Jane Barnsteiner, PhD, RN, FAAN, serves on the Sentinel Event Advisory Committee for the Joint Commission. Barnsteiner, a professor of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a contributing editor for AJN, participated in developing the Advisory Committee’s recommendation that the Joint Commission require all accredited facilities to have a written policy and procedures for enforcing an institutional code of conduct that would apply to all employees and affiliated physicians. AJN Editor-in-Chief, Diana Mason interviews Barnsteiner about the new Code of Conduct and how nurses can use the new requirement to improve communications among all health care workers in the workplace.
