment. We'll talk about some of the crimes committed and the assault on the building itself and what led up to it. We'll also talk about the outcome. What was the ultimate result of the insurrection. What happened to the people who participated. What consequences the president and his party face as a result. What the future might hold after this unprecedented event. And finally we'll have an open discussion about how to talk to your kids about events like this so they can understand what is going on, feel safe with day to day life and can cope with the fear and anxiety unexpected events like this can bring on.
