Introduction: A Letter to Na-Na

Hi Yu-na, Hi Da-na, It's 고모부. It's been so long since we last saw each other, I hope you'll remember me whenever we get to meet again. Just know that I will never forget either of you: not your mutual love of unicorns, or the questions you asked about alligators in Florida, or that Da-na loved to look at the "Hitchhiker's Guide" book I gave to 아기 고모, or getting to playing dinosaurs with Yu-na, or even how you both made paper spiders for me to help me not be so afraid of them. I imagine things have been very confusing and difficult for you both, and I hope you understand that none of this is your fault; that you did nothing wrong. Wherever you are, I pray that you're safe, well fed, and that you aren't suffering. Most of all, I want you to know that all of us (your daddy, your aunts, your grandparents, and myself) love you and miss you always, and we can't wait to be with you again as soon as possible. They were supposed to be back on Christmas day after visitation and were never returned, in defiance of multiple court decisions both then and since. Unfortunately, for both our family and others, South Korea's legal system by and large does not treat such matters as criminal—let alone abuse—and offers no practical means of enforcement despite court orders demanding the return of Da-na and Yu-na.
