This research reevaluates the high turnover of novice nurses by shifting the focus from individual shortcomings to the asymmetrical power dynamicsthey face when interacting with senior staff. Utilizing Goffman’s dramaturgical theory, the study illustrates how new nurses engage in "performative survival," adopting specific scripts and managing impressions to gain social acceptance and professional legitimacy. While these strategic performances allow practitioners to navigate a demanding workplace, the authors argue that this constant emotional labor leads to profound burnout and the internalization of a toxic professional culture. Ultimately, the text calls for systemic organizational change and a more transparent "hidden curriculum" to replace these defensive survival tactics with a foundation of psychological safety.
