Interview with NBC Senior Edition, JESSICA MACHADO | LOCAL, A MEMOIR

JESSICA MACHADO is a senior editor on NBC News' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team. She was also a staff editor at Vox, Rolling Stones, Vice, Elle, The Cut, Bust, Bitch, among others. Jessica holds BAs in journalism and sociology from the University of  Hawaii and an MFA in creative nonfiction writing from Portland State University. Born and raised in Hawaii by a father whose ancestors are indigenous to the land and a mother from the American South, Jessica wrestles with what it means to be "local."   Her memoir, Local is Interwoven with a rich and nuanced exploration of  Hawaiian mythology, Hawaiian history and traditions; a personal and moving narrative about family, grief, and reconnecting to the land she tried to leave behind.
