In today's expanded lecture, we covered the essentials of Intellectual Property, with a specific focus on patents. We began by understanding the broader context of IP rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. We then delved into the specifics of patents, discussing their types, requirements for patentability, and the patent application process. We also explored patent rights and infringement, recent developments in patent law, and analyzed significant cases like Diamond v. Chakrabarty and Apple vs. Samsung to understand the practical implications of patent law. We discussed the challenges faced by the patent system, such as patent trolls, patent thickets, and ethical considerations in biotechnology. We also examined international perspectives on patent law, including differences between jurisdictions and the challenges faced by developing countries. These foundational concepts in intellectual property and patent law are critical for understanding how legal frameworks can encourage innovation while balancing public interest and access.
