Introduction to EDeology

from EDeology: The People Behind Today's Eating Disorder Treatment Landscape · host Elka Cubacub

In this episode, I explain what this podcast is, why I created it, and how future episodes will be structured. The eating disorder professional world has become so politically and ideologically charged.  Issues related to food, health, body image, disordered eating, and the impact of these on marginalized communities spark heated debate among ED treatment clinicians and researchers. Many of us have personal recovery experience and care deeply about these issues. We've experienced the harm caused by dominant narratives firsthand and want to make a change. EDeology is a space for difficult conversations among professionals—not to debate the facts, but to share the personal and professional experiences that shape each of our narratives. Specifically, we’ll have two types of conversations: Personal story. Share your experience of recovery and/or working with the ED population and the conclusions it has led you to. What messages are you passionate about sharing? Why are these meaningful to you and how do they influence your approach with clients? Dialogue. Converse with another person holding different viewpoints on a mutually meaningful topic. Answer the above questions while holding space for another person to do the same. The goal is not to debate objective truth but to allow both stories to coexist harmoniously. This podcast aims to represent the political and ideological spectrum without tone or language policing.  My hope is that if, as professionals, we can hold each other’s stories with honesty, empathy, and compassion, we’ll be better able to do so for our clients.
