Interview #3 with Mark Matheson

from Act ASAP · host Daniel Kilburn

In this third and final conversation with Mark Matheson, founder of the eCERT Program, we step into the future of disaster resilience—and what it will take to truly protect families, businesses, and communities before the next emergency strikes. This episode goes beyond traditional preparedness models. Mark unpacks a bold, federally supported yet locally owned approach to disaster response—one that combines real-world infrastructure, MAVIS deployment units, asset-backed digital currency, and individual resiliency accounts into a closed-loop system designed for accountability, speed, and long-term stability. We talk candidly about why communities must move from reactive aid to proactive resilience, how financial access after disaster can calm chaos and accelerate recovery, and why leadership—not luck—is the deciding factor when everything is on the line. Mark also shares how the eCERT Program plans to build a 25,000-person civilian disaster workforce and deploy 1,000 MAVIS units nationwide—without competing for existing FEMA funding or relying on hype-driven solutions. What makes this conversation especially powerful is the human element. Drawing from decades of experience in high-stakes environments—from nuclear facilities to military construction in Guam—Mark reflects on the lessons that shaped his philosophy on resilience, accountability, and integrity. His message is clear: resilience is earned through preparation, discipline, and the courage to do what’s right—especially when it’s difficult.Whether you’re a veteran, first responder, emergency manager, community leader, or a parent who simply wants to be better prepared, this episode invites you to rethink what readiness really means—and how you can be part of something bigger. This conversation doesn’t just explain the eCERT vision. It invites you into it.For more information about the eCERT Program or to speak directly with its founder, you can reach Mark Matheson at [email protected]. NEWMORROW SESSIONS - A PodCast Series on the Future of Hospitality Mario C. Bauer, Florian Schneider, Axel Weber & Dr. Tillman Bardt The Newmorrow PodCast is more than a podcast — it's a platform for open dialog on the future of our business, a platform for those building what doesn’t exist yet. Here, we share and embrace our passion for the hospitality industry, but we won’t romanticize the journey. We ask the tough questions, confront uncomfortable truths, and prepare for a future that resists easy answers. We believe that the tougher and wilder times become, the more openly, honestly and humanely people need to talk to each other and act together. We believe, openness, togetherness, and truthfulness should also be cornerstones of a professional community to develop our utopian idea of „open source“. This is a space where visionaries don’t just imagine the future — they wrestle with the paradoxes that shape it: success vs. happiness, data vs. instinct, stability vs. reinvention. Join leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers as they share not what made them — but what’s actively shaping them, now and next. Mark Shaffer Philosopher Kings empowers next-gen professionals to think, speak, and act with knowledge, wisdom, and virtue.  Lum and Abner Old Time guoshibing The series was created by co-stars Chester Lauck (who played Columbus "Lum" Edwards) and Norris Goff (Abner Peabody). Lum always pronounced his own name as Ed'erds and was very annoyed if Abner or anyone brought up his full first name. The two characters performed as a double act, with Lum generally playing the straight man to Abner's attempts to break free from Lum's influence. As co-owners of the Jot 'em Down Store in the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, the pair are constantly stumbling upon moneymaking ideas only to find themselves fleeced by nemesis Squire Skimp, before finally finding a way to redeem themselves. Lum and Abner played the hillbilly theme with deceptive cleverness. In addition to the title characters, Lauck also played Grandpappy Spears and Cedric Weehunt while Goff played Abner, Squire Skimp, Llewelyn "Mousey" Grey, Dick Huddleston, and most of the other characters.Lum and Abner, like most sitcoms of the era, had a live house band, in
