Interpreting Scripture: Understanding Negatives

from On The Lane

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/7BeP8APC1m0In this episode, Jeff and Craig continue their series on sound interpretation principles by looking at how the Bible uses negatives. They explain how some questions function as emphatic denials and how simple negatives often imply a strong positive. Through examples from Job and Matthew, they show why slowing down to notice a single word like not can completely change the meaning of a passage and guard us from drawing the opposite conclusion of what the text teaches. They also discuss the difference between God revealing true knowledge of Himself and our inability to comprehend Him exhaustively, along with how Christ’s gentle care for the weak is expressed through a negative statement.Scripture mentioned: Job 11:7 – https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/job/11/7/s_447007 “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?”Matthew 12:18–20 – https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/mat/12/18-20/s_941018 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldring wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.”Links:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@OnTheLanePodcast?sub_confirmation=1Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-7820594Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7GbmsVVjTryD5F0pAaNaKcApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-lane/id1805279371Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church: https://www.carriagelanepres.com/Sermon Livestreams: https://www.youtube.com/@CLPCWorship/streams
