With each seance another layer of the rich tapestry of intricate lives is revealed and how closely their fates are interweaved. The story follows Mrs Wood as a celebrated medium in a world where other mediums are either being revealed as frauds or seemingly outshining her with their more elaborate displays. After hearing a yawn at one particular gathering Mrs Wood decides something needs to be done. Enter Miss Finch. A young girl who wants desperately to be a medium, and after haunting Mrs Wood’s house, is taken under her wing as a pupil.
