Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DbOpAKBMyvg/Three of the world's leading global health organizations announced this week a major new effort to develop the first effective vaccine against Group A Streptococcus, or Group A Strep. The Wellcome Trust, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the European Investment Bank unveiled a $140 million initiative to accelerate vaccine research and move the most promising candidates into human clinical trials.Group A Strep is best known for causing strep throat, but it can also lead to scarlet fever, life-threatening invasive infections, and rheumatic heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, these infections are responsible for well over 500,000 deaths worldwide each year, with the greatest burden falling on children and young adults in lower-income countries.Researchers say this unprecedented international partnership could significantly shorten the time needed to develop a safe and effective vaccine against one of the world's most common bacterial infections.References for this report are available on my website.#GroupAStrep #VaccineResearch #GlobalHealth #InfectiousDisease #MedicalResearch
